TEAMS365 #2150 – The Last Mile of the Year

11/19/2019

Picture
We’re about six weeks away from the end of the year, a time which I like to frame as the LAST MILE of the year. It’s at this point where we start getting really clear on what needs to get done, what needs to get carried forward and what needs to get delegated.

Today’s post is an encouragement to think about what you want to accomplish in the last six weeks of the month.  As we consider the last mile there may be many areas we want to consider including:

Projects:
  • What are the projects which still need attention?
  • What are the projects which need more resources to wrap up?
  • What has moved out of scope and needs to be readjusted?

One-on-one time with your team:
  • When was the last time you held 1-1's with your team?
  • What are conversations which need to happen before year end?

Team Events:
  • What team events need to happen before year end?
  • What supports do they need individually? Collectively?

Planning and Performance Events:
  • Have you already prepared your 2020 plans – at the organizational, team and individual levels?
  • When did you last hold a performance conversation with each team member? Ask for feedback yourself?

Stakeholder Events:
  • What stakeholders do you want to reach out to?
  • What conversations and/or collaborations are important to have?
  • What updates are important to provide?
  • Who do you want to set meetings up with before year end, or at the start of the year?

Communication and Reporting
  • What reports need to be completed?
  • What information needs to be shred with others?
  • What reports need an update?
  • What tasks have you been putting off? What needs an update?

Other Items:
  • What other items need to be wrapped up?
  • What do you need to put in hold or closed off on?
  • What are you going to do to capture lessons learned and lessons to carry forward?

The last couple of weeks of the year can feel like a whirlwind, and sometimes the important tasks get set aside and missed, including time set aside for the team. In one of my newsletters this month I included 8 different ways to wrap the year up with groups and teams – link to newsletter here.

What daily steps do you want to take going forward to get important items focused on?

Best wishes,
Jennifer

Picture
It’s Saturday which means that it’s time for another Weekly Journaling Prompt. Each week I share a different question which I hope will provoke and prompt some new ideas for you.

This week’s question is “My favorite time of day is…”

Take a few minutes today to capture your thoughts around your favorite time of day.

Why is it your favorite time of day?

What do you do?

What are the special events of that time of the day?

Capture some photos, sounds or images of your favorite time of day to make a collage as a reminder.

Best,
Jennifer

This week’s writing prompt gets you to reflect on, and write about, what you want to say a resounding “HECK, YES!” to?

Perhaps you are thinking about an upcoming decision you need to make. If you are looking to weigh the pros, and cons, how about overlaying the question – What can you say a "HECK YES!" to?

Enjoy your reflection!

#TEAMS365 #2083 – Flashback Friday – Habits

9/13/2019

Picture
This week’s Flashback Friday gets you to think about your habits. I thought I’d reach back to an earlier post from the 2018 Kickoff where I included several questions to consider. Given our recent focus on back to work, I thought It would be useful to revisit these again.

Here’s what I wrote in Teams365 #1466:

Today we turn our attention to creating habits and practices that will support you in what you want to achieve this year. Habits and practices are things we do automatically, sometimes unconsciously, because they have come so ingrained. There are many schools of thought that create a link between habits and success. That habits lead to success.

Take a look back at your first four days of prompts for the 2018 Kickstart, and with this in mind:
1. What will help you be successful this year?
2. What are the consistent behaviors and actions you want to or need to undertake to move you towards your goals?
3. What could amplify or magnify those goals?
4. What's missing that could make a difference?
5. What small shifts would make a new ripple?
6. What does consistency mean for you around habits?
7. What could get in the way?
8. What is going to remind you about your commitment to your goals?
9. What do you notice about how your mindset is influencing your habits?
10. What is becoming automatic for you OR what needs to become automatic for you in your successful pursuit towards your goal?

I hope that you are continuing to enjoy the 2018 Kickstart prompts.

Enjoy the focus!

Today’s Weekly Journaling Prompt gets you to think about the question – “The comfort zone I have stretched this year is….”

Learning, change and growth usually happen within or just outside the comfort zone. What are the things you have done to grow? Change? Stretch? What benefit have they had?

Enjoy your journaling this weekend and be sure to catch up on past posts.

If you want another way to look at these, check out the Quarterly Volumes of the Weekly Journaling Prompts available in a quarterly format at our store.

All the best,

#TEAMS365 #2016 Effective Virtual Conversations Tip 101

7/8/2019

Picture
This week’s Effective Virtual Conversations tip asks you to consider the area of Goal Setting. Providing space for people to set and share their goals in the virtual space can be an important connector in the virtual space.

If group members are meeting over an extended time, it may be useful to have people share their progress using a:
  • One Page Plan
  • A Dashboard

Tracking goals can be a motivating process. To avoid it becoming a “check box activity” or goal fatigue, provide opportunities for people to connect into what’s important about the goal, or the overarching WHY.

In exploring the why you might ask questions like “What’s possible?”, “Three years from now, where do you want to be?”

Questions to consider:
  • What are the key goals you are focusing on this month?
  • How is progress towards these goals coming?
  • What is the WHY behind the goal? What would you like to make sure you experience?
  •  What do you want to do to keep your goals visible?

Best wishes,
Jennifer

This week’s Weekly Journaling prompt gets you to explore the question “One thing I want to make sure I complete by the end of the year is….”

This is a great opportunity to pull out your goals for the year and to see where you are with the goals you have set out.

What is complete?

What is still in process?

What is the one thing you DEFINITELY want to make sure does get complete?

Enjoy your reflections this weekend, and if you haven’t done so, take a look at the Quarterly Reflection Prompts I shared back in March. It’s just the start of Q3 and some of these questions may be a great addition to your reflection.

Enjoy!

#TEAMS365 #2007: Mid-Year Checkpoint

6/29/2019

Picture
As we step into the middle of the year, it can be a great time to create a pause to undertake a quick mid-year checkpoint. Most Saturdays I share a Weekly Journaling Prompt, but this week you might want to explore these mid-year questions:
  • My theme this year is….
  •  What have your successes been ?
  • Where has your focus been?
  • Who have you been working with?
  • What’ s been happening?
  • What have you taken a stand for?
  • What have you become known for?
  • What have been the major milestones?
  • What goals have you achieved?
  • What’s your focus for the rest of the year?

I shared these questions mid-month with the professionals who attend the Learning Lab and Design Studio, and they loved the reflection space.

Enjoy your time reflecting as well!

#TEAMS365 #2003: Key Trends – Navigating Disruption

6/25/2019

Picture
Disruption is part of the landscape of many industries and workplaces today. Whether things are changing dramatically due to technology or  geopolitical impacts, change is pervasive for many.

While we can’t change the pace of change, we can adjust our approaches to it.

What do we do to continue to be effective and positive in times of change?

Three practical things we can do are:

Cultivate curiosity – While many leaders would assert “easier said than done”, cultivating curiosity is important for today’s business landscape. Cultivating curiosity can be an important skill to develop in team members AND embed in the culture of an organization.

For more on cultivating curiosity, check out this earlier Teams365 blog post I wrote on Cultivating Curiosity Teams365 #1955 and what the research says Teams365 1961 – Encouraging Curiosity.

Be clear on the big picture goals – Adopting a 30,000 foot view on work, life and context can also be a valuable strategy for buffeting against the shocks of change. While the meta-view (big picture view) is not one that everyone adopts easily, seeing the big picture helps with the micro-shocks we can feel on a regular basis when things change. This is why it’s really important to continue communicating and meeting during times of change. Helping share the big picture so people don’t find themselves in the “Weeds”, cut off from what’s happening in the bigger picture is critical.

Become comfortable with knowing when things are “good enough” to let go, and that learning may always be needed. The embracement of “growth mindset” on the part of organizations in support of their staff, it encouraging. When we come from what Carol Dweck has coined “growth mindset” it gives permission for experimentation, learning, and not quite being ready “yet”.

Disruption may mean that reverse mentoring (junior to more senior professionals) is just as important as traditional mentoring (senior to more junior professionals). It also provides us with an opportunity to pause and see how we are adjusting to change. Are we as “good at change” as we thought we were?

A reminder that last month I focused on Teamwork in Uncertainty (link to tag of Teamwork in Uncertainty).

Teams365 #1955- Teamwork in Uncertainty: Cultivating Curiosity. View it here.

Teams365 #1954 – Managing Uncertainty – Building Trust and Connection on Your Team Virtually. All workplaces can benefit from this topic – it is one of the #1 questions we receive here at Potentials Realized. Check out the post here.
