This week’s Team Building Tip gets us to explore habits. What are the habits you have been developing this year? What is helping you excel or thrive? Survive?

Habits are things that we do on a regular basis so that they become automatic.

For those in a remote working environment, you may want to experiment with these habits:
  • Working with periods of no notifications, or on airplane mode.
  • Setting a timer to get into the rhythm of working on a “heavy” or creative project - Sometimes it can take 10-15 minutes of getting going with a project.
  • Getting up to walk around every 50 minutes – Too much time sitting has an impact on everyone. What can you do to create more movement in your day? Take a look back to my July 2020 post on the importance of walking in nature.
  • Wrapping up meetings at 10 to the hour, to give people an opportunity to get moving with their work.
  • What else are habits which are going to help you as a team, or as a remote professional?

This week’s Team Building Tip gets you to think about “What’s an energy booster?” From zoom fatigue to decision fatigue, 2020 is unlikely to go down as a year of too much energy.
​
This week have some discussion as to what can be an energy booster for you as a team. Consider the following:
  • Incorporate a mindfulness technique – breathwork, yoga or even a simple stretch!
  • Bring in a guest speaker
  • Co-work together – i.e. earmark a 2 hour block where you work live and real-time with others while working on different tasks. You might check in at the top of each hour.
  • Do a fun task together – ie Do a Cook Off and cook a meal together
  • Play a round of bingo
  • Attend an escape room virtually

We’re returning back to pitfalls this week, building onto what I discussed last week, given that many are concerned with what pitfalls can look like.

This week, sound the alarm! It’s all about taking a moment as a team to STOP. PAUSE. And consider what pitfalls you are experiencing. What are the pitfalls which are present in your work right now?

Consider pitfalls for the team like:
  • Lack of communication
  • Meetings for the sake of meetings
  • Not involving the right people in decision making
  • Assumptions which go unsurfaced

What are the pitfalls the team is facing right now?

Likewise, what are the pitfalls present for the organization?
Consider pitfalls like:
  • No planning process in place
  • Reactivity
  • A strategic plan that hasn’t been updated since the pandemic

What are the pitfalls for the organization?

Finally, what about pitfalls due to technology?

Consider:
  • People not feeling connected to others and the work they do, or the organization
  • People not feeling like they have a voice or an input channel
  • People not feeling heard

​Each of these pitfalls has a significant business cost which can get magnified quickly in the remote space. What’s important to note about these pitfalls and what do you want to do about it?

This week’s Team Building Tip gets you to consider the PITFALLS you may be facing – as a team or organization.

One of my current writing projects is the Daily Remote Guide. Recently we explored some of the pitfalls to remote work including:
  • Different types of social Interaction than what we experienced in the in-person space - While we can’t meet at the water cooler, what is the virtual watercooler you have access to?
  • Visibility - Several recent studies have found that many younger professionals are concerned about their visibility during this session. Out of Sight Does Not Mean Out of Mind. If you are concerned that no one knows what you do, consider how you can create more opportunities for sharing across the team?
  • Many items get magnified - From glitches to where there are gaps, consider how things get magnified in the remote space.
  • Collaboration - As I like to say, “no person is an island”. What’s going to help you collaborate across distance and space?
  • Myths - Many of the myths around remote work have been busted in recent months. From previous myths such as “if people work from home they will just sit around in pajamas” to “we really can’t connect virtually”. What are the myths which exist in your organization or industry? What’s going to help to dispel them?
