#teams365 #3099 Mid-Year Review

6/30/2022

Picture
It’s the middle of the year and time to take stock of where we are at.  I hope that you will take 15 minutes today or later this week to do a quick mid-year review. Consider these questions:
What have you achieved so far this year?

What annual goals have been completed?

What goals are still in process?

What is important to prioritize going forward?

What else?

As we turn to the months of June and July, consider these questions:
1. As you reflect on June, what have been your successes and accomplishments?
2  What are you most proud of?
3. What successes this month do you want to duplicate? What has been some of your key learnings?
4. What key relationships have helped you so far this year? Which ones need more attention?
5. What has helped your successes? What has hindered?
6. What does your team need to be acknowledged for?

As you look to July, consider these questions:
1. What are your key priorities for July?
2. What are the key goals?
3.  What are the major priorities?
4. What will you need to place attention on?
5. What changes do you want to make in February?
6. What resources do you want to tap into?

What other questions would be useful for you to consider today?

#teams365 #3098 Prioritization

6/29/2022

Picture
As we step into the heart of summer, what are your priorities? It’s easy for things to get off-kilter in the summer months (for those in the Northern Hemisphere). What’s important for you to focus on right now? With this in mind, I thought it would be useful to reach back to the Remote Pathways Weekly Series with Week 33’s focus on Prioritization - 52 WEEKS: WEEK 33 - Prioritization #priorities - REMOTE PATHWAYS
Focus Question: What do you want to focus on today?

Description
There are many competing priorities in a business. What are the things you want to focus on today? This week?

As solopreneurs, it’s unlikely that our To-Do list will ever be complete. We can overwork ourselves to the point of burn out.

As virtual and remote professionals the issue of prioritization takes on immense significance given that we are likely to be part of multiple teams, working across different time zones, with each team and leader having different priorities. Having to work more autonomously, and independently, we also can benefit from prioritizing what’s important from the “bigger picture” of what’s on our desk at any given moment of time.

In Coaching Business Builder and PlanDoTrack, I share four different prioritization tools which will help you identify what is going to give you more focus:
1. The Strategic Issues Mapping
2. The SWOT
3. Covey’s Urgent/Important Matrix
4. Urgency/Importance Matrix
Picture
Picture
Activity
It can be useful to adjust our lists and tasks laying them out in different ways get different perspectives. Here are several ways to slice up your current list:
Make a list of the most important tasks you have on your plate right now. Assign them a weighting in terms of a 1-10.
Then look at the original list again and distribute them according to whether it’s something you can DO, DELEGATE, DEFER or DUMP. Now renumber them again. Assign those that can be deferred to a new list or schedule them in. Dump items need to get dumped. Delegate those onwards that you can. What do you notice now?

If you are doing some longer-term planning, refer to the SWOT and/or Strategic Issues Mapping which you’ll find in PlanDoTrack If you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck or working on immediate priorities consider using the other prioritization tools.

#teams365 #3097 Collaboration In Focus – Revisiting Week 40

6/28/2022

Picture
This week we’re reaching back to a blog series I did over at the Remote Pathways blog back in 2020. Collaboration was the week 40 topic, and is as relevant today (and probably more so) than it was then. As you read though this, what do you notice?
Focus Question: Where can 1 + 1 = more than 2?

Description
Virtual collaboration is an art form, and a requirement of exceptional work in the remote space. “No person is an island”. It is critical that we spend time focusing on what is important for those we work with.

Collaboration can be more complex in the remote space as we don’t always see the context our colleagues are operating within. With this in mind, it can be even more important to be intentional in designing our relationships This is a topic I explore in Chapter 12 of Effective Virtual Conversations.

In Effective Virtual Conversations, I also explore some of the core skills at the heart of great collaboration. Take a minute and think about how these skills are underpinning great collaboration for you.

At the heart of great collaboration is clarity around:
Why are we collaborating? Collaboration is not always the best strategy.

What’s our common stake? What are all parties committed to?

What do we each bring to the table?

Activity
#1 – Where are you collaborating?
Map out the different collaboration partners you currently have? What makes them work?

#2 – Skills for Collaboration:
What skills do you lean into? What could use attention?  Some of the more common skills needed for collaboration, which I outline in Chapter 12 of Effective Virtual Conversations, is listed below.

Complete the chart below:

For more on this topic check out: Chapter 12 – Effective Virtual Conversations and multiple sections in PlanDoTrack and Coaching Business Builder.

#teams365 #3096  Navigating Disruptions – Remote Pathways Blog

6/27/2022

Picture
I thought it would be interesting to reach back to some of the Remote Pathways weekly blog series I did a few years ago. Whether you are working all remote, hybrid or you are back into the office, the ideas are as relevant today as they were a few years ago. I thought I would reach back to some of my favorite weekly sessions, starting with Week 41 – Navigating Disruptions. Check out the original post, and download here -   52 Weeks: Week 41 - Navigating Disruptions #remotework - REMOTE PATHWAYS
“2020 is likely to be remembered in the history books as the year of disruption. While the year may have started out with a strong focus on what would be possible in the new decade, the global pandemic influenced professionals and businesses alike. As it relates to the global workforce, approximately 3 Billion professionals were working from home at one stage of the pandemic.

This global experience of the reaction to a massive disruption that most in our generation have not experienced, can lay clues for how we approach change, disruption and innovation.

What were your key learnings around this?

In navigating disruption and change some of the lessons learned from this recent pandemic has been:

  • Focusing on what’s important at the core of your business
  • Considering how and what it can look like in a “new normal”
  • Being clear on your business values and philosophies which will remain the same even if the context or processes change.
  • Having a strong business vision – Keeping an eye on your vision can help to ground you when the waters around you are turbulent. As I have been sharing this year -when we move our eyes to the horizon (which is where our vision resides), it is different than if we have our eyes on the foreground
  • Considering whether you are a disruptor yourself as a business or responding to disruption

This Fast Company article, Navigating Disruption: A Roadmap for Leaders, by Grant Thornton, highlights seven areas you will want to explore:
#1 - Watch for early indicators
#2 - Adopt a broad view
#3 - Take inventory
#4 - Build bridges not silos
#5 - Become more diverse
#6 - Be curious
#7 - Know Thyself

Activity
Identify the disruptions you are facing in your work right now. What are you doing around the seven areas Thornton highlights?

Also consider these questions:

  • What’s helping you navigate?
  • What’s getting in the way?
  • Who else (mentors, peers) can support you in exploring alternative strategies?

What’s going to support you in being more fluid with change?

#teams365 #3093 Flashback Friday – Teamwork in Uncertainty – Comfort in the Unknown

6/24/2022

While many elements are more stable than they were a year ago, teamwork in itself can be an ongoing adventure. I thought it would be valuable to take a look at #TEAMS365 #1969 – Teamwork in Uncertainty – Comfort With The Unknown - POTENTIALS REALIZED
Today’s blog post gets us thinking about values. Values serve as anchors or a compass, leading the way or anchoring us when we need to make decisions, prioritize and focus.

In an uncertain context, being clear about our behaviors as a team is critical. As we go to explore our values, we may first want to consider what our values are individually. To do this, we might explore the following questions:

  • What is important to me?
  • What are the things I will take a stand for?
  • What’s absolutely essential to have in my work/life?
  • What makes me angry/happy/at ease?

All of these questions will usually point to a value which is important.

Underneath the words of a value are the behaviors. What do the values look like in action? If I were to take my phone into the workplace and record behaviors, what would I see?

As a team, and especially a remote team, having a focus on values can help during periods of uncertainty. Even though the context may change, hopefully our values are not changing in the arena.

As a team, this week consider what your top 3 operating values are this year. What are you committed to, no matter what? Behaviorally, what do these values look like in action?

Best,
Jennifer

#teams365 #3092 Team Building Tip: Something you should know about my work is…

6/23/2022

It is Thursday and time for another team building tip - #11 in the series. This week take some time to discuss the question "Something you should know about my work is....".

Many teams are not aware of what each other does. Taking time to strengthen knowledge and information in these areas whelps to clarify roles, see overlap and share information about priorities.

What other questions would be useful to have some discussion around?

Take a look at other Getting to Know our Team questions here.

#teams365 #3091 Remote Pathways, Routines and Rhythms

6/22/2022

Picture
As part of our shift into the summer season I thought it would be interesting to take a look back at some of the many posts I’ve written in this 3100 adventure! Here’s a post from last year which will be of interest to those who are considering their hybrid work rhythms and practices.  This post was originally published as: Routine Check – Remote Working Rhythms - PlanDoTrack
My Remote Pathways podcast co-host (link to RemotePathways.com/podcast) has a great phrase – Remote working rhythms – which I had to borrow for this week’s blog post. This week we pause to check in around your routines with remote work. What are the routines you have established in your work?
Questions to consider:

  • Do you start work every day at a consistent time?
  • End work at a consistent time?
  • Get out (outside or out of the office) to fit some workouts or exercises?
  • What do you do to expand your remote work rhythms?
  • Possible remote working routines you could undertake:
  • Having a fixed start and end time
  • Participating in a regular co-working session with other professionals (similar to what I did with the 21 for 21 Virtual Co-working Sprints. Returning again in Q2.
  • Tackling certain tasks at a specific time or day
  • Earmarking a specific window for a certain task
Routines are important as they start to build out habits. As I have shared in past posts, habits can become automatic in terms of acting like a switch to get things done.
What are the routines or habits you want to undertake?

Warm regards,

Jennifer

#teams365 #3090 Start of Summer (or Winter) Planning

6/21/2022

Picture
It’s the summer solstice for us here in Canada and I always like to earmark this day as an opportunity to do take a pause and do some planning, as well as aspiration setting. Take a look at what I shared a few years ago on this same day:
Today marks the official start of summer.  With a new season kicking into gear, it's a great time to take a pause to think about your programming for the next quarter, as well as consider some special project work.

Here are some questions you may want to think about as you step into summer:

1. The greatest opportunity facing me right now is....
2. The greatest opportunity facing the team right now is...
3. By the end of summer I/we will have accomplished....
4. The one habit I want to cultivate is...
5. The one task/thing I need to say no to it...
6. Consistent action around _______ (fill in the blank) will lead to ______ this summer.
7. Lessons learned i can apply going forward are.....

What projects are you going to take on board this summer? Some possible project ideas for team leaders could include:

  • Holding more regular one-on-ones with team members
  • Working on that special project that you have flagged, but haven't taken action on
  • Reviewing roles with the team to see what is working, and what needs a tweak
  • Considering what reporting mechanisms are going to support better goal setting - for example - a one page plan
  • Creating a guide/playbook in your area of expertise (ie. on-boarding, project management, meeting management)
Take a few minutes to make a list of the different special projects you might consider focusing on this summer.
