TEAMS65 #2392 – Weekly Journaling Prompt 109

7/18/2020

Picture
Welcome back to another weekly journaling prompt. This week’s prompt is “I’m in the FLOW when….”

As I share in PlanDoTrack, my Workbook Planner for Remote and Virtual Professionals, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi writes, ”The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relating times…The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” (from his book FLOW, 1990, page 3)

What are the moments when you find yourself in flow? It’s often characterized by us using our strengths just at the edge of our comfort zone, around topics we find interesting and important.

What helps you get into flow?

What’s possible when you move into that state?

Enjoy the reflections!

TEAMS365 #2178 - Digital Transformation

12/17/2019

Picture
As an author and consultant, I often work with organizations and teams around the topic of digital transformation. As someone who has usually worked as an early adopter with technology, sometimes out of geographic necessity, digital transformation is an extension of the work I’ve been doing for several decades now.

You can hear more about the various pathways that bring us into remote and digital work at the new podcast I am hosting with colleague Michelle Mullins. Together we are exploring the people, pathways and processes that make up the remote workspace.

Digital transformation has been one part of this equation. From large banks, to healthcare, to education, the way we are connecting, conversing and doing our work is essential.

Many rural areas now have access to medical advisors that would not have been possible years ago. I remember vividly being part of some epiphany moments and paradigm shifters in 1998 (yes, that’s 1998) with a community deep in the interior of South America. A funding grant from the Canadian International Development Agency helped to fund solar panels, a satellite connection and special laptops to link that community with educational materials. When I arrived at the community to meet with my team who had been based there doing related work in primary health and infrastructure rehab, I was struck (as was often the case) with the very limited resources available for students. One notebook each, a small pencil and bare bookshelves. This pilot project was a bit of a game changer for that community, opening up the doorways to education for those children.

While not every project like this is a success, they radically change the paradigm of how we work, what’s available and then what’s possible.

This is also what’s happening in the era of digital transformation.

While we may not be comfortable in letting go of “how we’ve always done things” it’s important that we also look at the questions of:
  • What can we do now?
  • What’s now possible?
  • What new connections are there?

VUCA, digital transformation, and AI (all 3 separate things) are showing up in some workplaces at the same time. IT can be overwhelming for some and spark creativity for others.

Providing a space for people to connect and share their insights in a way where they can be heard.

As a team, over time, be sure to build in time to explore additional questions around:
  • What changes do we need?
  • What can be evolved? Repurposed?
  • What new things do we need to create?
  • What do we need to stop doing?
  • What conversations are important for you to have as a team? What space and time do you need to earmark so these conversations are taking place?

Best wishes,
Jennifer

TEAMS365 #2128 – Effective Virtual Conversations Tip 117

10/28/2019

Picture
This week’s Effective Virtual Conversations Tip takes us further into the landscape of the art of Design in Virtual and Remote Work (meetings, conversations, training etc). This week I wanted to zoom into the landscape of graphics which become such a powerful window and door opener for your conversations.

While I am not an expert with graphical design, and I rely on the trusted services of others to help me round out in this area, I am very cognizant in my own virtual presentations how much my own preferences and styles have changed in recent years.

For many years I used to teach a Presentation Skills training program and one of the things that always stuck with me was the importance t of not cramming too much content onto a slide. We used to call it the Six by Six rule. This rule stated that a slide really shouldn’t have any more than six words across and six lines of text. Today, the Six by Six rule leads to very bulky slides, and we’ve moved in many industries to a focus on minimalism.

Photography has become even more common place and we can create much more of our own imagery through our phones and cameras. If you do need to use someone else’s photos, be aware of licensing use and be sure to purchase commercial rights if you are a business. Unsplash has a great portal of stock photography as do other places.

For each of us, our market may be different and what is visually appealing to one group may not be attractive to another.

With this in mind, here are some questions to consider as you go about designing your slides for your next presentation:
  • What is the message you want to communicate through your images?
  • What are the main colors which represent your brand (or your messaging)?
  • What are your clients inspired, touched, or moved by?
  • What is the emotional message you want to communicate?
  • What images would communicate these messages?
  • What icons describe the story you want to communicate?
  • What else is important to check out around color?

For more on color use check out:

Enjoy the focus on color this week,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2121 – Effective Virtual Conversations Tip 116: Designing Memorable Virtual Calls

10/21/2019

Picture
This week’s Weekly Effective Virtual Conversations Tip takes us into the landscape of designing a memorable virtual experience. In my book, Effective Virtual Conversations, I share the PEBBLLES ETC model of virtual program design, in order to create a more memorable virtual learning experience.

For more on this model, check out the EVC community call I hosted on the same topic.

To paraphrase Suzuki - We remember things that are novel, memorable and attention grabbing. This is particularly important when we are leading a virtual call, given that it is likely that people will be moving quickly from topic to topic, and virtual meeting to virtual meeting.

When creating memorable programs for the virtual space it can be really useful to explore the following strategies to create more memorability:
  • Stories – you own or harnessing the stories of the group you are working with. This is a quick way to help people tap into the WIIFM principle – What’s In It For Me? - quickly in a virtual call.
  • Video
  • Cartoon
  • Poll about the topic
  • Breakouts where people get to connect and share their personal stories around the topic

Consider 3-5 things you might incorporate to tap into people’s emotion, or capture their attention for your next call.

Curious about what PEBBLLES stands for? Check out the launch call I held back in the summer of 2017 for the kickoff of Effective Virtual Conversations. You can view it here along with some of my other virtual book club calls.

I’ll be doing a number of weekly focus areas around design with EVC Monday Tips, so do stay tuned to learn more about what design elements are included in PEBBLLES ETC.

Have a great week,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2091 – Weekly Journaling Prompt 68

Picture
It is Saturday which means that it is time for another weekly journaling prompt. If you are new to this, check out the past posts I have shared. I hope that you will build in 10-15 minutes this weekend to grab your journal and take some notes.

This week’s prompt gets you to think about, and journal on the question, “My favorite place is…”.
  • Where do you love to be?
  • What’s so special about it?
  • What does it provide for you?
  • What’s so special about this place?
  • What is possible for you in this place?
  • When you are not there, what do you have to remind yourself of?
  • What can you do to spend more time there in the future?
  • What could you incorporate more of from this place, into your regular everyday experience?

Enjoy your reflections,
Jennifer

This week’s writing prompt gets you to reflect on, and write about, what you want to say a resounding “HECK, YES!” to?

Perhaps you are thinking about an upcoming decision you need to make. If you are looking to weigh the pros, and cons, how about overlaying the question – What can you say a "HECK YES!" to?

Enjoy your reflection!

#TEAMS365 #2077 – Weekly Journaling Prompt 66

It’s Saturday which means that it’s time for another weekly journaling prompt. This week’s prompt gets you to consider and reflect on the question “Why Not”?
Perhaps you are thinking about whether you invest time and resources into something. If you are only asking WHY, consider asking WHY NOT?

As you step into your fall routine, what would be the benefit of creating a quick 10-15-minute window to reflect on and capture some ideas in a journal. Even if this is the first week you do it, journaling can provide a number of benefits including:
  • A space to stop and pause and note what’s happening in your life or work.
  • An opportunity to explore issues of importance from different perspectives.
  • The chance to see how items are connected.
  • The pause to develop new insights.

I’ve bundled a set of the Weekly Journaling Prompts together in convenient quarterly downloadable notebooks. Take a look at them in our Potentials Realized store:
  • You’ll find Volume 1 (Weeks 1 – 12) here
  • You’ll find Volume 2 (Weeks 13 – 24) here

Wishing you the best,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2061 - Team Building Tip 250

8/22/2019

Picture
This week’s Weekly Team Building Tip brings us to the question of “What could use more percolation time?”

Like coffee, creative, new and innovative ideas sometimes need more time to percolate and simmer before they are ready, or complete.

As you consider your work right now ask yourself:
  • What could benefit from you stepping away for a short while?
  • What needs more time to simmer?
  • What needs more time before it is ready?
  • What might be pre-mature in your thinking or actions right now?

Consider what is going to benefit from a little more time BEFORE it’s ready!

It might be a creative project, a final report, or even a new idea you want to float by your boss.

Enjoy the reflection and space created by a bit more percolation!
Best wishes,
Jennifer

  6. What habits do you want to focus on?
  7. What relationships do you want to pay attention to?
