Teams365 #212: Developing Your Team Through Mentoring, Coaching and Leadership

7/31/2014

In terms of the development of members of your team, mentors, coaches and leaders all play important roles in building capacity of the team, individually and collectively. You can view past posts about mentoring here and coaching here.

Mentoring is often an underutilized method of support in organizations today. Mentors provide the value of being able to provide
tremendous insight into the culture of an organization, how to "practically" get things done, and also into networks and technical issues important for different roles. Along with my colleague, Susan Combs, we continue to hear from organizations that are interesting in adding mentoring, that they don't know where to start to support their mentors and proteges/mentees. This summer we luanched the Mentor RoadMap(TM) series of workbooks for mentors and proteges. Organizations who have gone through the initial beta tests have found the resources to be invaluable! Interested in learning more? Contact us to set up a conversation about how mentoring could benefit your organization.

Coaching also can play a key role in the development of the team - as individuals and also as the team itself. Research by the International Coach Federation has found that coaching has a number of productivity benefits, as well as other related areas. The 2009 Global Coaching Client survey found that:

Increased productivity measures include:
Improved work performance (70%)
Improved business management (61%)
Improved time management (57%)
Improved team effectiveness (51%)

Improved positivity measures include:
Increased self confidence (80%)
Increased relationships (73%)
Improved communication skills (72%)
Improved work life balance (67%)

We've focused on coaching skills for leaders here at the blog this month, and sometimes it can be useful to bring in an internal or external coach to work with your team. Contact us to learn more about what this could look like with your team.

At the same time, teams excel because of great leaders. This is the emphasis here at the Teams365 blog. Helping you as leaders, and aspiring leaders, become better at what you do - through new skills, refined approaches, new insights and self-awareness. In a few weeks we will be launching one of our first Teams365 Team Leader Foundation programs on Time Management. The first of more than a dozen training modules for team leaders. New modules will be offered monthly and I hope that you will join us in the coming months with a focus on your own development.
Learning is online so you don't have to travel!

Teams#365 #211: Meeting Management Faux-pas

7/30/2014

Today's post covers five faux-pas or mistakes you can make in a virtual meeting:

1. Faux-pas #1: No agreements or baseline on how to meet. Many virtual facilitators are hesitant to create a structure and agreements around how to make the meeting most effective. Standard agreements like starting and ending the meeting on time, having an agenda, with timelines help to keep the meeting on track. Circulate these before by email so everyone is aware. Notice the impact of this in your next faciltiation.

2. Faux-pas #2 - No agenda. It's important to maximize the time you have together in virtual meetings. Create an agenda, with timelines and circulate these in advance of the call so the final agenda can be created and circulated. That way adjustments are made BEFORE the program.

3. Faux-pas #3 - Trying to update those who dial in late. It can be very time consuming to stop and try to update those who may be calling in late. A better practice is to let people know about what will happen if you are late. Provide all callers with a few summary points as you go.

4. Faux-pas #4. - a Loose Hand on Time. Virtual meetings can go awry when facilitators do not keep to time or ask the group where time should be spent. If facilitators are not comfortable managing the time, assign a time-keeper role to one of the other participants.

5. Faux-pas #5 - Not coming to decisions. Before moving onto new items in the agenda, make sure you have come to a decision, or have assigned responsibility with clear next steps to someone in the group. If not, you run the risk of circular meetings with no firm takeaways.

#Teams365 #210: TEAMS365 Cartoon #8 - Difficult Participants

7/29/2014

Our next cartoon in our Teams365 series, Cartoon#8, is for those who might facilitate meetings or workshops. When working with groups there are always a couple of personalities which show up. This week's cartoon shows some of the many personalities which may feel challenging for us as facilitators.

Take a look at the different types of people who might show up. Which ones would be the biggest challenge for you? What can you do to involve them?

I want to thank ravenfeller at Fiverr.com who designed this for us - he's really got great talent in bringing our ideas to life! Thank you!

As we move into the last few days of the month consider these questions for yourself as a leader. You will also want to share them with the team:

1. What's important to celebrate?
2. What have been your major achievements?
3. What do you need to wrap up?

#Teams365 #208:  Standing on the Shoulder of Giants

Collaboration, learning from others, and building onto foundations created by others, is key to success as a leader.

This weekend consider these questions:

What collaboration really benefits your work?

What learning from others has been most significant in your career?

Which foundations of others are you building onto? What do you want to acknowledge about this?

#Teams206:  Renewal

7/25/2014

Picture
A few months ago we did a series on time management for team leaders. It was one of the most widely read weeks of our blog. Many team leaders feel that they are in a constant juggling act, and sometimes in ongoing “fire-fighting” mode. In order to sustain peak performance, it is is important that we spend time renewing. As we move into the heart of the summer, what opportunities have you taken, or are you crating around renewal.

For the month of July and part of August I move my office two-and-a-half hours north of Toronto to the beautiful wilderness of Muskoka. With technological advances each summer of the last ten that I’ve done this, has been made easier in terms of keeping in touch with my clients. It’s still close enough to travel for team events, and many leaders are already connecting with me during the rest of the year through phone and Skype. This summer change of pace is critical for me, as well as for my work.

What does renewal mean for you?

#Teams365 #205: Start, Stop and Change

7/24/2014

A powerful series of questions to ask of your team in considering change are-

In moving forward, what do we need to:

START

STOP

CHANGE?

Ask these questions at an upcoming planning meeting to start validating what is working and also surface, and address, what’s not working so well. Notice the different perspectives which emerge.

Fall is a wonderful time for change, as many of us still have the “School Year” mindset engrained. When might you use these series of questions with your team?

#TeamS365 #204: How Do New Ideas Take Root At Your organization?

7/23/2014

Picture
What’s the culture at your organization in terms of new ideas? Does it stifle new ideas or encourage them so they can take root, and perhaps pollinate others?

Fostering innovation is a critical business issue in many business industries today.

Questions to consider:

What do you do within your team to foster new ideas, innovative thinking, creativity?

What would be the impact if you did more of this?

What are the barriers to creativity and innovation?

What enable creativity and innovation at your workplace?

#Teams365 #203: Are You Afraid To Make a Mistake?

7/22/2014

Picture
Great leaders are comfortable in the space of not knowing. Great leaders are also comfortable in knowing that they make a mistake, or many mistakes, along the way. In today’s business environment of ongoing change, and where we need to rely on others, worrying about getting it always “RIGHT” sets us up for failure, or at very least, makes our work very stressful.

In my former work with the UN and in the international sector I had to become comfortable as a leader in knowing that there might never be a perfect solution. That most of the time I would have to make decisions when all the information, resources, skills and people where not available.

Analysis leads to paralysis, and if we are too concerned with making a mistake we miss opportunities. Of course, it’s important to act in our best intent and with our best ability, and it’s important to recognize that mistakes do happen. Recovery after a mistake, can be even more important than the mistake itself.

Questions to consider:

Where are you concerned you might drop the ball?

Who can support you in having your back?

Where do you need to become more comfortable with uncertainty?

Where might mistakes be inevitable? What can you do to mitigate or be comfortable with this? What recovery is absolutely essential?

What shift is needed for you around this area?

Have a great week,
Jennifer
