Also known as the catalyst, go-getter or provocateur, the fireworks coach is a bold coach who incites action. Like fireworks, they make a splash, are often seen as bold and are dynamic.

The icon on the catalyst is the firework.

The characteristics of the Go-getter are:
  • A doer
  • Getting Things Initiated
  • Getting Things Done
  • Boldness and sometimes pushing the envelope in service of getting things done.
 
The Catalyst values ACTION. Their gift is in acceleration of clients and splash! Their blindspot may include diving into the deeper layers of awareness with a client, slowing things down and being able to hold the space for a pause.
Other titles for the Catalyst, represented by Fireworks are : the Go-Getter or Provocateur.

Provocateur means to incite to action. As a coach this may include:
  • Leveraging the power of Inquiry – asking people questions so that they percolate on their responses
  • Helping a team focus
  • Leveraging the power of a challenge. Note that a coaching challenge
  • Supporting teams and groups thourhg sprint cycles. The value of a sprint is in helping a team collapse a working cycle. By compressing the time available for a task, teams often have to remove extraneous items and focus solely on one task, getting it done


On the flipside their Blindspots include:
  • Fireworks may be moving so fast that they steamroll or overpower others
  • While splashy they may lack staying power
  • The bursts of action may not be sustainable over time

To gain clarity they may activate more coaching processes with a team around

Coaching Priorities include a focus on
Goals
Action
Results
Implementation
Speed

They are very comfortable working with Goals, KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), as well as Metrics and Measurements. There is precision in the catalyst, ensuring that the necessary ingredients are there for the team to succeed.

As an inciter of action, the Fireworks Catalyst, may leverage coaching frameworks like Apps to help team members track progress, Trackers to help track action, dashboards to help teams view their progress.

The mantra of the Catalytic Firecracker Coach is What’s Your Next Step?
These coaches are energized by numbers, action and usually being in movement.

Their presence is often seen as dynamic, bold, big and powerful.

This week we are starting to explore the landscape of five different types of team and group coaching superpowers, based on my Team and Group Coaching Superpower Quiz. This will also be part of my next book coming out later in 2023.  If you haven’t taken the quiz yet, you will find it here.

The characteristics of the Ecosystem Connector are
  • Identifying and working with layers
  • Integration – helping others see connections
  • All about RELATIONSHIPS and CONNECTIONS
  • Finding the BRIDGES between difference
The focus of the Ecosystem/Web coach is on stakeholders and systems. As indicated earlier, teams do not operate in a vacuum. They operate in a complex web of layers and connections, internally, externally, current and future focused (what Peter Hawkins would call FUTURE-BACK).

The Web/Ecosystem values connection, and they bring the gift of activating different perspectives, voices and styles. Take a look at the web and notice how they involve, and connect different colors and voices to create a unique connection. 

Coaching Tools they may activate on a regular basis include:
  • Stakeholder Analysis – who is the team in relationship with, not only internally, but also externally
  • Stakeholder Mapping
  • PESTLE and SCAMPER
  • Envisioning the Future
  • Inside-Out and Future Back Thinking (Peter Hawkins)
 
The gift of the Ecosystem Connector™ Coach is in helping people view wider perspectives, the larger system and helping others find bridges between what may be seen as disparate. Of all the coaches, the Web Liaison/Liaison Web is often the one who is a convenor and brings the natural talent of connecting with others and putting them at ease.
They advocate for layers, bridges and systems.

Their blindspot is often around:
  • getting into action or focusing on RESULTS, given that a lot of time can be spent exploring the system, the webs and the relationships. 
  • Focusing on Results
  • The complexity they naturally see – many layers vs one layer
Their mantra is It’s all about relationships or “It’s all about the connection”
These coaches are often energized by possibilities, integration, holistic approaches, and seeing and working with things at multiple layers and perspectives. 

The Ecosystem Connector™ Coach is often seen as the one who takes a stand for emotions and  LOVE. 

The stalwart of relationships, coaching Models they may gravitate to include:
  • Head, Heart and Guts due to it’s integrative approach around coaching and the different layers – Head – what we think, Heart – what we feel, and Guts – what we sense. 
  • INSIDE-OUT and FUTURE BACK – Peter Hawkins
  • Perspectives work or Balance Coaching

These coaches are energized by perspectives, learning and exploring the system

Their presence is often described as an integrator, a connector, and inclusive.

Teams365 #3225: Boosting Team Coaching Co-Coaching by Understanding Your Unique Coaching Style – Part 2 – The Spiral Lighthouse™ Coach

An important element (but not the only success factor) for co-coaching is understanding your unique style, what you bring to the coaching conversation, your biases and what you may need to “dial up” and “dial down” when working with different coaching clients, as well as co-coaching partners.

This week, and next, we are going to take a deeper dive into my new Team and Group Coaching Superpower Quiz, launched a few weeks ago, it explores five different coaching styles which are common in the team and group coaching space. My hope is that this provides you with further insights as to your individual superpower. Note: as a coach you may have more than one superpower (a primary, secondary and even tertiary).

Today, we’re going to dive into the Spiral Lighthouse Coach:

The Spiral Lighthouse Coach (S-LTHS) is all about deepening the learning and creating a grounded harbour of trust, safety and connection.

The Triad of Trust, Connection and Safety takes our focus to the power of Community. The following graphic comes from Reconnecting Workspaces (refer to Chapter 5), and you can hear me talk about it more in my TEDx Talk.

Light the light at the top of the lighthouse they are all about getting the 360 degree view. They are very skilled at seeing for a long distance in many directions. They are also great at finding the connection between the ground and the metaview and in this respect are also well known for their work with layers and alignment.

They bring the gift of Seeing things in a 360 aligned way, recognizing that learning is ongoing and things/vantage points will change as the journey proceeds. This leads us to the metaphor of the spiral staircase.

Like the stairs on a spiral staircase S-LTHS Coaches are all about looking at things from different vantage points. From the Ground level up to the MetaView, they are all about unlayering topics with clients from different vantage points. In this respect, they are all about ongoing learning, reflection, action and pause.

Their blindspot can be in terms of things being seen at one layer, or in the fact that alignment may not always be possible. Take the experience of a virtual or remote team where alignment may be more challenging.

The overlap of the Spiral Lighthouse Coach (S-LTHS) is the sibling of the Ecosystem Connector (E-CONN). Both coaches focus on the WEB is similar but is nuanced in that the driver for the E-CONN is around connections, and the driver for the S-LTHS is alignment and layers, ensuring that one builds on to each other.

Teams365 #3224: Boosting Team Coaching Co-Coaching by Understanding Your Unique Coaching Style – Part 1

As we step into the month of November, we’re going to explore a topic I’ll be taking a deeper dive around later this month in the new Co-Coaching Essentials program – that of co-coaching (for coaches), co-leading and collaboration.
Just like teams, collaboration benefits from when different styles come together bringing different perspectives, strengths and creative differences. 
​
Think about a project you have led with another person. How were your skills different? Similar? 

One challenge when people’s skills are too similar is that massive blindspots can emerge. For example, if you are both strategic thinkers, you may both see the broad strokes of the project, but you may not notice the little details required. 
The same holds true in a coaching partnership, when two coaches come together to coach a team, large group or organization. When our strengths are too similar, it may be more challenging to hold the space for the expansive requirements needed by all the different coaches. 

In team coaching, supporting the range of conversations required is valuable. For example, if a team feels that they need to move more quickly a coach who has a strength in spurring on action can be available. AT the same time, slowing things down in order to speed things up, is also of value. This is where a coach who is a Catalytic Firecracker™ with a bias for action, can benefit from partnering with a Grounded Labyrinth™ coach who brings their strength around creating pause, BEFORE action.

Over the next couple of week’s, we’ll be exploring the five styles of team and group coaching superpowers in greater depth. This will help when going to co-coach.
