As we step into the end of the month, we’ve had a number of core focus areas here at the blog -Mid-Year Stock Taking. A reminder to check out these posts if you haven’t done so already:
  • Team Tune Up
  • Systems Check
  • Feedback and Performance Check
  • Coaching and Mentoring
  • Presentations
  • Navigating Disruption
  • Downshifting and Renewal

I’m going to save my anticipated post on Knowledge Management – Capturing Successes and Strategic Issues for this coming week.

Given that it’s the end of the month and the quarter, let’s take a look at some core questions:
  • What were my major achievements this month?
  • What do I want to celebrate?
  • As I consider my goals (and resolutions) I made at the start of the year, how am I doing with these on a scale of 1-10? Which ones are becoming new habits or something I can check off?
  • Which ones need to be let go of?
  • As a leader, what have I noticed about my team this month?
  • As a leader, what notes should I make about performance issues (if I haven't done it already!)
  • The thing that has helped me be most productive this month has been ______
  • The thing that has helped me be most successful this month has been ______
  • The thing that has helped me be happiest this month has been ________
  • The thing that has helped me be most healthy has been _______

Quarterly  Review Questions:
  • My major achievements this quarter have been _________
  • Key projects/tasks I started/completed/will continue…
  • Critical success factors were:
  • Key relationships I leaned into were:
  • What I need to carry forward to the next quarter is…
  • One thing I want to continue doing to ensure my success next quarter is…

Be sure to also take a look at the Quarterly Review Questions I posted at the end of March 2019. These can be used as Q2 reflections as well.

Looking ahead to July:
My priorities are:
My goals are:
I want to......
I'll be really happy at the end of summer when I.....

Enjoy your reflections and the wrap up of the month!

Best,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2007: Mid-Year Checkpoint

6/29/2019

Picture
As we step into the middle of the year, it can be a great time to create a pause to undertake a quick mid-year checkpoint. Most Saturdays I share a Weekly Journaling Prompt, but this week you might want to explore these mid-year questions:
  • My theme this year is….
  •  What have your successes been ?
  • Where has your focus been?
  • Who have you been working with?
  • What’ s been happening?
  • What have you taken a stand for?
  • What have you become known for?
  • What have been the major milestones?
  • What goals have you achieved?
  • What’s your focus for the rest of the year?

I shared these questions mid-month with the professionals who attend the Learning Lab and Design Studio, and they loved the reflection space.

Enjoy your time reflecting as well!
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2006 Flashback Friday: Tools for your Toolkit – Leaders and Business Owners

6/28/2019

Picture
This week as part of the Flashback Friday we are getting into the landscape of tools for business owners and leaders. Whether we lead a team, or run our own show, honing certain skills can help to accelerate our success.

I wanted to take us back to Teams365 #1540: Tools for Your Toolkit – Leaders and Business owners.

Here’s what I wrote:

Much of my work as a coach and consultant with leaders and teams revolves around support to leaders and business owners. One area we regularly return to is our toolbox or those resources we have at our disposal. Many of these we acquire from our own experiences, as well as the valuable networks of mentors and peers we belong to. This week we'll be focusing on several of the different tools which can be useful in our toolkit. Some of the tools you will want to make sure you have on hand are:

#1 - Tools for Virtual Conversations - Check out yesterday's Effective Virtual Conversations tip #36  (Teams365 #1539) where I mention five different tools you'll want to make sure you master for more engaged, memorable conversations in the virtual space.

#2 - Tools for Decision Making - Check out this audio post #Teams365 #495 where I cover two tools for decision making

#3 - Tools for Delegation - Delegation is one of the most challenging areas for team leaders and business owners. As our work evolves it can often feel difficult to pass projects off to others. Check out my past post #391 on The Dreaded D Word - Delegation, where I share with you a quick activity to undertake to identify some of the areas you could delegate

#4 - Problem Solving Tools - Check out this short audio posts on 3 tools for problem solving in Teams365 #488 here.

#5 - Planning Tools - Without a clear vision, and a plan to execute, our efforts may become unfocused. Drucker wrote "what doesn't get measured, doesn't get done". What are the planning tools you refer to regularly? Whether we are undertaking a SWOT, or a strategic Issues mapping activity, or building in regular pause points to take stock of where we are, planning is critical for success. Check out the multiple posts on planning here.

#6 - Conflict Resolution Tools - Conflict is inevitable in teams, especially given that most teams which excel are highly diverse. Learning to work across differences, and adjust our styles is part and parcel of collaboration and conflict resolution.  Check out Teams365 #1196 for my post on Navigating Conflict in Teams.

#7 - Collaboration Tools - Going hand in hand with conflict is collaboration. Having a toolkit of resources to help you incorporate different ideas and perspectives, unearth assumptions, and leverage the best of a team is critical for teams and businesses today. I've written multiple posts on collaboration in the past, from partnering to ingredients for collaboration

#8 - Coaching Tools - The final tool-set I would add is that of coaching tools. Coaching encompasses listening, questioning and helping others create their own solutions. In today's ever changing VUCA world, coaching is playing an even more important role. This is a focus of the bulk of my work with clients. What can you do to boost your peer coaching skills, or developing these skills in your team? Check out past posts on coaching here.

I hope that you will take a  few minutes today to take note of the tools you are already have in your toolkit, and those you want to develop this year. What are the skills which will help you take your business or your team to the next level?

Best wishes,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2005: Team Building Tip 242

6/27/2019

Picture

This week’s Team Building Tip is all about asking the question “What could you jettison so you move forward”?

Jettison may not be a term you are  familiar with, but it refers to tossing something overboard to lighten your load.

We are often in the habit of saying YES to so much that we become overburdened.  What is the one thing you need to let go of this season?

Success in business today doesn’t always mean doing more. Many times it means doing less. In approaching this week’s Team Building Tip, some other questions you will want to explore are:
  • What is the one thing which if you tossed, would lighten your load (metaphorically, of course)?
  • Is there a course of action you have been taking which needs to be completed? Wrapped up? Refocused?
Best wishes,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2004:  Downshifting and Renewal

6/26/2019

Picture
The final mid-year check in post for the month is all about downshifting and renewal. It can be hard to switch off during the summer months, and yet it is imperative. We need time to renew and recharge. Teams today can’t function 100% of the time at full force. We know from the field of high performance sport, that athletes need phases to renew after a big race. What are you doing to renew in the next few months?

For many businesses the next month or two involves a lot of time when people are offline for summer holidays. It may be an opportune time for downshifting and renewal.

In order to get the most out of your time off, consider these questions:
  • What do I need to do to wrap up before I go on holidays?
  • Who will be covering for me, when I am gone? How do I communicate this (internally/externally)? What do I need to make sure I have for them?
  • What do I do to ensure coverage so I can go offline during my time off?
As you focus on your time off ask yourself:
  • What is important to do during my time off?
  • Who do I want to connect with?
  • What, if anything, do I want to check off my summer project or bucket list?
  • What’s a non-negotiable around my holiday time?

Enjoy the reflection!

#TEAMS365 #2003: Key Trends – Navigating Disruption

6/25/2019

Picture
Disruption is part of the landscape of many industries and workplaces today. Whether things are changing dramatically due to technology or  geopolitical impacts, change is pervasive for many.

While we can’t change the pace of change, we can adjust our approaches to it.

What do we do to continue to be effective and positive in times of change?

Three practical things we can do are:

Cultivate curiosity – While many leaders would assert “easier said than done”, cultivating curiosity is important for today’s business landscape. Cultivating curiosity can be an important skill to develop in team members AND embed in the culture of an organization.

For more on cultivating curiosity, check out this earlier Teams365 blog post I wrote on Cultivating Curiosity Teams365 #1955 and what the research says Teams365 1961 – Encouraging Curiosity.

Be clear on the big picture goals – Adopting a 30,000 foot view on work, life and context can also be a valuable strategy for buffeting against the shocks of change. While the meta-view (big picture view) is not one that everyone adopts easily, seeing the big picture helps with the micro-shocks we can feel on a regular basis when things change. This is why it’s really important to continue communicating and meeting during times of change. Helping share the big picture so people don’t find themselves in the “Weeds”, cut off from what’s happening in the bigger picture is critical.

Become comfortable with knowing when things are “good enough” to let go, and that learning may always be needed. The embracement of “growth mindset” on the part of organizations in support of their staff, it encouraging. When we come from what Carol Dweck has coined “growth mindset” it gives permission for experimentation, learning, and not quite being ready “yet”.

Disruption may mean that reverse mentoring (junior to more senior professionals) is just as important as traditional mentoring (senior to more junior professionals). It also provides us with an opportunity to pause and see how we are adjusting to change. Are we as “good at change” as we thought we were?

A reminder that last month I focused on Teamwork in Uncertainty (link to tag of Teamwork in Uncertainty).

Teams365 #1955- Teamwork in Uncertainty: Cultivating Curiosity. View it here.

#Teams365 #2002 – Effective Virtual Conversations Tip #96

6/24/2019

Picture
One of the key principles of any good design is that this matches the needs of the people you are designing for. Keeping your ‘people” front and center in any virtual conversation is going to help you anchor the:
  • Purpose
  • Approach
  • Amount of engagement
  • Emphasis on interactivity (via breakouts, annotation and polls)
  • Amount of content

These elements can vary dramatically in a conversation.

What are the things you want to make sure you incorporate into your next conversation?

A reminder that you can check out the May 2019 Effective Virtual Conversations call on 6 Keys to Engagement for further illustration of some of the different ways we might make our call more interactive. You can view it HERE.

What do you know about your participants and what they want?

Enjoy your conversations!

#TEAMS365 #2001: Weekly Journaling Prompt #55

6/23/2019

From audio devices in our kitchens and cars, to streaming video replacing many TV programs, this week’s journaling prompt gets you to think about what your favorite book, show and /or song is right now. Why you ask?

When did you last stop and pause and think about what you are consuming? Books, podcasts, screen time?

It can be interesting for us to take a deeper look at what we are exploring in our reading and listening.

Enjoy the writing and if you haven’t had a chance to capture your summer goals yet, now might be a great time.

If you want some inspiration, check out the Quarterly Planning Prompt video I recorded a few months ago. You can apply the questions to any quarter. Grab a pen and view the Quarterly Planning Prompt video here. It runs for 30 minutes. If you want a shorter video – check out this 2.5 minute one I did last year.

Enjoy!

#TEAMS365 #2000 Celebrating 2,000 Posts!!!

6/22/2019

Picture
Today we reach another milestone here at the Teams365 blog. It’s the 2000th post! What began as an experiment for me on January 1st to see what it would be like to write every day around leadership and teamwork issues, has now become an important part of my regular writing practice. Like so much in business, we don’t know where we are going to go until we do it.

There’s been a lot that’s occurred since I kicked off the Teams365 blog on January 1st 2014 including some of these achievements:
  • The evolution of the entire Teams365 series of learning programming for leaders, teams, and also virtual and remote workers. While these were a twinkle in my eye prior to the start of the blog, these are now well evolved sets of programs – some which are on-demand courses like the Teams365 Teamwork Foundations.
  • Multiple corporate engagements around group coaching training and coaching skills training for leaders, including one that was awarded the Prism Award for Excellence in Coaching (2016), and an Award of Excellence – Curriculum Design (2017).
  • The publication of three more books – Effective Virtual Conversations (2017), Coaching Business Builder (2018), and  PlanDoTrack (2019).
  • Moving from less than 100 page views a week to last week’s 2,069 unique visitors, and 14,928 page views.

It’s been interesting establishing a practice of writing with a regular focus. Here are some of the series you will want to check out if you haven’t seen them already:
  • The Saturday Weekly Journaling Prompt series. For those that enjoy a reflective pause, you will want to check out the Saturday posts which started about a year ago, focused on a weekly prompt. Grab a pen and journal and get started! If you prefer to have it all under one cover, I’ve pulled together quarterly sets of the Weekly Journaling Prompts and have put them together in an ebook format you can print out and use. $7  at our Potentials Realized store. Check out volume #1 here.
  • Thursday’s Team Building Tips. Now it the mid-240 range, this Thursday series provides teams and team leaders with a question you can use the spark conversation and dialogue. Ideal for a team meeting, some of these have been made into a deck of 52 cards you can physically incorporate into your team meetings. What’s your favorite? Check out the series here, and share with us in the comments.
  • Mondays’ weekly Effective Virtual Conversations tip. For the past couple of years I have shared a weekly tip from my 2017 book Effective Virtual Conversations. That book focuses on ideas for making your virtual conversations (virtual meetings, virtual training, virtual mentoring more effective). Definitely a good place to check out as most of us have some sort of virtual touch point every week. Check

In the last 2000 posts there have been many other focus areas and series. While too many to name, some that you may be interested in are:
  • Leadership Myths
  • Teamwork in Uncertainty
  • Leadership a – z
  • The a-z of remote and virtual team activities

I look forward to continuing the journey with you! Continue to stay tuned.

Best wishes,
Jennifer
