Today's quote comes from me - "When it's uncertain, complex and changing, collaboration is needed".

One of the themes I work with teams and leaders around is the ability to become more fluid in approaches to help them with the ongoing complexity and change of their work. What once was more isolated to the type of work I did with the UN - ongoing change, ambiguity, ever changing situations, is now becoming much more common-place to everyone in the work force. It requires a different way of working, and a culture shift, for many organizations. This is not easy, nor is it quick. The change may take years to really take hold and be "lived" at all levels of an organization.

For teams and leaders, learning how to collaborate more effectively and efficiently, can be part of the shift to a more fluid working style. It's more likely that you may not have all the information you need, or can access yourself. It's likely you don't have all the relationships needed to get something done. Being able to liaise with, and work through others, is a critical skill set for today's workforce. A leaders' role, particularly one who is supporting a virtual or remote team, often becomes one of liaison - connecting others to resources and people.

What type of collaboration is needed? What is the level of skill around collaboration in your leadership? Team? I hope that you will take some time looking at the posts I've written on collaboration this month and in my earlier years of the blog. Check out past posts on collaboration here.

Today's Leadership quote comes from Fred Hilmer who wrote, " Leadership requires five ingredients - brains, energy, determination, trust and ethics. The key challenges of today are in terms of the last two - trust and ethics".

What do you see as essential ingredients for leadership? What would you indicate is the role of trust and ethics in your work right now?

#TEams365 #1348: Weekend Quote on Leadership

9/9/2017

My Saturday quote on leadership this week comes from Beth Revis who wrote:  "Power isn't control at all - - power is strength, and giving that strength to others. A leader isn't someone who forces others to make him stronger; a leader is someone willing to give his strength to others that they may have the strength to stand on their own"

Revis' quote is very appropriate for leadership in the virtual realm where one of the leader's primary roles is to empower their staff so they are able to do their best work in their context.

How do you define leadership? How are you empowering others to do their best work?

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #1334: Weekend Quote - intentionality

8/26/2017

Today's weekend quote comes from Benjamin Franklin who wrote "Drive thy business or it will drive thee.".

Earlier this week I was speaking in Washington to a large group of professional coaches at this year's International Coach Federation conference. In my presentation about Virtual Team and Group Coaching, I touched on the importance of planning and preparation. Going hand in hand with this is intentionality. Taking time to think about what you want to create and what you want to commit to. As business owners, and leaders, it can be important to be intentional and focused on how we want to move forward with our work. It is far to easy for the work to take over and create it's own wheel!

Take a few minutes this weekend to consider:
1. How are you driving your business/work or is it driving you?
2. What is it that you want to create in your work/business?
3. What boundaries are needed to allow you to work at your best?
4. What are you creating?
5. What else is important to consider around intentionality?

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

"Be bold - and mighty forces will come to your aid." - Basil King

Today's weekend quote from Basil King gets you thinking about being bold.

What does boldness look like or feel like for you?
What does being bold in your work look like?
What does being bold look like in your leadership?
What's possible if you are a little more bold in your work?
What would be the best outcome if you are more bold?

Have a great Saturday,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #1257: Saturday Quote

This week we've been exploring the topic of feedback. Instead of raising constructive feedback or pointing to difficult issues, sometimes managers "mask" their feedback and don't make it specific enough. Edwin Land wrote "politeness is the poison on collaboration". Just as with feedback, we need to be direct and candid with our feedback on how to make collaboration work more effectively.
As you consider an upcoming collaboration or partnership, where is it important to have a difficult conversation? How is a lack of candor not supporting the relationship?

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #1209: Sunday Quote

Today's quote comes from Cicero - "Silence is one of the great arts of conversation". As I write in my upcoming book, Effective Virtual Conversations, what many professionals are craving for is some silence. In my work as a coach, I know that the pause points of silence which are created in the coaching conversation is so valued by so many. In today's busy world, we often do not have many opportunities for silence.

What do you notice about silence? What impact does silence have?

Enjoy your Sunday and I hope that you may have a few minutes of silence throughout your day.

With best wishes,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #1104: Sunday Quote

We are a week into the start of the year and at this point a lot of people start to let go of their new year's resolutions. John C. Maxwell wrote:
"Failed plans should not be interpreted as a failed vision. Visions don't change, they are only refined. Plans rarely stay the same, and are scrapped or adjusted as needed. Be stubborn about the vision, but flexible with your plan. "

What plan needs some adjustment towards the vision you are working towards this year?

Check out last week's post on Getting Your New Year's Resolutions to Stick.

An old proverb says " A single arrow is easily broken, but not ten in a bundle". A huge part of the value of teamwork lies in the collection of strengths. What do you notice about how your work is stronger in collaboration than apart?  When does collaboration enhance or detract from your efforts?

With us moving into the last month of the year, how can you leverage the team capacity to achieve your most pressing business issues?

We're back tomorrow with E on the Teams365 Team Development Activity a-z series. You can check out a- d here.

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #1055: Conversation Quote

Recently we've been exploring the topic of virtual facilitation and one of the books I've been reading is an "oldie but a goodie" - Dialogue and the Art of Thinking Together by William Issacs.

A huge part of my work is around facilitating richer conversations, and helping leaders do this themselves. In coaching we often talk about crating the space for a  good conversation - the container. Issacs reminds us that "the field of conversation is made up of the energy, atmosphere, and memories of the people who are interacting".

How do those three things - energy, atmosphere and memories or history - help or hinder the important conversations you are having right now? What do you notice about how these shape your virtual or digital conversations?

Have a great Sunday,
Jennifer
