It’s the end of January and time to do another month-end wrap up post and monthly planning session. What are you noticing about your results this month?
 
As I have done for many months here at the Teams365 blog, I wanted to take a few minutes to support you in thinking through your month with these questions.
 
Consider the following questions as you reflect on the month of January:
  1. As you reflect on January, what have been your successes and accomplishments?
  2. What routines, or practices, have supported you this month?
  3. What are you most proud of?
  4. What successes this month do you want to duplicate?
  5. What top 3 learnings have you head that you want to carry forward?
  6. What key relationships have helped you so far this year? Which ones need attention?
  7. What has hindered or gotten in the way?
  8. What needs to get carried forward to February?
  9. What does your team need to be acknowledged for?
 
 
Consider these questions as you look ahead to February:
  1. What are your key priorities for February?
  2. What are your top 3 goals – personally? Professionally?
  3. What projects will you START? STOP? CONTINUE?
  4. What will you need to place attention on?
  5. What changes do you want to make in February?
  6. What habits do you want to leverage?
  7. When will you check in to explore your progress, and make changes?
  8. What resources do you want to tap into?
  9. Who can help you be successful this month?

Teams365 #2952 - Team Tool Is/Is Not

While it might sound clear, the person hearing this may have a very different idea of what’s needed. To avoid assumptions, create clarity. This can be assisted by what Steve Robbins calls the Is/Is Not tool. In an Is/Is Not tool, we want to have people articulate what the report is and is not.
 
Let’s look at the report writing example more in depth. To really leverage the Is/Is Not tool, you would want to get even more granular. For example,
The report is:
• Detailed
• Geared for our customers
• Showcasing at least six examples
• Including _(quantity)_ photos of the work in action
• Including _(quantity)_ stakeholders’ voices
 
The report is not:
• Video based • Future focused
• Geared for staff
• Focused on what didn’t work
 
In any projects you have coming up, consider how you might be able to use an Is/Is Not framework to help create clarity around the results. This helps to make things very specific and avoid assumptions. A key virtual tip is to name assumptions.

Today's Flashback brings us to- Learning only needs to take place in the classroom. For employees of all levels ongoing learning can be an important part of development, capacity building and also employee engagement.

There is a myth that we need to send "people out for training". As someone who has spent significant time in the last few decades supporting formal and informal educational initiatives, internally and externally in organizations, this is myth.
 
Today there are so many options we can provide for employees to help them learn and grow. Consider these:
 
Job Shadowing with another peer or someone in a different department. Cross-training can be an important process with strengthening culture and also building a more agile workforce.
 
Special projects - Special projects can also provide an opportunity for employees who may not be able to move horizontally to continue to expand their skill set. In my former world of work, special projects I was tasked with continued to sharpen my skills and expand my comfort zone. I attribute the experience on some of these special projects as key experiences in helping me run a successful learning business today.
 
Mentoring - Mentoring continues to be an overlooked development opportunity to build capacity across organizations. In recent conversations I have had with mentors and proteges I support through designing mentoring training with their organization, I continue to hear what an important learning process it is and "why didn't we start earlier"? Contact me to explore what mentoring might look like in your organization for 2016. Mentoring can also happen virtually and doesn't need to be face-to-fa e.
 
E-Learning  - E-Learning can be a great tool for on-demand and self-paced learning, especially when your organization needs learning now, and in smaller batches. E-Learning is not just about PowerPoint and in fact can be very interactive This year we developed a Coaching and Mentoring E-Learning program, which is now being rolled out in health care. Contact me for more information on this training package.
 
Coaching - Bringing small groups together to explore topics related to strengths, styles, is another way to build capacity and foster learning (and relationships!) within organizations. Some of the projects i have been involved with in supporting this year around group coaching include design and development of new group coaching programs for leaders, and train-the-trainers for internal staff in group coaching skills.

Talent management in the remote, hybrid, and virtual space often feels disjointed and not very clear.
 
In supporting others to do their best work, think about what you want to make more clear in terms of learning opportunities, career pathways, and growth across the entire lifecycle from recruitment to ongoing development opportunities.
 
It’s difficult to communicate our culture in the virtual, remote, and hybrid space. This is one of the key elements which will help people recognize if they want to be part of it. In terms of creating a robust culture, we want to make sure things are visible. This is translated through our brand, our mottos, our mantras, and even our digital icons. Talent management can also be laid out visually in terms of different pathways, to make the journey from recruitment to onboarding to new employee and seasoned employee. Consider how you can also make your learning process more visual—how training, coaching, and mentoring all connect.
 
What are the things which need more visibility? When would people benefit by coming together under one roof (where possible), and what are the best elements done in person and virtually?
