TEAMS365 #2524 – Flashback Friday – Year-end 1-1 Questions

11/27/2020

Picture
This week as part of the Flashback Friday series I am reaching back to the November 27th, 2018 post. I think you’ll find this valuable as we step into the new year.

It’s that time where we start rolling into year end conversations, holding one on ones (coaching conversations) individually and with the team.

As we move into the end of the year, it is invaluable to schedule some one on one time with each team member. Today’s post includes a selection of 18 questions you might include in those conversations (pick and choose as appropriate). Great year end conversations help to create a pause to reflect achievements, synthesize learning and look ahead to the future.

You may want to incorporate these questions into your conversation:
  1. What are the key achievements you have been most proud of this year?
  2. What projects worked well?
  3. Which projects didn’t go so well?
  4. What was your learning there?
  5. What connections/relationships have been most valuable this year?
  6. Which relationships need attention next year?
  7. What’s been your biggest learning this year? What experiences provided that?
  8. What has worked well with the team this year? What hasn’t?
  9. What feedback do you have for me as the leader? (What’s worked and what hasn’t)
  10. What’s one suggestion for how we could do things differently as a team next year?

Looking ahead to next year:
  1. What are you excited about?
  2. What habits do you want to cultivate or lean into?
  3. What do you want to do to keep growing your skills?
  4. By December 31, 2019 what do you hope you will have achieved? OR by January 1, 2020, what do you hope you will have achieved? (Notice the impact of the difference one day makes!  Yes, we are wrapping up a decade next year)
  5. What are your top 3 priorities next year?
  6. What feedback and support are you looking for?
  7. What would be useful in terms of our 1-1 time?
  8. What else is going to help you do your best work?

What else do you like to ask at this time of the year? Please let us know by sharing in the comments below.

Best wishes,
Jennifer

TEAMS365 #2188 – Flashback Friday: 10 Questions foR Creating Your New YEars Plan

12/27/2019

This week’s Flashback Friday takes a look at one of the 2017 year-end posts focusing on revisiting #1093: Ten Questions to support you in creating your plan for the new year.

As we go to step into the new year and a new decade, you’ll want to build in some time to review your successes from this last year AND look ahead to 2020.

Here are 10 questions from Teams365 #1093 to help you do some visioning for the new year and decade.

As we look towards the end of the year and the start of the new year, consider these questions:

  1. What are your top 5 goals for the new year – individually? Collectively?  Organizationally?
  2. What successes from the last year or two can you build on?
  3. What is going to help you create momentum in the new year?
  4. What activities were core to the success of your team this past year?
  5. What do you want the theme of the year to be?
  6. What systems will be important for you to put in place or refine?
  7. What will help accelerate results?
  8. What will be key relationships to foster or focus on in the new year and decade?
  9. What pauses do you want to build in for reflection and capturing lessons learned? Schedule these in your calendar now!
  10. When you look back on December 31, 2020 what do you hope the year will have brought to you?

What time do you want to build into your schedule next year for regular reflection? Do it now, perhaps by setting a clock or timer!

These questions are evergreen and are still as relevant as they were a few years ago!

Enjoy your reflection!
Jennifer

TEAMS365 #2157 – Getting Prepared to Wrap Up & 2020 Vision

11/26/2019

Picture
As we arc towards the end of the year, it’s time to focus in on our 2020 vision. I’ve been enjoying hosting a number of events in the last few weeks around visioning for the new year, and new decade.

If you weren’t able to join us last week for the 2020 Vision session, please check out the recording here. You can download an associated worksheet here as well. The session will take about 30 minutes to go through.

Having a vision is important for a number of reasons. Our vision is important as it can help us to:
  • Move through the ups and downs of everyday business. It can provide an anchor when things are turbulent.
  • Stay focused and make decisions. It may make it easier to say yes to things that align with where we want to go and say no to things that are out of range.
  • Pull us forward and motivate us when things are not working well.

Today’s post also serves as an opportunity to pause and take stock of where things are at. What are the things that need attention and need to get done before the end of the year? Is there anything you haven’t yet accomplished that you do want to put attention on?

As part of today’s post, be sure to grab a pen and participate in the 2020 Vision session I facilitated last week. You will find it here on YOUTUBE. Enjoy!

Best wishes,
Jennifer

TEAMS365 #2144 – Planning for and scheduling the last one-on-one conversations of the year

11/13/2019

Picture
As we step into the “last mile” of 2019 (i.e. the last six weeks, give or take a few, especially if your business shuts down for the holidays), one of the key activities you will want to make sure you build in time for is a set of year-end one-on-ones with staff. While many organizations have moved to an ongoing feedback and performance management culture, it can be important to ensure that final one-on-ones don’t get forgotten in the rush of year-end.

Some of the elements you may want to include in your final one-on-ones are:
  • A look back at the key highlights for the individual this year.
  • Reflections and sharing on key performance witnessed – things that they did very well, times when you saw their strengths in action.
  • What were their major accomplishments? What skills and experiences were learned/acquired? How can this support them going forward?
  • Discussion around areas for growth and improvement in the new year.
  • Looking ahead to the new year, what are the key priorities based on organizational and department goals?
  • What are their key learning goals? Where do they want to grow? What changes do they want to make?
  • Support needs for the new year.
  • Learning needs for the new year.  Identification of any areas they would like to acquire more skills within in their work.
  • Goals they have for themselves and their career.

What other items might you include in your year-end one-on-ones? Every team and organization is different. While not all of these categories may reflect the type of performance conversations you typically have, it can be useful to invite your team to consider the bigger context of their work (i.e. how has this year helped them with future career aspirations).

While it’s top of mind, I hope that you will take a few minutes to make note of the questions you want to include in everyone’s discussion.

Enjoy!

tEAMS365 #2143 – Creating Focus in The Last Mile of The Year

11/12/2019

Picture
From the time we get out of bed to the time we turn off the light, we are faced with a slew of decisions which need to be made every day.

Creating enhanced focus in the last six weeks of the year (what is often referred to as the “last mile”) can help a team, and organization, soar through the last part of the year, rather than frantically work to the end. This has been a focus of three of the annual coaching groups I host - The Learning Lab and Design Studio, the Coaching Biz Growth Lab, and the Teams365 Leadership Lab

Today’s post gets you thinking about several areas you may have some level of control over:

#1 – Decide and communicate what the key priorities are for the end of the year. What is an absolute MUST complete? What can be let go of (if anything) in order to make sure this can be completed.

#2 – Weed out the elements of work which are distractions and/or not adding value. This may be part of a wider discussion and review of your results for the year/decade. In the bigger picture, what could be let go of, in service to the work that really needs to get done?

#3 – Consider who is best tasked to do the work. There is often a fallacy that “everyone needs to be involved” or everyone needs to collaborate. We don’t want to collaborate for collaborations sake. Who is best suited to run with which tasks? Does everyone involved understand the timelines and contingencies (i.e. what needs to get completed first, next etc.?).

#4 – Consider questions around AMPLIFICATION and/or x ing your work (as in 10xing). What’s going to help to ensure success? What will that take?

#5 – Where has scope creep occurred? It’s inevitable that projects expand during their life cycle. Sometimes they expand too much. Where has scope creep occurred and what needs to be brought back into focus? Is there need for an extension or a part 2 of the projects you are working on?

#6 – Where can digital distractions be minimized? Recently, I shared a post on digital distractions – Teams365 #1933.  Read it here. What are those distractions and where can these be minimized?

What’s going to help you thrive through the last part of the year?

Wishing you the best,
Jennifer
