#Teams365 #507; Check It off Tip: ParKinson's Rule

5/22/2015

Picture
Today's Check it off tip is a reminder of what Tim Ferriss calls the Partkinson's Rule. In his book The Four Day Workweek, he posits that tasks can expand to the amount of time we give them. Consider some of your recent rpojects. How did the time allotted expand, or bleed out, into other areas if you were not careful.

As you look ahead to the rest of this month, or the month of June, what time do you want to give to each project. How can you work to contain this?

Consider how the Parkinson's Rule might really affect you in your work.

Here's an article by Joey Falconer: How to Use Parkinson's Law To Your Advantage

Joel Runyon's Article : A Beginner's Guide to Parkinson's Law

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #486: Check It Off Tip; Get Clear On Your Priorities

5/1/2015

Picture
Today's check it off tip gets you thinking about your priorities. What are your top three priorities right now? How do these link to what's important to you as a professional?

What will it take for you to complete your priorities?

What could get int he way of your priorities? What do you need to say NO to in order so that does not happen?

At the start of a new month communicating this month's priorities can help team members create a shared focus and align their efforts.

Who do you need to communicate your priorities to?

Have a great Friday,
Jennifer

#TEams365 #479: Check It Off Tip: Clear Away RoadBlocks

4/24/2015

Picture
A large part of the team leaders role is to remove roadblocks so that the team can get things done. This week, notice what roadblocks exist. Is it:
  • Lack of information
  • Too many meetings
  • Lack of access to key decision makers
  • Unclear priorities
  • Not enough time
  • Not enough people
  • Other?
Consider what roadblocks exist for the team, together. They may have different insights from what you are aware of.

What specific actions will you take this week to identify and clear roadblocks?

#Teams365 #472: Check It Off Tip: Clear It

While it might seem like adding time that you don't have, clearing things off and out, like your desk, or inbox, on a regular basis can create the space for new energy and clarity. What needs to get cleared in your office right now? Is it your inbox, old files? Take 15 minutes today to clear something and notice what new is created as a result of this.

Have a great Friday,
Jennifer

#teams365 #465: Check It Off Tips: Workbursts - 50/10 Rule

4/10/2015

Picture
Today's Check it Off Tip introduces what several call the 50/10 to productivity or what I like to refer to as work bursts. Over the last decade there has been  more research on focus and how the brain works optimally. Several time management professionals  have encouraged people to work in 50 minutes of intensive focus, followed by 10 minutes of rest.

Here's a great blog post by the Productive Philosopher on their application of the 50/10 rule.

How might you experiment with the 50/10 rule this week?

Best,
Jennifer

#Teams365#458: Check It Off Tip - what needs to Get dumped?

4/3/2015

Picture
There is something to be said about "I'll get to it someday" and in today's busy world, many things on our to-do list DO have an expiry date and we keep carrying them forward, and forward, and forward.

Today's check it off tip is an encouragement for you to take a look at your 2015 list of things to do. What haven't you touched yet on that list? Is it time to dump it? When's the expiry date? Is it past due?

Have a wonderful and relaxing weekend,
Jennifer

#TEams365 #451: Check It Off Tip - Color Code It

3/27/2015

Picture
Today's Check it off tip is a reminder which may appeal to those who are more visually inclined, which some researchers say is about 60% of the adult population.

The use of color to help organize email groups/contacts, files as well as key events on your calendar are helpful in ordering a lot of information. These colors can help to sort and make it easier to get to information quickly. In an environment where we swim in data most days, anything we can do to get a handle of mass is usually good. Consider your email box. How much email do you get every day? What would happen if you color coded certain key corresponders? How might that help these stand out. Certainly as someone who gets more than a hundred emails most days, color helps me in knowing what needs follow-up and when.

Consider in your world, where color can support you in organizing, and getting more done in less time.

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

This week’s check it off tip is a reminder of something most of us have heard since we were kids. Practice makes perfect. As we age when wed have to learn new things we sometimes forget that learning does not occur overnight. Many things take practice, feedback, adjustment, action, feedback, adjustment and action.

What are the new things you are learning about right now? Where could more practice benefit you?

Have a great weekend,

#TEams365 #330: Check It off Tip: What Are your Big Rocks today?

3/6/2015

Picture
Decades ago Stephen Covey introduced us to the concept of big rocks. Using his famous analogy he encouraged us to think about what are the big rocks or big tasks we want to focus on today? By placing these in first, it's easier to fit in the smaller items around them. In contrast, if we lead from our small things first, our big priorities and items often don't get done.

You can view his video clip on this here (Search for Big Rocks Trailer)
.

What are the big rocks you want to focus on today?
