#Teams 365 #120 - What Do You Want to Celebrate?

4/30/2014

Picture
As April comes to a close it's an opportunity to sit back and celebrate what you have achieved as a team so far this year. For some it is the end of a fiscal year and the start of a new one. For others, we're now a third of the way through the year.

April has marked the 10th anniversary of my business. It has been a month to celebrate our last ten years and recognize how many teams, leaders and professionals we have been able to work with. Thousands of hours of coaching conversations have ensued with individuals, teams and groups, I've delivered dozens of speaking engagements, and held several hundred days of workshops and retreats. Two parts of my work that I still really enjoy are that each day is different, as is each program. Also, I love the fact that I get to see on a regular basis the new ideas, insights and actions being taken on the part of professionals, which, over time, have started changing organizations, and organizational culture.

As you move into this final day of April, what do you and your team want to celebrate?

Today's photo comes from the Conversation Sparker Cards (TM), which I have developed for team leaders, trainers, coaches and other people who work with teams and groups. Looking to prompt some conversation? I hope that you will check out these cards as a possible option for adding to your meeting toolkit. More info can be found at ConversationSparker.com.

As Kool and the Gang sang, "Celebrate good times, come on!"

Best wishes,
Jennifer

Teams #119: Why Not?

4/29/2014

Today's post poses the question WHY NOT? Books like Simon Sinek's Start with  Why have been instrumental in getting leaders to think of the bigger WHY - purpose -  in our work as leaders.

Asking Why Not is also an important question for leaders and teams. Asking Why Not helps us connect with what else is possible, and what assumptions, possibly unfounded, are we making.

Where do you need to be asking Why Not?

As you consider this question, what's really clear?

Today's photo comes from The Conversation Sparker Cards(TM) a product which I developed for team leaders, coaches, trainers and other facilitators. just as the name suggests, they are geared to get conversations going, or sparked.  You can use them at team meetings, workshops, retreats or evening in webinars (a virtual license is available). The deck includes 70 post-card sized photo cards, 22 of which include questions posed to spark dialogue. You can learn more, and order your own deck at http://www.conversationsparker.com. Enjoy!

With best wishes,
Jennifer

Teams #118: Five Behaviors of a CohesivE Team

4/28/2014

We are very pleased to announce that we are one of the first organizations in North America to become Partners with the Five  Behaviors of a Cohesive Team (TM), a new team assessment and development program.

What does this program do?
The program helps teams understand how, as a team, they score on the key components of The Five Behaviors model: trust, conflict, commitment, accountability, and results. Each individual on the team will also understand
their own personality style and their team members styles, based on the DiSC® model:
D: Dominance, i: Influence, S: Steadiness, and C: Conscientiousness, and how their style contributes to the team’s overall success.

Who is the Program For?

The program is designed exclusively for intact teams and work groups. The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team harnesses the power of Everything DiSC and the clarity and simplicity of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team model.

You can download a brochure about the program here.

We are starting to book Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team programs for May, June and July. If you think this would benefit your team, please contact me directly to set up a conversation about how we can bring this program to you and your organization.

With best wishes,
Jennifer

Teams 117: April Check-In

4/27/2014

As we near the end of the month, it's a good time to take stock.

Here are three questions to consider this weekend:

1. What have been your major achievements this month? Consider them as a leader, as a team, and individually?
2. What still needs to get done? What projects are needing some closure?
3. Next month, where do you need to turn your attention? What's it going to take to do this?

As I have written in past posts, it can be very useful to write the answers to the questions down - whether you have a file on your computer or keep a separate journal.

Capturing key accomplishments each month will make it easy when performance reviews come around, and having written goals for each month helps to keep the focus.

Teams 365 #116: Who Would you Add To Your Team?

4/26/2014

Who would you add to your team to maximize your results? What skills or approaches are not there, or not as developed.

This weekend consider the overall team composition. You may want to pull out the SWOT activity we did back a month ago to see what you flagged then about team needs and strengths.

Teams 365 #115: Values: Alignment, Derailers and Behavior

4/25/2014

Values serve as a compass and shape our behaviors. In any team context there may be multiple sets of values which exist, some which align, and others that may not.

When values align, behaviors support productivity, efficiency and positive relationships. When values don't align, disengagement, lack of productivity, and conflict may emerge.

It is important to look at how values at the varying levels of individual, team and organization play out. Where are they in conflict? Where are they in concert?

As a team it can be useful to identify the values which shape your culture. How do these differ from individual team members? How do individual team members who share similar values define what their values mean. For example, two team members may both have a value of excellence. What does it mean to each one of them? What behaviors demonstrate that excellence?

How do the team values intersect with your organizational values?
Where are they aligned and where are they a little different?

Retreats, and team meetings are a good place to explore values, and behaviors - the enablers and the derailers. What conversation do you need to have in your team?

Teams 365 #114: STyles and Principles

4/24/2014

Today's quote comes from Thomas Jefferson, reminding us about the importance of being firm with our principles, and adapting when it's about styles.

Questions to consider:

Where do you need to adapt your style to meet the needs of the group?
Where do you need to hold your ground as a leader?

I do a lot of work around styles using the Everything DiSC with both teams and leaders. What styles are existing in your team? What do you need to be aware of regarding your style, the strengths and blindspots it creates?  Curious about learning more about your own style?

Contact me to learn more about the DiSC and how it could be incorporated into an upcoming workshop or coaching engagement with you, and/or your team.

Teams 365 #113: Leadership Challenges Quote

Today's quote comes from Jim Rohn, and points our attention to the dichotomies and tensions great leaders straddle.

As a leader, or aspiring leader, how are you seen?

Teams 365 #112: The Foundations of Great Teamwork

4/22/2014

Visuals capture so much in one picture. Today I wanted to share with you a quick drawing that was made for our business, which integrates most of the focus areas I've been writing on these last four months and which the bulk of our work with teams involves.

Questions to Consider:
As you look at the drawing below, what are the areas you excel in?
Which ones need some shoring up?
What support do you need to move the needle on these?
How can we help?

Let us know! You can reach me directly at (416)996-TEAM (8326) or by email.

Teams 365 #111: Teamwork Quote

4/21/2014

Today's quote is a reminder from Patrick Lencioni about the foundation of teamwork is building trust.

A few months ago I did a short audio on behaviors team leaders can practice to build trust. You can listen back into it here.

What is the state of play with trust in your team right now? Steven Covey writes about building a trust bank account in his work, Smart Trust.

Questions to Consider:
What are the behaviors adding to the account, and what are the ones withdrawing trust? As you consider the past month, what's the balance in the account - positive or negative?
