#TEAMS365 #2039 – Monthly Round up and Month in Reflection

7/31/2019

Picture
This month we have explored a variety of topics resonant for the mid-year rhythm:
  • Digital Detox
  • Work-life
  • Focus
  • Simplification
  • Habits
  • Creativity

What are you noticing about your work flow and energy right now?

As we step into the month of August, the work routine may adjust once again, AND I hope that you will be able to return back to these posts once again.

Today is the last day of the month, signalling a time to pause and take stock on what the last month was like, and do some planning for the month ahead.
Here are a variety of questions you may want to explore:
Looking back to the month of July:
  1. What are you pleased with achieving?
  2. What didn’t get completed but is going to be carried forward?
  3. What strengths did you leverage this month?
  4. What got in the way of your plans/achievements?
  5. What helped to MAGNIFY or AMPLIFY things?
  6. What helped you FOCUS?
  7. What helped you SIMPLIFY?
  8. What else is important to note about your month? (metrics, lessons learned, other…)
  9. What did you do to renew?
  10. What habits did you lean into?

Looking ahead to the month ahead:
  1. What are your major goals?
  2. What do you want to focus on?
  3. What do you want to let go of?
  4. What will help you simplify?
  5. What will help you MAGNIFY or AMPLIFY?
  6. What habits do you want to focus on?
  7. What relationships do you want to pay attention to?
  8. What actions/projects do you want to complete, not matter what?
  9. What else is important to note?

Enjoy your reflection!

Best wishes,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2038 – Focus in the Hot Days of Summer

7/30/2019

Picture
Some readers will find themselves mid-way through summer, with another month until the fall routine kicks in with Labor Day.

As I have written this month, simplification, renewal and digital detox are all topics which rise to the surface at this time of year when we move to a summertime routine.

Whether it’s due to the weather, summer time travel, or different working routines, changing our schedules and ways of working can lead to new lengths.

It may be useful to pause and take stock of the last month and notice:
  • Where has your focus been? How has this helped? Hindered?
  • What’s worked for you with your routine?
  • What do you want to make sure you continue doing, even as things speed up?
  • What have you “let go of….” (this may be part of your work routine, tasks or regular schedule”?
  • What space has this created?
  • What do you further want to simplify as you move into a fall routine?
  • What focus do you want to have going forward into August? Into the rest of the year?

Revisit your annual vision and make adjustments as you would like.

Warm regards,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2037 – Effective Virtual Conversations #104: Building and Eroding Trust

7/29/2019

Picture
This week’s Effective Virtual Conversations tip takes us into a core topic for virtual conversations – that of TRUST. Without Trust and Connection in a virtual conversation, it’s unlikely that people will engage. As I write in Effective Virtual Conversations, part of creating a more engaged conversation space is about building trust and connection.

Today’s post gets you to stop and consider these questions:
  1. What is helping TRUST in your virtual relationships?
  2. What is hindering TRUST in your virtual relationships?

Things may be further magnified in a virtual space given that we don’t see the “full picture”, only a small sliver of their world via the screen.

Some ways to boost trust in the virtual space might include:
  • Taking time to share more about your work and how that relationship fits into it
  • Making conversation touch points more frequent
  • Including both formal and informal relationship building time
  • Being intentional in creating agreements about how you will work together. This could include things like – how often will we communicate? What is the best way to communicate?
  • Taking time to share more about yourselves (as appropriate)

Reducing Trust might include:
  • Not following through
  • Failing to provide appropriate information
  • Not letting a partner know of something in a timely manner
  • Not being clear in directions which leads to a faulty end result

What can build or erode trust with your partners?

Best wishes,
Jennifer

This week’s Weekly Journaling Prompt gets you to consider the question – "Where would you like to savour?" One of the themes this month (similar to yesterday's post) is to speed up in order to slow down. With perhaps more focus or time in hand, where would you like to savour? What would be of benefit to spend some time looking at?

Let us know what gets unearthed with this week’s journaling prompt?

#TEAMS365 #2034 - Flashback Friday - New Leader Assumptions to Reframe

7/26/2019

Picture
July and August is a popular month for new leaders to assume their posts. With this in mind, I thought it would be useful to take a look back to a great post geared for new team leaders entitled “Five Leadership Assumptions for New Leaders to Reframe”.

Here’s what I wrote back in this 2016 post:

As a new leader there are a number of assumptions you can make which can lead to a lot of problems and/or headaches for you and your team.  Here they are in random order.

Assumption #1  - Everyone needs and wants the same type of support.
In fact, every team member will have their own strengths, styles and personalities. Take time at the start to learn who each person is and how they want to be supported. Areas such as how they want to be communicated with can vary tremendously from team member to team member.

If we don’t bust this assumption chances are many of your team members will not connect with you. Trying to support everyone in the same fashion can also lead to lower levels of engagement and trust.

Assumption #2 - I need to do everything myself.
As a leader delegation is key. It’s important that we empower the team to do their work. Micro-monitoring is more important than micro-managing. While delegation is often considered an art form, mastering this skill early on can mean the difference between flow and overwhelm. For more tips on delegation, view this recent Linked In Pulse post I shared a few weeks ago on Delegation.

Assumption #3 - I always need to say yes .
From boundaries with your time, to learning to say NO (diplomatically to your boss and team) creating boundaries is a key skill for team leaders. As someone who leads from the middle - supporting those above and below you - being able to say no tactfully is an important skill to master as are the skills of negotiation. If it's impossible to say NO you may need to say "I can do this, but it will mean I can't do that. What do recommend as the primary focus?".

Assumption #4 - This is going to be easy.
As a leader we need to often make the hard calls and difficult decisions. Some naively step into leadership thinking that it will be a bigger pay cheque and similar work. Not quite. While things won't always be easy, the learning curve does slow down. Your first leadership role may present you wit the steepest learning curve. For those that enjoy challenge, successive leadership roles will usually provide additional challenge in different ways.

Rather than feeling like leadership is going to be hard, what's another perspective you can step into around that?

Assumption #5 - You are going to be just like the other person who filled the role.
Leaders can benefit from busting this assumption early on. As a new leader you'll be bringing referent skills, experiences and a different personality to the table. Make your work life easier by not putting on additional pressure trying to be just like the "other leader". Reminding your team and your boss and stakeholders about your unique strengths can create a win-win for all involved.

What other assumptions do you notice you are holding around leadership? What needs to be reframed?

#TEAMS365 #2033 - Team Building Tip 246

7/25/2019

Picture
This week’s Team Building Tip gets you to consider the question “Where would it be useful to sprint?”. Many current business and team practices are experimenting with more rapid iterations and cycles, where things that used to be allocated weeks, are now being allocated hours.

What are the things that would benefit from a sprint in shorter cycles?

Over the last three years I have been experimenting with using sprints and hacks in a couple of program formats including program design and some business planning. While the initial sprint may not lead to the full-blown end product, it often leads to some new, quicker ideas being ready for testing and launch. With today’s business cycle being quicker and faster, getting programs out faster can be of benefit.

What are the areas you and your team might find it useful to sprint?

Best,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2032 - Fostering Creativity In Your Team

7/24/2019

Picture
Following up to yesterday’s post on Creativity, today’s post gets you to consider creativity in your team context. Just as we saw in yesterday’s post, there are many things that boost creativity.

In addition to the articles I pointed to yesterday, let’s take a look at these seven elements mentioned in The Power of Idea’s article.

This article points to creativity being fostered by solitude and being supported by an environment of trying things out.

What are you doing to foster down time for team members and/or experimentation time. Companies like Google, have been pointed to for many years as being generous with the time allocated for employees to take on personal projects, as well as experimental ideas.

Questions you will want to explore as a team around this topic include:
  • What does creativity mean to us as individuals on the team? As a team as a whole?
  • What’s important about creativity in our work?
  • What value does creativity provide, or what does it add to our mission and vision?
  • If it is important, what can we do to build more creative time into our approaches?

This week as I have been writing these two posts I have found that I mentally have collapsed creativity with innovation. In fact, the posts were spurred by reading a book I had purchased thinking it was about coaching for creativity, when in fact it was about coaching for innovation.

One thing to note is that creativity and innovation are two different things. I was curious what sort of research has been done on the link between creativity and innovation and so I went to look for some research. Here’s a study/meta-analysis done exploring the link between creativity and innovation. Sarooghi, Hessamoddin et al. “Examining the relationship between creativity and innovation: A meta-analysis of organizational, cultural, and environmental factors ☆.” (2015).

Take look at it here.

Wishing you the best,
Jennifer

#TEAMS365 #2031 - Creativity in the Workplace: Six Questions to Reflect On

Picture
As part of the summer series this month, today’s blog post shifts to a focus on creativity. As we unwind from the busy pace of the rest of the year, we may find that our creative juices start to flow. It’s often said that we need space and time to get our creative spirit awakened.

Creativity can take many forms and it can also be incorporated to our every day experience. Today’s post is an invitation for you to consider what creativity means for you, when it occurs and what it can look like more fully in your work.
There are some really good articles which give us a better understanding of creativity. Check out these articles:

7 Surprising Facts About Creativity According to Science from Fast Company

Jillian Groening’s article: 52 Science-Based Facts About the Creative Mind

Here are a number of questions for you to consider as you think about creativity in your work:
  1. What does creativity mean for me?
  2. I’d like to ____ in order to bring more creativity into my work.
  3. My favorite creative outlet as a younger person was….
  4. The time of day I find I am most creative is…./the places I am most creative are….
  5. The ingredients I need in order to be creative is…
  6. I’d like to ___ in order to be more creative.

A few weeks ago I published a 30 minute call as part of my 2018 Coaching Business Builder workbook series entitled “Summer Projects for Coaches”. Even if you are not a coach, you may find that this resource is of interest to you.

#TEAMS365 #2030 - EFFECTIVE VIRTUAL CONVERSATIONS TIP #103

7/22/2019

Picture
This week’s Effective Virtual Conversations Tip is #103 in the series and gets you to consider the question “What’s getting outdated and needs an update?”. In the realm of technology things are regularly getting updated - from devices, to software, to systems.

In your work, and office right now, what could benefit from an update? What is looking a little frayed or worn?

Also consider what you need to archive and/or back up.

Updating items could include:
  • Devices
  • Cords
  • Back-ups
  • Presentation Materials (i.e. slide decks, workbooks)
  • The platform you are using
  • The way you archive materials
  • Welcome emails/typical emails sent to people

What might benefit from an update?

Enjoy the reflection and action,
Jennifer
