One of the themes I’ve been talking a lot about in recent months as we moved into year end, and now are in the start of the year is that Metrics Matter. On an individual level in our own planning, it can be very useful to note things like:
  • Key achievements
  • Time spent on different activities (work, meetings, troubleshooting, coaching, learning, etc.)
  • The things you actually accomplish in any given day

On a team level, starting the year with a conversation around metrics, achievements and goals can be really important. As part of the start of year kick off you may want to:
  • Note key metrics (where you are now, where you want to go by end of the year, and what your check in touchpoints are)
  • Note key goals
  • Identify aspirations and intentions – as I mentioned in an earlier blog post this year, aspirations and intentions are often wider in focus and help to anchor things.

​Today may have been your first day back into the office or you may be gearing up for Monday when it’s back to work for many of us. This Friday I wanted to link into a series of earlier posts I had written which you might want to share with your team as you go about clarifying your 2020 goals.

Here are some questions I had included in Teams365 #710 –

Today's Six Leadership Questions a day gets you to think about goal setting. Consider these questions:
  • What are the top priorities for the team right now? In the next quarter? The next year?
  • Who will help the team be successful with these?
  • How do the team goals connect with individual goals? Organizational goals?
  • Does everyone understand how the goals and achievement will be measured?
  • Does each team member understand how they will interface/impact each of our key priorities?
  • If we shift our goal horizon from the practical and tactical, what do we notice? (Another way to look at this is if we move to look at our goals from the big picture or 30,000-foot view, what do we notice?

This week’s Team Building Tip gets you to think about the question “Where do you want to get more grounded?”. In today’s volatile, ever-changing environment, it can be very important to be grounded. Grounding ourselves helps us feel anchored, even if things are ever-changing. Our foundation usually consists of our values, beliefs and ways of working.

These foundations help us with decision making, prioritizing, and communicating what’s important, even if everything else is changing.

In PlanDoTrack, I provide several exercises for professionals to explore their values and belief systems. If you have a copy of the book, be sure to check out Section’s 1 and 4 exercises including the Iceberg, Values Ecosystem and some of the Values check list.

When we are able to work and lead from our values things become aligned, and usually flow more freely.

This week’s Effective Virtual Conversations tip asks you to consider the area of Goal Setting. Providing space for people to set and share their goals in the virtual space can be an important connector in the virtual space.

If group members are meeting over an extended time, it may be useful to have people share their progress using a:
  • One Page Plan
  • A Dashboard

Tracking goals can be a motivating process. To avoid it becoming a “check box activity” or goal fatigue, provide opportunities for people to connect into what’s important about the goal, or the overarching WHY.

In exploring the why you might ask questions like “What’s possible?”, “Three years from now, where do you want to be?”

Questions to consider:
  • What are the key goals you are focusing on this month?
  • How is progress towards these goals coming?
  • What is the WHY behind the goal? What would you like to make sure you experience?
  •  What do you want to do to keep your goals visible?

#TEAMS365 #1969 – Teamwork in Uncertainty – Comfort With The Unknown

​Today’s blog post gets us thinking about values. Values serve as anchors or a compass, leading the way or anchoring us when we need to make decisions, prioritize and focus.
​
In an uncertain context, being clear about our behaviors as a team is critical. As we go to explore our values, we may first want to consider what our values are individually. To do this, we might explore the following questions:
  • What is important to me?
  • What are the things I will take a stand for?
  • What’s absolutely essential to have in my work/life?
  • What makes me angry/happy/at ease?
 
All of these questions will usually point to a value which is important.
​
Underneath the words of a value are the behaviors. What do the values look like in action? If I were to take my phone into the workplace and record behaviors, what would I see?

As a team, and especially a remote team, having a focus on values can help during periods of uncertainty. Even though the context may change, hopefully our values are not changing in the arena.

As a team, this week consider what your top 3 operating values are this year. What are you committed to, no matter what? Behaviorally, what do these values look like in action?
