Teams365 #3252: Clarifying expectations

Clarifying expectations is critical to success in any workspace. What are you doing to clarify expectations as a team?

Here are some of the expectations I highlighted in an earlier Teams365 blog post:

This week’s Team Building Tip is a “Remote Work Enabler”. Throughout the upcoming weeks I’ll be including a number of special items to keep in mind to help your remote team THRIVE, not just SURVIVE!

The first remote work enabler I wanted to point to was that of expectation. In a remote team, we may be part of multiple matrix relationships, which makes it even more important for us to be clear on our expectations about HOW THINGS ARE DONE.

Teams can benefit from taking time to create a WAYS OF WORKING, or Team Agreements about how they will operate together.

What are the team expectations around?:
·         Showing up for meetings
·         Focus at meetings
·         Being prepared
·         Being punctual
·         Quality of work
·         Surfacing issues
·         Addressing difficult conversations
·         How you interact with each other
·         Share information
·         Connect with others outside of the organization
·         Participate in ongoing learning

Each one of these could spark a conversation around multiple factors.

When expectations are not clear we run the risk of doing things differently, having varied output, and most importantly, creating assumptions that might not be founded. These can have the most detrimental impact in the long run.
As a team, what do expectations do you want to make clear?

This week we’re going to dig back into Fostering Gratitude Here’s what I wrote back in 2014 as part of Teams365 #331-

Many readers will be celebrating Thanksgiving today. Even if we aren't it is a great opportunity to pause for a few minutes and think about what we are grateful for. I wanted to share a recent blog post from my group coaching blog for coaches on why gratitude is important. In it I include three practices you can share with your team to foster more gratitude. You can read the blog post here.

Flowing from gratitude are a number of health and psychological benefits which include higher levels of optimism, increased positivity, more pro-social relationships , happier relationships, and also lower levels of toxic thoughts. As you will read, one practice which has been shown to increase gratitude and the benefits is keeping a gratitude journal, which is as simple as writing down on a weekly basis five things you are grateful for that week. 

You can read more about what science has found about the importance of gratitude and how to incorporate more of this at this link from the Center for Greater Good from the University of Berkeley.

For all our American readers, happy Thanksgiving. As a Canadian I am always appreciative that I get to celebrate Thanksgiving twice a year. Once, at our usual Canadian Thanksgiving, the 2nd Monday of October, ushering in the harvest, and then again with my American colleagues, today. 

Today is an opportunity to take down the pace, and practice gratitude. What are you grateful for?

As this article from Harvard Health Publishing writes – “In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” (source: Giving thanks can make you happier - Harvard Health)

Today is an invitation to start practicing the 3 Things Exercise, well known in positive psychology quarters as an opportunity to start the daily practice of noting (via journal) three things you are grateful for every day.

Teams365 #3245: Let’s Gear up for 2023 Work Flow

Last year around this time I published a blog post I thought would be valuable to revisit and share again…are you ready to gear up for 2023 work flow? I hope so!

It’s the middle of November and for some, it’s time to start planning for the new year! 

Here’s what I shared late last year over at the PlanDoTrack blog about six of the favorite productivity tools included in it:

Monthly Daily Planner - One of my personal favorites, the Monthly daily tracker provides a space for you to regularly review your daily steps towards key goals. There’s space for you to track movement in 11 key areas – pick some personal, pick some business, and track away. You’ll see this one in the title for this week’s post.

Content Tools especially the Daily Content Tracker – The Daily Content tracker provides you with space to note what you have added to your list. Use it to list what you have created and where you are sharing it.

Monthly Content Journal – One Line a Day. Another favorite of mine, I use this in two ways. The One Line a Day gives you space to note one line for every day of the month. I use one to note my key actions for the day and a second one to note one sentence around IDEAS I had. It’s great to go back to and look at over time.
 
Monthly Content Tracker – While you may not be creating content every day, it’s likely that you will be sharing it. The monthly content tracker can be used to help you create a link to it.

Metaview Annual Goals and Milestones – This page allows you to get a high level overview of all the goals you have ahead of you. Update it as you go, given that annual plans can shift and change, as we’ve seen in recent years.

The Month in Focus – This is an invaluable tool used as a planner and retrospective on your week. Use it on a weekly basis to track your key priorities, successes, enablers, de-railers, lessons learned and what you will do or focus on next week.

As we step into the end of the year we’re going to be revisiting some of our most popular blog posts this year, starting with revisiting Day 14 of the 22 for 2022 at the beginning of the year. Let’s do this! Here’s what I shared earlier this year - Teams365 #2937 - Virtual Co-Working Sprints 22 For 2022: Day 14 of 22 Days: Get Into Action

The pace of change today is faster than ever before. Getting comfortable with taking focused action, without all the details is a part of success in the virtual space.
 
When starting, or launching, new initiatives it can be valuable to just get into action. It’s easy and can be alluring, to spend time doing more research. I continue to meet a lot of coaches who fail to move into the execution stage because they are just not “sure”. They need to do a “bit more research”. The more data we have, the easier it may be to slip into “analysis/paralysis”. This can be a place of overwhelm or “STUCK” for many business owners. There usually is a place where you have “enough” information and can get started.
 
The tagline for the Coaching Business Builder, and PlanDoTrack, is
“Consistent Action + Daily Steps = Momentum” Key to business success is to Get into Action!
 
As Nike says, “Just do it”.
 
Consistent action is key for building business in today’s ever-changing world. We often do not know what’s going to have an impact until we get it out into the world. This is even more true in the virtual space. It’s through trying things out, and getting feedback, that we start to get the feedback required as to if we are on the mark, or not.
 
Even in creating group coaching processes, it’s key to get things into action, rather than fall into the analysis-paralysis trap.  We don’t need to know everything or even anything. We need to trust our clients. Things will change right up to the moment we meet our clients.
 
So, how much mental energy are you spending in trying to figure out what your clients really want? Holding ideas and thoughts in our heads takes up a lot of space. How much mental energy are you spending just thinking about things, considering best and worst-case scenarios without getting into action?
 
Activity
Think about the most important priorities for your business. What needs to get done?
What are you doing to create opportunities for action and feedback with your ideal clients? What events can you host to start the dialogue with them?
What are the regular action steps which will help you get things done?
 
 Conversation Sparkers
What is the consistent action you want to take daily in your business?
Who can support you in determining when “enough is enough” and you need action?
