Be sure to check out the podcast on your favorite player or here.

Why is mindset important? In today’s complex, and ever-changing context mindset is critical. It’s important to be intentional with what we want to create in our work.

TEAMS365 #2476 – Weekly Journaling Prompt 120

Picture
This week’s Weekly Journaling Prompt invites you to dive into the waters around your current opportunities and challenges and consider the question – To Go Deeper Means….

What are the layers below the surface? What are the things that are under the waterline?

In my writing, PlanDoTrack, I include exercises for virtual and remote professionals to go below the waterline of the visible results we see. Living below the surface of our actions reside elements including:
  • Values
  • Beliefs
  • Assumptions
  • Perspectives
  • Habits
  • Mindset

What do you notice about each of these? How are these influencing you, directly and indirectly?

Enjoy your writing this weekend!

TEAMS365 #2571 – Effective Virtual Conversations Tip 170 – Mirror Neurons

10/5/2020

Picture
Welcome back to another Monday Effective Virtual Conversation. This week’s tip is all about Mirror Neurons, neurons which have been found to “mirror” those we are in conversation with. This is also related to the concept of synchrony, which has found to create stronger bonds and cooperative behavior. Take a look at this article from Scientific American on the concept of Synchrony here.

Or for more about mirror neurons, check out Psychology Today's blog here.

As one researcher indicated, quoted by Joshua Freeman, “Mirror neurons seem to be a bridge between our thinking, feeling and actions – and between people.”

In times of social distancing, cultivating connection is critical for conversation.

As a facilitator or leader, what is it that your behaviors and conversations are activating? If we do start to “mimic” those we are in conversation with, is this an important lever we can be leaning into to support change?

This week, consider what’s going to support you as a team? What’s the environment you want to create? What are the behaviors you want mirrored? What are you surrounding yourself with?

Enjoy the conversation,
Jennifer

TEAMS365 #2455 – Saturday’s Weekly Journaling Prompt 117

Picture
This week’s Thursday Team Building Tip got you to explore the question “What’s getting in the way”. Today’s Weekly Journaling Prompt is all about the question “Another way to look at this is….”.

Reframing and shifting perspectives are key to success in turbulent and ever-changing environments.

Consider your biggest challenge right now – What’s another way to look at it?
To get inspiration around different ways to work with perspectives, consider adopting a methodology like DeBono’s Six Thinking Hats. You can read more about this process here.

What’s possible by shifting your perspective?

Enjoy your reflections!

“I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do”. -- Leonardo da Vinci

This week’s Weekly Journaling Prompt gets you to think about the question “It’s easy for me to….”. What is easy for you to do?

Or perhaps it is a different question. Consider these “It’s easy for me to…”..BE….THINK…Consider…DREAM…SPEAK….GROW

Enjoy your reflection this week – have a great Saturday!

TEAMS365 #2404 – Team Building Tip 256: Where Do You Want to Get More Grounded?

7/30/2020

Picture
This week’s Weekly Team Building Tip gets you to think about the question: “Where do you want to get more grounded?”. 2020 has been characterized by uncertainty, massive changes and a lot of disruption. What can be really important in these moments is being grounded. Like a piece of bamboo or a flexible pole, while the outward edges may need to flex, our grounding can help keep us anchored.

Getting grounded may involve several different practices. It might entail:
  • Focusing on our routines.
  • Taking time each day to reflect on what’s working, and what’s not.
  • Reflecting on what things to keep and what things to adjust or iterate. As a team this may involve: Regular conversations about priorities, collaboration and also what to say no to.
  • Practices like meditation, or mindfulness techniques where you become more aware of regular activities.
  • When working remotely or as a distributed team, focusing in on your practices.

What are the things you want to do to get more grounded? To stay grounded?

Please share with us your favorite resources in the comments below!

Best,
Jennifer

TEAMS365 #2384 – Flashback Friday: Teamwork Skills in Complexity – Curiosity

7/10/2020

Picture
Welcome back to another Friday where we are focusing on Teamwork Skills in Complexity. This week’s post is all about the skill of Curiosity. To explore it, let’s look back at Teams365 #1596.

Here’s what I wrote:

This month we are exploring what’s required to thrive in today’s ongoing world of complexity. Last week we explored listening, and today we are exploring the skill of curiosity and open-mindedness. Tomorrow, we will be turning our attention to the skill of experimentation.

Curiosity is a critical skill set for today’s ongoing change and complexity, given that many times “we do not know” or have all of the information needed to make decisions or see what is next. This could be because things are changing so fast or it could be because things are unclear on the road ahead. Being able to lead from a place of curiosity or “not knowing” can be liberating when the shift has been made.

One thing that can help us on our voyage of curiosity as a leader is questions. We can use questions to check assumptions, learn from others, and harness the wisdom that exists. Some questions that enable all team members to step into a place of curiosity are:
  • What’s possible?
  • What’s one thing we haven’t tried?
  • What else?
  • What else can you leverage?
  • What’s the worst thing that can happen?
  • What’s another option?
  • What could you do differently?

In order to cultivate curiosity within our team we can:
  • Encourage risk taking and mistakes
  • Support team members in pilots and experimentation
  • Enable learning across the silos which exist within the business
  • Expose the team to new areas regularly
  • Support a growth mindset

What can you do as a team to cultivate curiosity?

Enjoy the conversation!

TEAMS365 #2377 – Flashback Friday: Teamwork in Complexity – Experimentation

7/3/2020

Picture
This week we take a look back at a post which is probably even more relevant today than it was when I wrote it back in 2017 – Teamwork in Complexity.

What are you noticing about how teamwork is changing in your work in 2020?

What role does experimentation play in helping you be successful?

Take a look at this post:

This month we are exploring the skills required in teamwork, including listening and curiosity. Today I wanted to take a dive into a third skill area, that being the area of experimentation.

Experimentation is key for business leaders and teams today. Many times, the context is changing so quickly that we don’t have time to complete an entire roll-out before having to make a final decision. That can lead to a mindset of experimentation, where it is encouraged to try things out, see what works and what doesn’t.

In supporting experimentation in our team we want to:
  • Encourage and reward trial and error
  • Create safety around not getting “things right”
  • Provide team members with time and resources to experiment, beyond their everyday team responsibilities
  • Facilitate an evaluation of projects or “Experiments” that are completed or are even at the midpoint

Questions we may ask at project reviews include:
  • What’s working?
  • What’s not?
  • What are the things that need to be abandoned or tweaked?
  • What additional resources do we need?
  • What unknown obstacles have become visible?
  • What is the big learning we are taking?
  • What is the one thing/ or the many things we are going to do differently going forward?
  • Who else can we learn from (including our own past projects)?

Enjoy the conversations!

TEAMS365 #2371 – Weekly Journaling Prompt 106

6/27/2020

Picture
Welcome back to the 106th Weekly Journaling Prompt. This week’s prompt is “I appreciate”. What do you appreciate and are grateful for? As I have written in the past, gratitude plays an important role I health and well being.

As I shared in Teams365 #331:

Flowing from gratitude are a number of health and psychological benefits which include higher levels of optimism, increased positivity, more pro-social relationships, happier relationships, and also lower levels of toxic thoughts. As you will read, one practice which has been shown to increase gratitude and the benefits is keeping a gratitude journal, which is as simple as writing down on a weekly basis five things you are grateful for that week.

You can read more about what science has found about the importance of gratitude and how to incorporate more of this at this link from the Center for Greater Good from the University of Berkeley.

What are the things you are grateful for? What would it be like to keep a list of what you are grateful for on a regular basis, even if it’s as simple as listing out the top 3 things you are grateful for?

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
