Here are two great quotes I love around decluttering:
- Clutter is not just physical stuff. It's old ideas, toxic relationships, and bad habits. Clutter is anything that does not support your better self." - Eleanor Brownn
- "The first step in crafting the life you want is to get rid of everything you don't." - Joshua Becker
An area I often focus on each January is decluttering.
For now, here are 24 items you might want to consider decluttering:
- Old mail and flyers
- Expired medications
- File old 2023 receipts (don’t throw away – each location has different time to keep things for record – i.e. many are 7 years)
- File old 2023 invoices
- Tackle your bookcase – what are 3 books which could be passed on to someone else?
- What book do you want to read this month? – take it out and put it by your bed and/or office so it’s visible
- Check the printer area – what can be moved, cleared, or refilled?
- Check your filing cabinet
- Clear the office fridge
- Check cupboards for expired products
- Depending on your business, are there older office supplies which can be sorted, pared etc?
- Any extra furniture that could be re-sold or donated?
- Any old newspapers or magazines that need a recylcle
- Go through a filing cabinet – what are some files which could be archived?
- Tackle any paperwork on the desk – Consider using Helen Buttigieg’s RAFT tool to sort – What needs to be read? Actioned? Read? Tossed?
- Head to your closet for coats, hats, mittens and scarves. Is everything in good working order? Anything to be donated?
- Office luncheon supplies – i.e containers, water bottles. Many people have a new year’s resolution of eating out less and cooking more for themselves. What is your set up like? Are things coordinated?
- Work shoes and boots – any need for repair, cleaning or handing over?
- Post it notes – I’ve heard from many other business owners how plentiful post it notes are for others. What is your supply looking like
- Toiletries
- Cleaning supplies
- Work Fridge items – is it time for a cleanout or restock?
- The desk drawer – when was the last time you took everything out and sorted through this drawer?
- Clothes closet – pick a spot – what haven’t you worn in the last year and could benefit from having a new home? Consider turning your hangars around to see what you do and dno’t wear – turning it when you do wear it.
Most decluttering experts recommend chunking things down, so doing 15 minutes a day on a consistent basis – What do you want to do today?
