I’m not sure where 2022 went. At times it was slow, at times so fast. A big thank you for stopping by and visiting us here. It’s been another year of daily blog posts, something which has really become part of my weekly routine. 

A big thank you needs to go out to Honey Eduque, my VA, who kept the blog posts going throughout this year in terms of creating the wonderful graphics and scheduling them for me, each and every week.

As we go to wrap up our 8th year here at the blog I’ve been torn with whether to keep this going or not as a daily blog. It’s become such a part of my process that we’re going to keep going. 

I look forward to continuing the flow of conversation into 2023, and want to wish you a fantastic year end. However you celebrate my hope is that the New Year will usher in peace, and hope and lots of good things for you and your loved ones.

Teams365 #3283: Questions to Take Stock of the Year

I thought I would reach back today to Teams#1091 where I included a great series of questions to use to take stock of the year. They are still as relevant today as they were then:

Today's post gets you to start turning your attention to some stock taking of this past year. We've got a little less than a week left in the year, and between the parties, and presents, and eating, and resting, it can be a great time to take stock of the year. Here at the Teams365 blog this year we've focused on a range of topic areas including Virtual Facilitation, Global Leadership, New Leadership tips, Exercises to undertake with your team. I also did a couple of series including the Foundations of Feedback, the Foundations of Teamwork, and the Foundations of Goals. I'm sure you've pick up our bias here at Potentials Realized that success in today's business context is so dependent on Results, Relationships as well as Learning.

I hope that you will grab 15 minutes today or this week to reflection these 10 questions to help you take stock of the past year. I'll be following up in a few days with ten more questions to support you in creating your vision for the New Year.

Here are ten questions to support you in taking a look back at the last year

  2. What are you most proud of accomplishing? OR What were your greatest results?
  3. What habits have most supported you this year?
  4. What three adjectives sum up the year for you?

  7. If you were to give this year a book title, what would it be?
  8. What do you want to make sure you keep doing in the New Year?

As we go to wrap up our 2022 blog posts here at Potentials Realized and the Teams365 blog I would be remiss if I didn’t share with you 10 of my favorites from this year.

Here’s a collection – one from every month – Tuesday’s blog post focused on the first six month, today’s focus on the last six months of the year.

July – In July I was exploring Chapters 17 and 18 of my book, Reconnecting Workspaces. One of my favorite posts was the BRAIN Tip from Chapter 17 entitled “The myth of multi-tasking, and dopamine”. As the workspace continues to evolve, what are you doing to work with your natural flow, and how the brain is wired? Here’s a link to that post:

Teams365 #3281: Making Time in Your Schedule for 2023 Routines

Routines and Habits are an important part of business success in any workspace. What habits and routines do you want to embed in 2023?

I thought it would be valuable to do an excerpt today from the 90-Day Guide for Success around Habits. Here’s what I wrote on Day 40 of the 90-Day Guide for Success:

The big things that come our way are . . . 
the fruit of seeds planted in the daily routine of our work.”

WHAT?
Routines are an important part of maintaining consistency. Be intentional with the routines you want to set. These might include getting to work at a certain time of day, being sure to switch off by a certain time of day, leaving your desk for lunch to participate in a workout, scheduling in two out-of-office networking events each month, and/or earmarking time each season to participate in a 
learning event (internal to your business, industry wide, or MOOC—massive open online course).

What routines are important for you to establish early on?

Stability and flow can be created for many in the hybrid and remote space via:
  • Practices
  • Habits
  • Routines

SO WHAT?
Practices

Practices provide anchors for us in terms of getting things out and into the space of conversation. A practice may be a meeting, a focus, or a connection with people you enjoy. What is the purpose of your work right now?

To create something. Could you put on your calendar an event which you host every week or month? 

What would it take to create that item on a regular basis? What could you create over the course of a month or year?

To connect people. Host a meeting at a consistent time weekly or monthly. Put it out in the calendar before the end of the year to make sure that it works.

To equip people. What are the different strategies which will help people?
What practices do you want to create?

Habits
As James Clear writes, “Habit formation is the process by which a behavior becomes progressively more automatic through repetition.”71 Habits are useful in that they may free up more thinking space for creative thought and problem solving. Think about the habit of driving. When you first started driving, likely all your thought needed to be dedicated to that. As it became more automatic and a habit, chances are that your brain now goes on autopilot while you drive and think. Have you ever found yourself at a location, not quite knowing how you got there?

Hebb’s law asserts that “Neurons that fire together wire together”; in other words, things that we do consistently become a habit.

What habits are going to help you thrive?

Routines
What are the routines? Routines are essential for remote workers. They help us stay grounded in a context that may be very fluid.
Write out the activities you undertake on a consistent basis. Maybe they include:
  • Going into the office once a week—what’s the learning here?
  • Getting to the gym 4–5 days a week—what’s the value?

Routines can create a workflow that keeps us at peak. It is important to consider elements like what creates flow for you, and how you are balancing time on and time.

Teams365 #3280: – A Look Back at 2022 Posts Here at the Teams365 Blog - Part 1

As we get towards the end of the year, and year 8 of daily blog posts here at the Teams365 blog, I thought it would be beneficial to look back at the last year and some of my favorite posts. This year many workspaces made the transition from all remote to hybrid and even full-time back to in-office events. I spent time sharing parts of my book, Reconnecting Workspaces, as well as the 90-Day Guide for Success.

Fun Fact: Many leaders are using the 90-Day Guide for Success with their teams as part of team meetings, or are assigning team members with weekly readings and assignment. The book was written to support teams and individual contributors with a focus on 90 key areas for business success.

Teams365 #3276: Friday Flashback– Hybrid Working – The Next Iteration of the Workspace?

As we look back at 2022 it certainly was a year of the hybrid. I thought it would be interesting to reach back and see what I had shared about hybrid working last year and here’s one of my first posts around my prediction that hybrid was going to be our next workspace iteration. It comes from March 16 2021. Here’s what I wrote:

As some locations start to get their populations vaccinated, workplaces may be reopening in the not so distant future. In some cases, some organizations will go back to work, in other cases they may become hybrid, with some people in the office, and others working from home.

The hybrid workspace can be even more challenging in terms of support, than the all in-person realm, or all remote workspace.

Having worked in the hybrid world for many years, here at Potentials Realized, we will be widening our program support for teams, as well as consulting services for organizations to more explicitly support hybrid working arrangements and teams. We feel that this is an important part of the next phase of work and economics.

Here are some interesting pieces of recent research about the hybrid workspace:

“Among the challenges of managing a hybrid workforce, 30% of business leaders are most concerned with maintaining corporate culture. Thirteen percent of respondents reported concern over creating parity between the remote and in-office experience; 13% also are concerned about providing a seamless employee experience.” – Gartner Study, June 2020

“Output driven metrics” along with “Regular meetings to touch base, say once a day at a set time can set the expectation and answer any questions that need answering. From there, it’s a matter of trusting your team to get the job done and making adjustments as necessary.”
 
A November 2020 study noted, “More than 20 percent of the workforce could work remotely three to five days a week as effectively as they could if working from an office. If remote work took hold at that level, that would mean three to four times as many people working from home than before the pandemic”.

Smartway2 study found  that 92 percent of people surveyed in fall 2020 wanted to return to the office. They would prefer one of the following:
  • to work mostly from home with occasional office time (40%)
  • to share their time equally between home and office (31%)
  • to work mostly at the office with occasional time at home (21%)

Last year I created the Hybrid Work Styles Quiz, a 2 minute quiz for team members to take to learn more about their unique work style. Our work style influences HOW we like to connect, what we prioritize, how we like to work, our communication and also our stressors.

Whether we are part of a team or support teams, helping others understand their unique style helps us with better teamwork.

As I share in TEDx talk, teams which excel are diverse. They have different working styles. One of the first steps to working better across differences is to understand yours.
