Teams365 #3213: Flashback Friday – Four Foundations of Any Coaching Conversation

Many different activities get labeled coaching in today’ environment. Today’s post shares four foundations of the coaching approach. Whether we are coaching others as leaders, or work an external or internal coach, these four foundations ground the variety of approaches which fall in the category of coaching.

1. Accountability – accountability is at the core of any coaching process. Coaching is not just about having a conversation, it is about taking action. Coaching is an approach where the person being coached is responsible for taking action. Accountability in coaching does not mean telling someone what to do.  If the person being coached, does not want to be in the driver seat than coaching as a modality is probably not the right fit or solution for that conversation.

2. Goals – Coaching is about getting results. Each coaching conversation will focus on a goal – articulated or not. Perhaps someone wants to become a better public speaker or more effective at managing their range of emotions at work. In coaching, it can be good practice to start the conversation by asking what the goals are for the coaching conversation. You’ll want to also connect these goals with the goals in the bigger picture. Finally, best practice is to wrap up by asking how did we do on our goals today?

3. Coaching is not about fixing. There often is a misperception that coaching is to “fix people’ or a remedial approach. In fact, the coaching philosophy is grounded in the ability of each person being coached as being resourceful (able to effect change), and creative (able to come up with their own solutions). The role of the coach is to help the person being coached discover these answers or connect with others who can help them do that. Most coaching models are grounded in an appreciative standpoint.

4.  Coaching is not a one off conversation. Coaching is not about a one-off conversation. If supports a process of change which takes place over time. The ability for the coach (internal, eternal or leader) to circle back and check in is critical.

While there can be many different models of coaching, and different contests (i.e. individual coaching, team coaching, group coaching) most all are rounded in these coaching philosophies. Team365 #3209: Coaching In Focus- 5 Reasons Why Now Is the Time to Equip Everyone with These Skills

For more than a decade I’ve spent a significant amount of time talking about coaching to leaders, organizations and coaches themselves. Having written the world’s first book on group coaching more than a decade ago, I am a passionate believer that coaching is a critical modality for capacity building. Whether we are introducing coaching skills so leaders can have better 1-1 conversations, or teams can acquire clarity around what’s important to them, or groups can come together for collaborative conversations, coaching skills are critical in a world that is ever-changing, complex and diverse.

Here are five reasons why coaching is more important today than even a few years ago:

Part of the return to office allows for all individuals to connect and collaborate in different ways than we can in the virtual space. As a virtual advocate for many decades (and author in this space as well!) virtual collaboration can never replace what can occur in the in-person realm. Enhancing virtual collaboration skills is still important when teams can organizations can’t get together. Coaching skills are critical in the collaborative conversation space, with everyone needing enhanced listening and questioning skills. 

Collaboration requires activating different perspectives. Coaching is a valuable modality for staring to explore the varying perspectives and solutions around issues.

Coaching allows for us to explore below the waterline into the arenas which are not visible but play out in the workspace. This includes what I first shared in PlanDoTrack and Coaching Business Builder as the ICEBERG Model

When we dive into the deeper waters of the iceberg we can explore topics like mindsets, beliefs, and values in a safe space.

In recent years many organizations have experienced several paradigm shifts, including significant changes in leadership and how all employees need to contribute and play a key role in outstanding organizations. Quiet Quitting has become the norm in many organizations which aren’t meeting the diverse needs of employees. Coaching is an important modality, especially when group and peer coaching is activated, to involve everyone in the conversations shaping where an organization is going, and what’s needed now to help everyone excel and activate their best self.

Finally, complexity is the norm rather than the outlier today. In times of complexity business is not as usual. Coaching is a valuable vehicle to activate all wisdom from across a team, group or organization.

Teams365 #3195: Coaching In Focus- 4 Different Approaches to Coaching in Today’s Evolving Workspace

This fall we are returning to the basics here at the Teams365 blog, supporting professionals at all levels and experience to go back to the basics.
One of the skill sets which continues to grow in importance in the evolving workspace – whether you are working back in-person, virtually or in hybrid world is that of coaching.

What is coaching?

The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as: “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.”

Coaching can look very different across the spectrum of one-on-one coaching when a leader or external or internal coach sits down with their team member and takes a deep dive into the areas they would like to explore.
Peer coaching, where peers come together to share their experiences, and help others expand their awareness perspectives, and options, by listening and asking great questions is also an increasingly important modality.

The area of coaching I have been very involved with for close to two decades now is group and team coaching (having written the world’s first book on Group coaching – Effective Group Coaching back in 2009.

In group coaching we are bringing together people with a shared and common interest. Group size can range from 4 – 15, with the smaller the group providing more connection, trust and intimacy. Group coaching groups, or circles, are hosted by a coach who supports the group by providing a process focus around the topics the group wants to explore. Part conveyor, part coach, the group coaches role is to provide the space for accountability around the group member’s goals (which often are individual goals, and sometimes collective goals), as well as holding the space for the experience to provide new awareness and action towards what’s important.

In team coaching we are coaching an entire team, whether it’s an intact team, matrix team, or project team. The leader is a key part of the conversation and is instrumental in ensuring that what is explored in coaching gets put into practice by the team. In team coaching, we are often coaching the team systemically, so focusing on their own alignment as well as connections with their wider ecosystem.
