Teams365 #3281: Making Time in Your Schedule for 2023 Routines

12/28/2022

Picture
Routines and Habits are an important part of business success in any workspace. What habits and routines do you want to embed in 2023?

I thought it would be valuable to do an excerpt today from the 90-Day Guide for Success around Habits. Here’s what I wrote on Day 40 of the 90-Day Guide for Success:

The big things that come our way are . . .
the fruit of seeds planted in the daily routine of our work.”
—William Feather

WHAT?
Routines are an important part of maintaining consistency. Be intentional with the routines you want to set. These might include getting to work at a certain time of day, being sure to switch off by a certain time of day, leaving your desk for lunch to participate in a workout, scheduling in two out-of-office networking events each month, and/or earmarking time each season to participate in a
learning event (internal to your business, industry wide, or MOOC—massive open online course).

What routines are important for you to establish early on?

Stability and flow can be created for many in the hybrid and remote space via:
  • Practices
  • Habits
  • Routines

Where to Go
Here are more resources regarding practices, habits, and routines.
  • Practices: Check out KPMG’s online article, “Leading Practices for Remote Working: How to Navigate the Current Environment,”
  • Habits: Check out Charles Duhigg’s the Power of Habits, James Clear’s Atomic Habits, and BJ Fogg’s Tiny Habits.
  • Routines: Check out Amanda Cross’s blog post, “21 Ways to Switch Up Your Remote Work Routine,”

SO WHAT?
Practices

Practices provide anchors for us in terms of getting things out and into the space of conversation. A practice may be a meeting, a focus, or a connection with people you enjoy. What is the purpose of your work right now?

To create something. Could you put on your calendar an event which you host every week or month?

What would it take to create that item on a regular basis? What could you create over the course of a month or year?

To connect people. Host a meeting at a consistent time weekly or monthly. Put it out in the calendar before the end of the year to make sure that it works.

To equip people. What are the different strategies which will help people?
What practices do you want to create?

Habits
As James Clear writes, “Habit formation is the process by which a behavior becomes progressively more automatic through repetition.”71 Habits are useful in that they may free up more thinking space for creative thought and problem solving. Think about the habit of driving. When you first started driving, likely all your thought needed to be dedicated to that. As it became more automatic and a habit, chances are that your brain now goes on autopilot while you drive and think. Have you ever found yourself at a location, not quite knowing how you got there?

Hebb’s law asserts that “Neurons that fire together wire together”; in other words, things that we do consistently become a habit.

What habits are going to help you thrive?

Routines
What are the routines? Routines are essential for remote workers. They help us stay grounded in a context that may be very fluid.
Write out the activities you undertake on a consistent basis. Maybe they include:
  • Going into the office once a week—what’s the learning here?
  • Getting to the gym 4–5 days a week—what’s the value?

Routines can create a workflow that keeps us at peak. It is important to consider elements like what creates flow for you, and how you are balancing time on and time.

What are the routines you want to adopt in 2023?

Enjoy the reflection,
Jennifer

Teams365 #3173: Weekly Video – Routines, Habits and Practices

9/12/2022

Picture
With last week being “back to work” in office and from anywhere for so many, we thought it would be fitting to focus on Routines, Habits and Practices.

As I shared last week at the Coaching Biz Growth Lab, routines and habits free up space for us to do things more automatically. This then provides more cognitive space to focus on other things that matter.

Consider what routines you are creating this fall. Maybe it’s taking 30 minutes to get out of the office at lunch to get some exercise (good for the brain) and to create some thinking space. Maybe a routine is starting early so you can leave early. What’s the routine you want to develop this year?

Habits are things you do automatically. One of my habits here (up at the condo) is to get to the gym first thing every day I am here. After 9 months is automatic and everyone around me knows just where to find me.

A reminder that it takes about 60 plus days to develop a habit, until it becomes automatic. Take a look at this short video which brings to live Day 40 of the 90-Day Guide for Success. Pick up a copy of the guide at Amazon.

What are the habits you want to start building this fall?

Enjoy the conversation,
Jennifer

Teams365 #3171:  Weekly Jounraling Prompt – What routines do I want to create?

9/10/2022

Picture
As we wrap up the first week of September, it’s often seen the first week of the back to work routines. Consider what role routines can play with you around performance and well-being.

This weekend’s prompt is “What routines do you want to create?’. You might consider work routines and well-being routines.

Questions to also consider:
What routines am I starting to create directly/indirectly?
What’s important to leave time for?
What do I need to prioritize?
What can be let go of?

Enjoy the conversation,
Jennifer

Teams365 #3155: Getting Back to Fall Routines

8/25/2022

Picture
As we step into the swing of fall “back to work” for so many in a few weeks, it’s time to think a little bit about routines, and habits.

Whether you are back to the office, working remotely or hybrid, routines and habits create an opportunity for flow and ease.

More and more attention has been placed on the notion of habits and routines. Some of my favorite books on these topics include

The Power of Habit – Charles Duhigg
Tiny Habits – BJ Fogg
Atomic Habits – James Clear

The workspace today can be demanding, which often requires we become more intentional with what we want to create. Boundary issues, (or lack thereof) has led to overwork, burnout, and even compassion fatigue. What boundaries are important to create around your work and life this fall?

In order to create the automaticity of flow, it can be valuable to start establishing routines at a key point. Whether you choose the day after Labor Day (or some other), it can serve as a reset.

Consider these reset opportunities to working differently:

Getting into, and out of the office, at an established time of day. Boundaries in work times can provide an opportunity for more focus.

Getting more exercise --- with fall comes new work locations and new activities. What would you like to establish as a workout routine. Is it getting to the gym at lunch, or before work? Is it dusting off the treadmill or running shoes you have and getting out?

Intentionally building in time to re-establish relationships – Many professional associations are back to regular in-person programming this fall. What time have you earmarked to meet, and reconnect, with others inside and outside of your organization?

Time with family or the people that matter most – It is easy to have work take center stage. What are you doing to build in time to connect with family and/or those that matter most? As the old age says, “What doesn’t get scheduled, doesn’t get done”. Who is important to spend time with this fall? What time won’t you get back?

What else is important to consider as you think about your back to fall routines?

Enjoy,
Jennifer

#teams365 #3091 Remote Pathways, Routines and Rhythms

6/22/2022

Picture
As part of our shift into the summer season I thought it would be interesting to take a look back at some of the many posts I’ve written in this 3100 adventure! Here’s a post from last year which will be of interest to those who are considering their hybrid work rhythms and practices.  This post was originally published as: Routine Check – Remote Working Rhythms - PlanDoTrack
My Remote Pathways podcast co-host (link to RemotePathways.com/podcast) has a great phrase – Remote working rhythms – which I had to borrow for this week’s blog post. This week we pause to check in around your routines with remote work. What are the routines you have established in your work?
Questions to consider:

  • Do you start work every day at a consistent time?
  • End work at a consistent time?
  • Get out (outside or out of the office) to fit some workouts or exercises?
  • What do you do to expand your remote work rhythms?
  • Possible remote working routines you could undertake:
  • Having a fixed start and end time
  • Participating in a regular co-working session with other professionals (similar to what I did with the 21 for 21 Virtual Co-working Sprints. Returning again in Q2.
  • Tackling certain tasks at a specific time or day
  • Earmarking a specific window for a certain task
Routines are important as they start to build out habits. As I have shared in past posts, habits can become automatic in terms of acting like a switch to get things done.
What are the routines or habits you want to undertake?

Warm regards,

Jennifer

Teams365 #2867 - 5 Productivity Tips To Support You As You Get Back To (Virtual) Work Routines

11/5/2021

Picture
Getting things done is at the heart of exceptional work in the hybrid space. Today’s blog post explores five key tips for productivity in the virtual space. While these will all be familiar to you, what is a good reminder for you this week?

#1 – Put A Frame Around It
. As I shared in one of yesterday’s “Back to (Virtual) Work” Posts, Parkinson’s rule asserts that tasks expand to the amount of time we give them. It can be useful to “put a frame around” bigger projects by putting a framework around the start and end. What are those tasks you want to frame out?

#2 – Related To The First Area Is That Of Boundaries. Framing things out can also relate to boundaries. What are the boundaries you want to put in place? Boundaries can include having:
  • Physical space earmarked for
  • Boundaries around when you are on, and when you are off
  • Boundaries around task time

What boundaries will help you focus?

#3 – Creating time for sprints. Getting things done in faster, deeper dive can be a different way of working. About 5 years ago, I started experimenting with using “sprints” in program design. I take professionals through a 45-minute series of reflective prompts, helping guide them into focus. What are the sprints you want to create around your work?

#4 – Think about meal preparation and batching cooking. It’s likely that your food prep and planning is much more organized than it was this time last year, but perhaps not. Spending time every week to not only plan, and shop, but also prepare, can make a big difference, freeing up valuable time. What are the kitchen implements you have, but haven’t used? This might be an Instant Pot or Slow Cooker. What can you do to incorporate one or two more set-it-and-forget-it meals? One of my favorite video sites is the Seven Sisters….Many of their creations are things we already have in the pantry and freezer.

#5 – Think about creating something different in your routine. Our brains crave, and remember, things that are NOVEL, DIFFERENT or SURPRISING. On a regular basis, what can you do to get out of your routine? Maybe it’s attending a call which helps you think about things in a different way. Maybe it’s about shaking up your routine (moving your workout to a different time of day). Maybe it’s about working from a different location. What can you to do jazz up your routine?

Best,
Jennifer

Teams365 #2783 - Flashback to Rhythms, Routines and Results

A few weeks ago, as part of the Reconnecting Workspaces Training, we discussed the importance of routines in establishing rhythms around remote work. Personally, I find my routines are a significant part of my own business results.

Here’s a link to a post I shared earlier this year over at the PlanDoTrack blog: www.plandotrack.com/blog/routine-check-remote-working-rhythms
