Teams365 #2769 - Friday Flashback – Review of the 3 Week Series Highlight

In this week’s Friday Flashback, I am reaching back to a 2015 post at the Teams365 blog Teams365 #377: Five Ways to Harness the Best of Your Team - https://www.potentialsrealized.com/teams-365-blog/teams365-366-five-ways-to-harness-the-best-of-your-team

For the last year (2014-2015) here at the Teams365 blog I took a look at what makes teams exceptional. We explored in depth the six factors of high performing teams which include:

1. Shared purpose or mission (Your WHY)
2. Shared behavioral norms (How you do things? What is acceptable and unacceptable on the team)
3. Shared commitment (What are team members committed to?)
4. Shared performance goals (How are people measured? How do your goals align? Overlap?)
5. Shared team practices (Teams that work together effectively share common practices such as a Monday morning huddle, a Thursday night out or some other regular event).
6. Clear Roles (How our roles overlap, align and connect).

What can you do this year to harness the best of your team? What practices, such as Monday morning huddles, or more time out of the office working on projects, will bring the team together and boost not only results but the relationships that exist?

Five practical things you can do to harness the best in your team is:
  1.  Clarify expectations - Make sure everyone is on the same page and that the six factors when rated area at an8 or 9 out of 10 with everyone. Read two past  posts on clarifying expectations (Teams365 #134 and #239 - Trust Builder #6)
  2. Get to know your team members, and have them get to know each other. Business is done through relationships. What are people’s strengths? Preferences? Real talents? What special projects could they lead this year? Assessments such as the Everything DISC opens up dialogue and creates common language for exploring differences.
  3. Dedicate time to team focus - Great teams don’t just happen. They evolve through focus, practice and working together. We need to dedicate time to making a team work well together, not just expect it to happen by itself.
  4. Dedicate time to regular 1-1s. These should not just happen around performance review time, but every week, if not every day! Read this blog post for some questions to incorporate into those conversations. Read what I've written on 1-1s in the past.
  5. Create shared success measures and revisit these regularly. Together create a vision of success and revisit these regularly.  Schedule them in and be ruthless in scheduling that meeting.

The science of exceptional teamwork, and the research behind great remote and hybrid work continues to evolve. In today’s Brain Tip, I wanted to share with you Chapter 3’s brain tip. Here’s what I wrote in Reconnecting Workspaces:

BRAIN TIP: THE SCIENCE BEHIND TEAMS--
OXYTOCIN (BONDING) AND SOCIAL CONTAGION

There is an increasing focus on the science behind team work. There are both scientific factors as well as other elements which help teams thrive, including these neuroscience elements:

Emotional Contagion: Emotional contagion brings to life the notion that “one rotten apple spoils the bunch.” Research continues to demonstrate how our emotions, particularly as leaders, spread to those around us. What do you notice about the tone of the team?

Oxytocin: A second element which has been seen in high performing teams is a higher rate of oxytocin, also known as the bonding element. Within in-person environments it can be stimulated through touch, like high-fives and physical team huddles. Virtually it is stimulated by:

• Virtual high fives or, as a participant in a recent meeting I spoke at demonstrated, a Butterfly Hug!

• Bonding and feeling connected in the remote space is critical, especially when physical distancing measures are in effect. What can you do to get people bonding?

The Knot is the icon for Chapter 3 of Reconnecting Workspaces, which covers the topic of Team Effectiveness.

Just like a knot, teams are as strong as their connections. Great teams are seamless in that they are able to focus on how they connect and what’s next.

In a hybrid and remote space, teams can appear to be seamless, when team members are connected in and are clear on their focus, mission, vision and how they do things.

This week’s Friday flashback takes us into the realm of communication, clarity and bullet points. Let’s take a look back at Teams365 #1842: https://www.potentialsrealized.com/teams-365-blog/teams365-1842-productivity-tip-10-support-action-with-3-bullet-points

#10 – Support Action and Clarity with 3 Bullet Points

Communicating in business is usually about creating clarity so that people can take action. If our message is lost in transmission, we may have lost an opportunity to support change, missed a sale, or weakened a relationship.
Brevity is key to effective presentations and business communication. It helps us stand out and helps our message be memorable.

The latency and recency effects assert that we remember the start and the end of things. What are the key messages that you want people to remember? Keeping the latency and recency effect in mind, it is best to include the main points at the start and reinforce these again at the end.

Starting and wrapping up your presentation with 3 bullet points can be an effective way to boost retention of your message.

Rather than going into a long description, boil it down to 3 bullet points.

Activity:
Think about your upcoming presentations or marketing messages. What are the key points you want to communicate? What do you want to get across?
Think about the presentation. Write out the three bullet points you want people to remember. 
Now think about the audience. What is important to them? What action do you want them to take? 
Now rewrite your three bullet points. 
As you think about the overarching arc of the presentation, what can you do to reinforce these three bullet points at the start of the presentation, and at the end?
Insert it now!

The 3-bullet point tip is also useful beyond communication, in light of overall productivity. Simpler is better. It helps us focus. As it applies to time management, at the start of the day identify what are the 3 core items that MUST GET Done. If all else fails, what are those 3 things?

  • What are the three bullet points?
