As someone who has spent many years supporting teams (intact and virtual) through a number of assessments, one that I am proud to offer is the Everything DiSC. It provides teams of all kinds insights about people’s preferences and how they approach their work. Our styles impact how we communicate (are you more detail focused or big picture), how we approach conflict (do you prompt conflict or act as the diplomat of the team), and how we work. Our styles become more pronounced in times of urgency, change and stress (a common occurrence).

It can be very useful to help teams of all kinds, including virtual teams, understand their styles. Whether you do opt to use an Everything Disc, or you use an MBTI or other assessment, what is often most important is the discussion which ensues.

Here’s a quick activity you might want to undertake with your team which could help team members expand their thinking about styles.

Time: 20-30 minutes

Materials needed: A slide with icons which team members can speak to.

Pre-preparation: Identifying what the topic is with the team and how you want to explore styles. Do you want to look at it through the lens of how you like to approach communication? Working styles? Decision Making? Conflict? Feedback? Make sure you have alignment around this.

Show the team the slide and ask the team to share what their preference is around about how they would approach the topic area.

So, if you are looking at how you make decisions, there might be a round of questions where you go round the table and hear from each person. Rounds of sharing could include each person’s response on these areas
  1. Which icon represents your natural approach to_____________ (decision making or….)
  2. Which icon represents how you would like to be supported in _______
  3. As a team, which icon represents how you think the team in general needs to approach _______
  4. At our best as a team, we would approach decisions such as __________________
  5. What was important for me about this conversation was:

Depending on the size of the team you may need to select certain questions to discuss. It can be a very powerful activity.

It's Thursday and time for another Team Building Question. Over the last two months on Thurday I've included a series of questions you may want to bring into your team conversations or events, in order to support the team in getting to know each other better. Building relationships to support results is critical for team success. Take a moment and check out my past posts on Getting To Know Your Team during April and May 2017.

Today's question gets you to think about, and be in dialogue around, the question "My work style is ____ & ______". Take a few minutes to discuss with each other what your work style is. Are you a:
Big picture person?
Details focused?
A driver of results?
Someone who wants to get it right the first time round?
Someone who likes to experiment?
A person who creates on the spot?

How would you describe your style?

How do you contribute to team results?
Teams benefit when they have complimentary styles. Notice how your team compliments each other with their styles. Are there any gaps?

Questions to consider:


Where do you need to adapt your style to meet the needs of the group?
Where do you need to hold your ground as a leader?

Keeping aligned with the theme of motivation and recognition, today's quote comes from Sam Walton, who reminds leaders to "boost the self-esteem" of their people.

Are your team members aware of their strengths? Do they know what they are capable of?

Much of the team coaching work I undertake with teams revolves around learning and acknowledging the strengths in a team, and working with the team to boost other factors which we know makes for a great team - trust, accountability etc.  It is through these sustained conversations over time (not just the one day offsite) that teams really recognize and own their strengths.

As we move into this second quarter, where could your team benefit from support? Would you and your team members benefit from undertaking the Everything DiSC, individual coaching, or some support to the entire team?

TEams 365 #33: Soliciting Feedback about Your Leadership

Getting feedback about your leadership is an important part of leadership, but often one that is overlooked, or not widely embraced.

What opportunities do you have to receive fedback about your leadership, formally and informally?

Many of us are familiar with 360s. If you don't have a formal 360 process available in your organization, you may want to consider accessing the Everything DiSC 363 Work of Leaders. You can view a sample profile here. As you will note, it's a little differerent than some other 360s including the narrative nature of the report. For those that have completed Everything DiSC work, it is also a natural fit. It also provides leaders with the next three things they can focus on.

Teams 365 #30 - What Does Each Team Member Want from you as a Leader?

 In terms of leadership, one size does not fit all team members. Each person in your team will have their own unique style.

A useful activity for team leaders (both new and seasoned)  to undertake is to consider what each team member wants, and needs, from you in terms of:
- Communication (mode, frequency, amount)
- Support - in general, and when learning new tasks
- Direction
- Feedback
- Recognition

One of the tools which I often use with new managers and leaders to gain this greater awareness is the Everything DiSC

Teams 365 #29 - How Do Styles impact your Team?

What I consider to be one of the most exciting parts of team leadership, can also be the most challenging. What this is is the diversity of personalities, and styles that exist on a team.
What is the impact of different styles in your team around:
  • how people want to be supported,
  • how conflict is managed,
  • how you need to adapt your style
  • preferences for communication (email/text/face to face)
  • the amount of information people receive when taking on a new task
  • the amount of supervision people want (daily check-ins versus a more hands-off approach)
So much of this is influenced by our style preferences.

One of the tools I use extensively with leaders, and their teams is the Everything DiSC suite of products. Whether I am working with a newly forming team, or a team who needs to work more effectively, learning more about our styles and how that intersects with others is invaluable.
