TEAMS365 #2158 – Saying Thanks!

11/27/2019

Tomorrow many readers will be celebrating Thanksgiving and it’s an important time of year to pause and say thanks. As I’ve shared in other blog posts, getting into the habit of gratitude can have multiple health impacts. There are a few articles which do a great job referencing the many benefits of gratitude including:
  • 7 Scientifically Proven Benefits of Gratitude by Amy Morin. In this article Amy references that gratitude plays a role in improving Self Esteem. A 2014 study published in Journal of Applied Sport Psychology found that gratitude “Enhanced athlete’s self-esteem”.
  • Releasing dopamine, one of the feel-good chemicals. When we undertake acts of kindness, and practice gratitude, dopamine is released. (from the Health Benefits of Gratitude: 6 Scientifically Proven Ways of Being Grateful Rewires Your Brain + Body for Health)
  • Check out Happier Human’s post on the 31 Benefits of Gratitude. It’s a great read.

What are the things you are grateful for this year?

Here are some additional questions to get you thinking about gratitude this week:
  • Who do you want to thank?
  • What do you want to share with them in terms of what their impact was?

On a personal level, I’d like to thank you for following us here at Potentials Realized. As a virtual business, I appreciate the many comments and shares you provide both virtually and with teams you work with. I’ve enjoyed the daily practice of bringing you content around teamwork and leadership. There is a treasure-trove of content here for you to dig into as we go to wrap up the 6th year of blog posts.

I look forward to continuing the conversation into 2020 – I’m working on a number of ways to help you tap into the body of work that I’ve created here since 2014.

Don’t forget to also check out the new Remote Pathways Podcast I am co-hosting with Michelle Mullins. It's just been going live this week and and focuses on connecting you to the People, Places and Pathways of today’s remote work context. We touch on tips, ideas and resources for a variety of remote workers  - from project managers, to remotepreneurs, to virtual team leaders, and those moving to a remote work space. Do check us out at RemotePathways.com.

Best,
Jennifer

TEAMS365 #2157 – Getting Prepared to Wrap Up & 2020 Vision

11/26/2019

Picture
As we arc towards the end of the year, it’s time to focus in on our 2020 vision. I’ve been enjoying hosting a number of events in the last few weeks around visioning for the new year, and new decade.

If you weren’t able to join us last week for the 2020 Vision session, please check out the recording here. You can download an associated worksheet here as well. The session will take about 30 minutes to go through.

Having a vision is important for a number of reasons. Our vision is important as it can help us to:
  • Move through the ups and downs of everyday business. It can provide an anchor when things are turbulent.
  • Stay focused and make decisions. It may make it easier to say yes to things that align with where we want to go and say no to things that are out of range.
  • Pull us forward and motivate us when things are not working well.

Today’s post also serves as an opportunity to pause and take stock of where things are at. What are the things that need attention and need to get done before the end of the year? Is there anything you haven’t yet accomplished that you do want to put attention on?

As part of today’s post, be sure to grab a pen and participate in the 2020 Vision session I facilitated last week. You will find it here on YOUTUBE. Enjoy!

Best wishes,
Jennifer

This week’s weekly journaling prompt gets you to consider the question – “I am on the path to ____”.

This is a great question to do some free-flowing writing around. Questions you may want to think about as you write today include:
  • What’s shifted for you this year?
  • Where have your adventures taken you this year?
  • What are the new skills you are learning? What doors are they opening?
  • What are the new experiences you are having? How are those shaping you?

Enjoy the reflections!

As a reminder, I’ve pulled together a quarterly workbook with 12 weeks of journaling prompts you can pick up at the Potentials Realized store. It’s only $7 so a great stocking stuffer for yourself or a loved one. It’s delivered digitally to you. Check out the store here.

Enjoy your weekend!

TEAMS365 #2140 –  Weekly Journaling Prompt #75

Each Saturday I offer a Weekly Journaling Prompt. These are an invitation to stop and pause and capture a little bit about your current experience.
This week’s WJP is “I’m proud of…”

Consider the last week, month or quarter. What are you most proud of accomplishing? Of doing? Or NOT doing?

We don’t always stop to pause and take stock of our accomplishments, yet a few minutes spent focusing on gratitude can make a difference.

Here’s a link to a great blog post by Jennifer Stanchfield on “The Importance of Reflection”

I was excited to see this article come up in Google given that I, and the many groups and teams that I have worked with, have benefited from the powerful conversations and reflections created from Jennifer Stanchfield’s Miniature Metaphor tool. Be sure to check it out at her site here.

Enjoy your reflections and your upcoming conversations this week!

TEAMS365 #2128 – Effective Virtual Conversations Tip 117

10/28/2019

Picture
This week’s Effective Virtual Conversations Tip takes us further into the landscape of the art of Design in Virtual and Remote Work (meetings, conversations, training etc). This week I wanted to zoom into the landscape of graphics which become such a powerful window and door opener for your conversations.

While I am not an expert with graphical design, and I rely on the trusted services of others to help me round out in this area, I am very cognizant in my own virtual presentations how much my own preferences and styles have changed in recent years.

For many years I used to teach a Presentation Skills training program and one of the things that always stuck with me was the importance t of not cramming too much content onto a slide. We used to call it the Six by Six rule. This rule stated that a slide really shouldn’t have any more than six words across and six lines of text. Today, the Six by Six rule leads to very bulky slides, and we’ve moved in many industries to a focus on minimalism.

Photography has become even more common place and we can create much more of our own imagery through our phones and cameras. If you do need to use someone else’s photos, be aware of licensing use and be sure to purchase commercial rights if you are a business. Unsplash has a great portal of stock photography as do other places.

For each of us, our market may be different and what is visually appealing to one group may not be attractive to another.

With this in mind, here are some questions to consider as you go about designing your slides for your next presentation:
  • What is the message you want to communicate through your images?
  • What are the main colors which represent your brand (or your messaging)?
  • What are your clients inspired, touched, or moved by?
  • What is the emotional message you want to communicate?
  • What images would communicate these messages?
  • What icons describe the story you want to communicate?
  • What else is important to check out around color?

For more on color use check out:
  • Canva’s Color Wheel
  • Color Theory for Designers -From Smashing Magazine

Enjoy the focus on color this week,
Jennifer
