“Permacrisis” is a term that perfectly embodies the dizzying sense of lurching from one unprecedented event to another, as we wonder bleakly what new horrors might be around the corner.
As I reflect ton the first five months of the year I realize that I am just coming out of my personal phase of PERMACRISIS.
From supporting two parents with dementia, to the instability of the marketspace and a changing workspace from virtual, to hybrid to in person, my work as a coach is in support of those in permacrisis as well.
Some of the strategies which have been supportive in helping me continue to keep moving have included:
Routines – Routines have been critical in keeping things moving in my world which spans three geographic locations.
Timeblocking – Personal productivity and time management have been critical in my world of work for many, many decades now. So much that I have written and published two workbook planners on personal productivity – PlanDoTrack (for Virtual and Remote Professionals) in 2019 and Coaching business Builder.
For years now I have earmarked certain days of the week for certain tasks – i.e. Monday, Tuesday morning and Friday for leading programming, Wednesdays and Thursdays for team engagements and/or writing and Tuesday afternoons for writing and other projects
Building in time for renewal and self-care – We all renew and rejuvenate in different ways. For me, spending time in nature and being active has always been a way I have renewed and processed the weight of crisis. In my former world of work as a leader with the United Nations working on a macro level around disruption, I realized that no one else would create the pause for me. I needed to do it myself. Today, in 2023, I continue to ensure I make the time to renew on a regular basis, whether it’s writing these blog posts poolside for a few hours, or making sure that I get to the gym or the pool early almost eery day. Sleeping well, and making sure I do things that “fill my cup” are also critical in maintaining a semblance of balance during times of disruption.
What’s going to help you renew and recharge in an era of ongoing change?
