Elements of Emotional Intelligence – Relationship Building
This week we are taking a look at the Relationship Management component of the Emotional Intelligence model. Last week we explored Self-Management here at the Teams365 blog.
Relationship Management refers to our ability to build strong and effective relationships with others. In today's business context having strong relationships are not enough. In fact, we want to couple those key relationships with a clear focus on goals and what we need to do. For many technical experts who move into the team leadership role the task focus may come easy, and the relationship management piece is the stretch.
Key areas Goleman identified as competencies in the area of relationship management are:
- Influence
- Developing Others
- Inspiration
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Conflict management
Have a great start to your week,

In a few weeks on June 2nd I'll be launching the Virtual Facilitation Skills Intensive, a fifteen hour online program I will be facilitating live around Virtual Facilitation Skills. Our ability to be more effective facilitators in leading training and meetings in the virtual realm is critical. And that's the focus of the program. Over the course of five three hour weekly sessions we will be looking not only at what makes virtual facilitation good, but also at some core tools we can use in facilitation.
Last week's post looked at Three Tools for Problem Solving (Teams365 #488: Three Tools for Problem Solving). You can listen into it here.
In today's audio I cover two tools you can use in facilitating decision making, whether you are facilitating discussion in person, or virtually. I cover one of my favorites Edward De Bono's Six Thinking Hats. Please enjoy listening into this short 10 minute audio:

Last week's 6 #Leadership Questions a day post looked at six questions to be asking at project evaluation time. If you missed it, you can access it here.
I wanted to continue on in today's post with another 6 potential questions you can be asking at project review time, whether it is a mid-point check in or end of project assessment. Consider these questions as well
•How were risks managed throughout the project?
•What were the lessons learned from the project?
•What tools, ,systems or proceses assisted in managing the project?
•What led to the success of the project?
•What was teamwork like?
•What recommendations would you have for future projects?
What other questions would you want to include in a project evaluation?
Have a great Friday,

Today's Check It Off Tip is an encouragement to go ahead and make a decision. We all usually have one decision that we've put off. Whether it's deciding where our children's birthday party is going to be held, or what we are going to do for our next team development process, not taking decisions can be an additional weight.
Part of failing to make a decision is also Procrastination. Wikipedia descibes procrastination as
"Procrastination is the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time, sometimes to the "last minute" before a deadline." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procrastination
For some, procrastination is a greater issue than just not making a decision. It can have significant impact on team performance. There is quite a bit written on managing procrastination including
A great article from MindTools on Procrastination
Lori McKee's Tips for Managing Procrastination including a video
Just a few days ago, Google bought Timeful, experimental software that tracks time - read this recent article from Forbes.
The last article is really interesting in getting us to think about where we spend our time -today notice where your time is going? How much is really productive? How much is procrastination?
Have a terrific Friday,

Today I am at our 35th Team Building Tip of this series. Today's post connects us with Project Management and some of the recent weekend series of 6 #Leadership Questions a Day I have posted on Project Planning (Teams365 #480 - Project Planning Part 1) and also Project Evaluation (Teams365 #487: Project Evaluation)
Today's Team Building Tip asks you to reflect on a current project or initiative and to consider how it is on Time? Budget? and Quality? This is what we call the triple constraint and what we aim for with any project.
What are your next steps around this project you are considering?
Have a great Thursday,

As I wrote last week, Emotional intelligence or, EI, is a core set of skill areas for leaders, particularly team leaders. Many team leaders are promoted initially due to their technical skills which may, or may not, be as developed as their interpersonal skills.
Today's post looks at the competencies or skills in the area of self-management, one of the four areas of Emotional Intelligence.
In Primal Leadership, Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee, identify key skills in the area of self-management, namely:
Self-control
Transparency
Adaptability
Achievement
Initiative
Optimism
Questions to reflect on:
What does each of these skill areas mean to you?
What is important for you in these areas?
As you consider these areas which ones are your strengths?
What does each one look like to you in your work? Your leadership?
If you were to put attention around one of them which would it be? What steps could you take to strengthen your skills and awareness in that area?
Have a great week,

It is the start of a new work week and chances are, there may be one or two tasks on your list that you really, really don't want to do. Procrastination is a challenge for many professionals along the way. Today's post points you to some useful resources if you find yourself in the spot of procrastinating around an important task.
Here are a couple of different articles and other posts to refer to:
Business Town.com's Five Reasons We Procrastinate
Jim Selman's Huffington Post article on Why Do We Procrastinate?
And finally a really interesting article from the App developers of Unstuck. You can read their 9 tips for how to stop procrastinating here
Consider these strategies:
Set a timer for 15 minutes and just get going - It is sometimes hard to get in the flow with tasks and just like in moving through writers block setting a timer and getting into action for 15 minutes may be the start of creating some momentum and movement around a task.
Create accountability partners: When we publically commit to task completion with another person, it can up the ante on getting things done. Mastermind groups are often popular for this reason
Chunk things down- sometimes we put off tasks when they feel too big or overwhelming. Chunking things down in to smaller pieces can help to make things feel more manageable.
Tackle it first in the day or when you are at your best: Many of us have times of day when we are more productive, clearer and more focused. It can be useful to consider tacking those tasks at the times when you are at your best.
What other tips do you have for getting things done when you are procrastinating?
Hope you have a focused week,
