A challenge with remote calls is that each person on a call will be surrounded by a different context. What do others need to know if you are working together? What discussions are important to have?
In contrast, when we are facilitating a group discussion where everyone’s context is different, what are we doing to help people connect in with their context, or what’s off the screen. So much learning can be “left” on the screen, rather than transferring back to our everyday work.
Consider these five ways to transfer your learning “beyond the screen”
- Leave a pause for people to think about application, make notes, schedule things in
- Consider the “arc of learning” where learning takes place over multiple touchpoints. When are you meeting again? Can you build in time to inquire about how people have used their learning and put knowledge into practice?
- Are you creating peer accountability partners so that they can revisit the learning and talk about application
- Are you following up with an assignment or outreach for people to comment on?
- Is there a journaling process
Moving our learning beyond the screen into integration and changes to our behavior is key. What’s important to note for moving the learning forward?
