Regardless of what the topic is, difficult conversations are emotionally charged and push the envelope. In approaching difficult conversations consider:
1. What are the different perspectives at play?
One of the most common roots of a conflict, or difficult conversation, is the fact that there are different perspectives at play. What is the perspective you bring? They bring? What gaps exist between the two? What don't you see about the issue that they do?
2. What is the common ground that exists?
Finding common ground is key to moving forward and not getting stuck. What is the common ground that you can rally around? What positives/pros exist within each of your perspectives and how can these be leveraged?
