AS Science Daily reports “The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is being awarded jointly to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.” (Reference: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/10/171002092603.htm)
Circadian rhythms are part of our biological mechanism which act as an internal clock. Coming from the Latin Word circa (meaning about) and dia (meaning the day), everyone’s circadian clock is a little different. Research has shown that our greatest sleeplessness is greatest between 1-3 pm in the afternoon, and 2 and 4 am. Ever wonder why after lunch is such a sluggish period?
So why is this important for virtual work and team work? Be aware that different team members may be in different time ones and in different energies of the day. This can also have impact on our work schedules, in terms of when we are most at our prime. If you are working with a global team, note that one person may be kicking into their high point of day, while another, in a different timezone, may be craving more of a nap.
This week take note of your work flow – when are you most alert? When does your main seem most clear? When are you most sluggish? What changes could you make to your work flow, so that you tackle high impact, brain required work when you are at your best, and other tasks when your mind is not as clear. I know I tend to do most of my writing and most important creative tasks in the morning when I am at my best, leaving more administrative tasks for the afternoon when my energy dips.
