The work of a virtual facilitator is one of host, educator and also guide. Keeping a strong hand on process, creates trust and safety on the part of group members.
Consider a recent conference call, or virtual learning event you were on. How did the facilitator use some, or all, of these skills related to process:
* Letting you know what the call was all about;
* Working with you, or letting you know, what you could expect about the call;
* Recapping along the way main points covered, or main areas explored;
* Using pace to keep things moving;
* Sequencing things from big picture to little picture, or easy to hard (or reverse order)
* Providing direction around who should speak when
What other skills would you see as being part of process.
If you are transitioning into working in the virtual domain you may find that you need to be even more process-oriented than you were in any face-to-face training environments. While it is possible, it can be harder, to wing things. Also, a focus on setting process early on helps to create safety or comfort and builds trust.
What else can you do to focus on process in your upcoming virtual programming?
Process skills are one of more than half a dozen skills I highlight as being critical for masterful virtual facilitators. Chapter 3 of Effective Virtual Conversations (now available on Amazon) goes into greater depth about these skills and also provides you with opportunity to do a self-assessment on your skills. The book launched last week as a #1 New Release on Amazon in the Distance and Online Learning category.
If you have been enjoying our new Monday series on Effective Virtual Conversations, I hope that you will join me this month and throughout the fall for twice a month complimentary community calls. Next call is today, Monday August 7th from 11 - 11:30 am ET - Four Essentials for Engagement in the Virtual Space.
Have a great start to your week,
Jennifer
