Today's Virtual Facilitation tip is a reminder that when our group size grows its not just about adding one person. We need to recognize that it's an exponential addition to our virtual space. Each new virtual group member will bring with them their own webs of connection with others, perspectives, insights and potential for challenges - tech and others. j
What do you notice about the optimal size of virtual groups you run. In my book - Effective Group Coaching - published almost 7 years ago now I had asked a variety of coaches who coached virtual groups what their optimum group size was. The range of 4-8 was usually the sweet spot for ensuring that virtual groups were connected enough to drop into the coaching conversation. For more than a decade most of my groups have been in this range as well. While it's very easy to stack a lot of people in a virtual group, the more we add the more often we see people start to disengage, multi-task and not participate.
This week consider your experience with any virtual groups you lead, or are part of. What do you notice about optimal group size.
With best wishes,
Jennifer
