Discussion Topic: “What’s One Thing We Could Stop Doing to Make Room for What Matters Most?”
This question challenges the team to think about priorities, focus, and alignment with organizational goals. It prompts a conversation around where time, energy, and resources are being spent, and whether these investments are yielding the best results. Often, in the hustle of daily tasks, we find ourselves doing things that no longer serve our highest purpose or align with our strategic objectives.
Here’s how to facilitate this discussion:
Step 1: Set the Stage
Start by creating a safe and open environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts. Emphasize that this is a brainstorming session aimed at improving team efficiency and impact, not a critique of anyone's work.
Step 2: Pose the Question
Present the question to the team: “What’s one thing we could stop doing to make room for what matters most?” Give everyone a few minutes to reflect individually and jot down their thoughts.
Step 3: Encourage Sharing and Dialogue
Invite team members to share their ideas one by one. Encourage open dialogue around each suggestion. For example, if someone suggests stopping a particular meeting or report, explore the reasons behind it. What value is it currently providing? Could the same outcome be achieved in a more efficient way?
Step 4: Identify Common Themes
Look for common themes or patterns in the responses. Are there tasks or processes mentioned multiple times? Discuss why these might not be serving the team’s or organization’s goals anymore and consider alternative approaches.
Step 5: Action Plan
Conclude by identifying one or two things the team agrees to stop doing or change. Make sure there’s consensus and clarity on how this decision will make room for more strategic priorities. Assign someone to follow up on the agreed actions and assess the impact over the next few weeks.
By engaging in this type of dialogue, your team can uncover opportunities to streamline efforts, focus on what truly matters, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. So, gather your team this Thursday, ask the question, and see where the conversation leads!
