Strengths are even more important in a world of complex change as we will see in tomorrow’s blog post on The Importance of Incorporating Strengths in Organizations During Times of Complex Change.
For today, I wanted to highlight three key lessons learned from the very successful offsite last week my client organized around strengths:
#1 – Get the conversation started early. Don’t just wait for the offsite to start the conversation – in fact the assessment was rolled out early in multiple waves to involve everyone at different stages over a 3 month period. This allowed for absorption, reflection and implementation of the new insights, BEFORE we came together to deepen individual understanding of individual strengths and a collective mapping of collective strengths.
#2 – Where are you really wanting to shape your organizational culture? Focusing on culture change is a key priority for most organizations. Yet, at the same time, there is often little thought around HOW to shift organizational culture and the multiple steps, touchpoints and SERIES of Conversations needed. I would put this work last week in the bucket of excellence in starting to co-create a new culture in the organization, one that was inclusive and co-created.
What are you doing to involve everyone in the conversation, as well as to equip leaders with the tools, insights and practices they need to cascade this out to their teams and embed it in their team practices and structures.
#3 – Double down on the focus with whatever framework you are using. What I appreciated about this project was the multiple touchpoints THROUGHOUT the lifecycle of the project which spanned almost six months. Large group, smaller group, in person and virtual touchpoints with me, were also embedded in the organization.
Whether you are looking to build a strengths based culture or simply a new culture, I hope that this helps you.
