teams 365 #3550: Weekly Journaling Propmpt – What Kind of Coach am I?

Picture
Over the last 18 months I’ve spent a lot of time letting people know about the Group and Team Coaching Superpower Quiz™ I created and launched in summer of 2022. My goal is to have more than 25,000 coaches take it in the next 2 years, so we can really get some data around the different coaching styles that exist.

As a long time coach trainer (we turn 20 next April) I’ve worked with thousands of coaches to build their coaching muscles, inside and outside of organizations.

This led me to the new Tuesday series – Coaching Conversation Sparkers™, building onto the brand I started back in 2014.

Today’s prompt gets you thinking about what kind of coach are you? Are you the type of coach who likes to create a lot of fireworks with those you are coaching, or a lot of space? The opportunity to look at different perspectives or accelerated results? There is no one right answer, but to get you closer to it, check out the Team and Group Coaching Superpower Quiz at https://bit.ly/gtcoachingsuperpower.

Enjoy the reflection!

teams 365 #3549: Friday Flashback – A reminder of an oldie but a goodie – 5 Actionable Coaching Tips for You  as a Leader

9/22/2023

Picture
I’ve been spending a lot of time this fall exploring coaching with leaders. It made me think of an article I wrote several years ago around practical things leaders can do and how they can describe coaching to those on their team. Let’s take a look back at that article again - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/5-actionable-coaching-tips-make-you-better-leader-jennifer/?trk=pulse_spock-articles

For those that get asked, What is coaching really and how can it help, here’s what I share in that article:

“Leaders as coach” focus on:

Creating trust and connection within the team
Helping team members clarify their goals
Supporting team members in identifying and exploring different options for approaching their work, overcoming challenges and leveraging opportunities
Providing a focus on accountability
Working with each team member on troubleshooting & resources
Clarifying roles & supporting the development of a shared vision
Supporting the team individually and collectively to do their best work
Leaders as coach are part of a paradigm shift. In stepping into the role of leader as coach, we are shifting from doing the work and needing to solve issues ourselves to empowering our team members to make decisions, and…

Leaders as coach lead from several key skills including listening, questioning, empowering, goal setting, exploring perspectives and creating accountability

Teams 365 #3548: How You Use Triggers in Creating Habits for Business Routines

9/21/2023

Picture
Creating effective business routines relies on the strategic use of triggers to drive productivity and efficiency. Triggers are cues or stimuli that prompt specific actions or behaviors. By incorporating triggers into your daily work habits, you can streamline tasks, enhance focus, and optimize your workflow. Here are some examples of how triggers can be leveraged to create successful business routines:

  1. Morning Rituals: To kickstart your workday, establish a morning trigger, such as a specific song, to signal the transition from personal time to work mode. This trigger can help you mentally prepare for the tasks ahead.
  2. Email Management: Instead of constantly checking your email throughout the day, set specific times as triggers for email management. For instance, designate the first 15 minutes of your workday and the last 15 minutes before you wrap up as dedicated email-checking periods.
  3. Task Prioritization: Use a trigger like a daily checklist or a task management app to help prioritize your to-do list. This visual cue will guide you in tackling the most important tasks first, ensuring that critical work is not overlooked.
  4. Meeting Preparation: Before meetings, establish a trigger to review the agenda and relevant materials. This could be an automated calendar reminder or a checklist that prompts you to gather all necessary documents in advance, ensuring you're well-prepared.
  5. Focus Blocks: Implement focused work sessions by setting a timer as a trigger. During this predetermined period, you commit to working on a specific task without distractions. This trigger helps improve concentration and boosts productivity.
  6. Networking: If networking is an essential part of your business routine, use event invitations or industry-related news as triggers to schedule follow-up conversations or outreach. Consistent follow-up is key to building and maintaining professional relationships.
  7. Project Milestones: For larger projects, break them down into smaller milestones and set calendar notifications or visual cues to celebrate achievements. Acknowledging progress can motivate you to stay on track and complete the project successfully.
  8. End-of-Day Routine: Develop a trigger, such as a digital calendar reminder, to signal the end of your workday. Use this time to wrap up loose ends, organize your workspace, and create a to-do list for the next day, ensuring a smooth start in the morning.

Incorporating triggers into your business routines can help you stay organized, efficient, and focused on your goals. By aligning these cues with your objectives, you create a structured framework that optimizes your workflow and enhances your overall productivity in the business world.

Teams 365 #3547: Power of Habits: the What, Why and How

9/20/2023

Picture
Habits are the silent architects of our lives, influencing our actions and decisions more than we might realize. They're the routines we follow almost automatically, from our morning coffee ritual to the way we organize our workdays. Let's explore the power of habits: what they are, why they matter, and how to harness their potential for personal and professional growth.

What are Habits?
Habits are behaviors that have become automatic through repetition. They're the brain's way of conserving mental energy by turning actions into automatic routines. Whether it's brushing your teeth or checking your email first thing in the morning, habits simplify our lives.

Why Do Habits Matter?
Habits matter because they shape who we are and how we live. They can be both constructive and destructive. Good habits, like regular exercise or mindful eating, contribute to our well-being, while bad habits, such as procrastination or overindulgence, can hinder our progress.

Habits also play a crucial role in achieving long-term goals. By breaking down big objectives into small, manageable actions and turning them into habits, we make progress more sustainable and achievable.

How to Harness the Power of Habits
  1. Identify Existing Habits: Start by recognizing your current habits, both the beneficial and detrimental ones. Self-awareness is the first step in any habit-change process.
  2. Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve. Whether it's improving your health, increasing productivity, or enhancing relationships, having clear goals will give you direction.
  3. Start Small: Don't overwhelm yourself with drastic changes. Begin with tiny, manageable adjustments to your routines that align with your goals.
  4. Use Triggers: Associate your new habits with existing cues or triggers. For example, if you want to read more, place a book next to your bed to prompt bedtime reading.
  5. Track Progress: Keep a journal or use habit-tracking apps to monitor your progress. This provides accountability and motivation.
  6. Stay Consistent: Consistency is key to habit formation. Aim to repeat the behavior consistently until it becomes second nature.
  7. Be Patient: Habits take time to establish. Don't be discouraged by setbacks; instead, view them as opportunities to learn and improve.

In conclusion, habits are a powerful force in our lives. By understanding their nature, recognizing their impact, and consciously working to establish positive habits, you can transform your daily routines and make lasting improvements in various aspects of your life. Embrace the power of habits, and watch as they help you become the best version of yourself.

Teams 365 #3546: The Science Behind Habit Formation

9/19/2023

Picture
Habits are the invisible architects of our daily lives, influencing our actions and decisions often without our conscious awareness. But have you ever wondered about the science behind habit formation? Why do some habits stick, while others fade away? Let's delve into the fascinating world of habit formation.

  1. The Habit Loop: At the core of every habit is a neurological pattern called the "habit loop." It consists of three components: the cue, the routine, and the reward. The cue triggers your brain to initiate the habit, the routine is the behavior itself, and the reward reinforces the habit, making it more likely to be repeated.
  2. Neuroplasticity: Our brains are remarkably adaptable. This neuroplasticity allows us to form and change habits. Every time we repeat a habit, the neural pathways associated with that habit become stronger, making it easier to perform over time. This is why it can be challenging to break bad habits – those neural pathways are deeply ingrained.
  3. Consistency is Key: Research suggests that consistency is crucial in habit formation. The more consistently you perform a behavior in response to a specific cue, the stronger the habit becomes. This is why setting a regular schedule or routine can be highly effective in establishing new habits.
  4. Reward and Dopamine: The brain releases dopamine, a feel-good neurotransmitter, when we receive a reward after completing a habit. This reinforces the habit loop by associating the behavior with pleasure or satisfaction. Over time, the brain begins to crave that dopamine release, making the habit even more automatic.
  5. Environment Matters: Your environment plays a significant role in habit formation. If your environment makes it easy to engage in a habit, you're more likely to do it. Conversely, if your environment makes it difficult, you're less likely to follow through. Consider modifying your surroundings to support your desired habits.
  6. Habit Replacement: Breaking a bad habit often involves replacing it with a healthier one. Identify the cue and reward of your unwanted habit, and then find a positive routine that delivers a similar reward. This can help rewire your brain and create a new, more beneficial habit.
  7. Patience and Persistence: Habit formation takes time and effort. It's not about instant transformation but rather gradual change. Be patient with yourself and persistent in your efforts to establish or break habits.

In conclusion, understanding the science behind habit formation can empower you to take control of your behaviors and make positive changes in your life. Whether you're looking to adopt new habits or ditch old ones, knowing the underlying mechanisms can be a valuable tool on your journey toward personal growth and self-improvement.

Teams 365 #3545: Leveraging Habits for Fall Business Routines

9/18/2023

Picture
As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, it's the perfect time to revisit and revamp your business routines. Fall offers a fresh start, and one of the most powerful tools at your disposal for creating positive change is the leverage of habits. Habits are the foundation of our daily lives, and by harnessing their power, you can supercharge your productivity and success this season.

  1. Morning Rituals: Start your day with intention by establishing a morning routine. Whether it's a brisk walk, meditation, or a hearty breakfast, a consistent morning ritual can set a positive tone for your entire day. Use the autumn mornings as an opportunity to reconnect with your goals and priorities.
  2. Goal Setting: Fall is a great time to review your yearly goals and make necessary adjustments. Identify what you want to achieve before the year's end and break those goals down into actionable steps. Create a habit of regularly checking in on your progress to stay on track.
  3. Time Blocking: Time management is crucial for productivity. Implement time blocking, where you allocate specific time slots for different tasks. This habit can help you maintain focus and prevent overwhelm, especially as the holiday season approaches.
  4. Health and Wellness: Don't forget to prioritize your health. Make time for regular exercise, balanced meals, and sufficient sleep. These habits will not only boost your physical well-being but also enhance your cognitive abilities and decision-making.
  5. Networking and Outreach: Fall often brings industry events and conferences. Cultivate the habit of networking and reaching out to new contacts. Attend virtual or in-person events, engage with peers on social media, and set aside time for professional development.
  6. Reflect and Adjust: Habits are not set in stone. Regularly reflect on your routines and assess their effectiveness. Be open to making adjustments as needed to ensure you're continuously improving and adapting to changing circumstances.
  7. Time for Creativity: Fall's cozy atmosphere can be a great backdrop for creativity. Set aside time for brainstorming and ideation sessions. Whether you're in a creative field or not, tapping into your creative side can lead to innovative solutions and ideas for your business.

In conclusion, fall is a season of change and growth. By leveraging the power of habits, you can establish routines that support your business goals and personal well-being. Take this opportunity to embrace positive habits and set the stage for a successful and fulfilling season ahead.

teams 365 #3543: Weekly Journaling Prompt: What’s an incremental change?

9/16/2023

Picture
Change does not often happen in leaps and bounds but rather through small steps, and incremental changes. Things we do consistently and possibly on a daily basis.

Consider these three quotes:
"Small actions, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world." – Howard Zinn

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." – Lao Tzu

"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out." – Robert Collier

With today’s Weekly Journaling Prompt consider the notion of small steps, and incremental change.

Here are some questions to consider:

What’s an incremental change for you?

What’s important about making these changes?

What’s the end result you are aiming for?

Enjoy the reflection!

teams 365 #3542: Flashback – Last year’s focus on Routines, Habits and Practices

Given that the Teams365 blog is now in it’s 9th year of publication, I find it has become a fascinating time marker for me as a practitioner, consultant, coach and author. It is in some ways a window into current events and hot topics of the moment. I thought it would be interesting to look back to last year and where we were at the time. Here’s what was in focus – a video call on Routines, Habits and Practices, that I explored last week live with a group of entrepreneurs – as much as things change, many things remain the same:

Take a look at last year’s post - TEAMS365 #3173: WEEKLY VIDEO – ROUTINES, HABITS AND PRACTICES #letstalkvirtual #standoutvirtually - POTENTIALS REALIZED

Take a look at the video:
EMBED video link here as well.

What routines, habits and practices will support you?

Enjoy your reflection!

Teams 365 #3540: Retreat Renewal: Key Focus Areas for Teams this Fall

9/13/2023

Picture
As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, fall offers the perfect backdrop for teams to come together and rejuvenate their spirits. Retreats during this season provide a unique opportunity for bonding, reflection, and strategic planning. Here are some key focus areas that teams can prioritize during their fall retreats:

  1. Team Building and Bonding: Use the retreat to strengthen team relationships and enhance camaraderie. Engage in team-building activities that encourage collaboration, communication, and trust. By forging stronger connections, team members can work more effectively together back in the workplace.
  2. Reflect on Achievements and Challenges: Fall retreats provide a natural opportunity for teams to reflect on their accomplishments and challenges over the past year. Celebrate achievements and use the lessons learned from challenges to inform future strategies.
  3. Strategic Planning: Utilize the retreat to brainstorm and plan for the upcoming year. Discuss goals, priorities, and strategies to ensure alignment and a clear direction for the team. Assign action items and responsibilities to lay a strong foundation for the months ahead.
  4. Skill Enhancement Workshops: Offer skill enhancement workshops or training sessions relevant to the team's goals. This can include leadership development, communication skills, or specific technical training. Investing in skill development empowers team members to contribute more effectively.
  5. Innovative Idea Generation: Encourage creative thinking and innovative idea generation during the retreat. Create a space where team members can share their insights and visions for the future. Collecting diverse perspectives can lead to breakthrough solutions and new initiatives.
  6. Nature and Wellness Activities: Take advantage of the fall season by incorporating outdoor activities and wellness experiences into the retreat. Nature hikes, outdoor yoga, or mindfulness sessions can promote relaxation, boost team morale, and contribute to overall well-being.
  7. Team Values and Culture: Revisit and reinforce the team's values and culture. Use the retreat to discuss how these values are being upheld and identify ways to align actions with the desired team culture.
  8. Appreciation and Recognition: Dedicate time to express gratitude and recognition for each team member's contributions. Celebrate individual achievements and acknowledge the collective effort that propels the team forward.
  9. Long-Term Visioning: Reflect on the team's long-term vision and aspirations. Discuss where the team sees itself in the next few years and outline strategies to move closer to those goals.

In conclusion, fall retreats offer teams a valuable opportunity to come together, reflect, and plan for the future. By focusing on team building, reflection, strategic planning, skill enhancement, innovation, nature activities, team values, appreciation, and long-term visioning, teams can make the most of their retreat experience and set the stage for a successful and fulfilling year ahead.
