Teams365 #3901: 5 Elements to Consider in creating Interactive Onboarding programs

9/17/2024

Picture
I've been talking a lot about onboarding over the last few months as the new 90-Day Guide for Success card deck has launched on the Deckible app (Check it out at [this link](https://bit.ly/90dayguidedeck1)). It's a digital resource for leaders to use with their teams, as well as a resource for HR to consider for their new team members during their onboarding process. Last week I did the 4-day challenge to DEMO the digital card deck a little bit more.

Here are five elements to consider when designing your onboarding process:

1. Support from Day One
New team members need to feel supported from the very beginning. This includes assigning a mentor or onboarding buddy who can guide them through the first few weeks, answer questions, and provide insights into the company culture. A solid support system can make a significant difference in easing the transition and setting new hires up for success.

2. Engagement through Interactive Tools
Engagement is critical to an effective onboarding experience. Incorporating interactive tools like digital card decks, quizzes, or group activities can make the onboarding process more engaging and less monotonous. The 90-Day Guide for Success card deck, for example, provides a structured yet flexible approach to keep new hires engaged as they navigate their new roles.

3. Daily Steps to Build Momentum
Onboarding isn't just a one-time event—it's an ongoing process. Encourage new team members to take small, consistent steps daily. This could be as simple as setting up short-term goals, completing specific tasks, or engaging in daily reflections. Small, daily actions help build momentum, ensuring that new hires feel productive and progressively more confident in their roles.

4. Integration into Team Dynamics
Successful onboarding goes beyond individual orientation; it’s about integrating new hires into the team dynamic. Facilitate regular team interactions, encourage participation in team meetings, and provide opportunities for new hires to contribute to team discussions and projects early on. This fosters a sense of belonging and boosts morale.

5. Clear Communication of Expectations
Clarity is key. New hires need to know what is expected of them and what success looks like in their role. Clear communication about goals, performance metrics, and feedback processes helps to align their efforts with the organization's objectives and reduces anxiety.

By considering these five elements, you can create a robust onboarding process that fosters connection, engagement, and success from day one.

Teams365 #3890: Friday Flashback Teams365 #202: Team Agreements

9/6/2024

Picture
One of the things that I hear from teams and leaders that I work with, that has the biggest impact, both short term and longer term, is the work that we do around creating shared team agreements. You will recall back in January, that shared behavioral norms are one of the six factors of high performing teams (LINK). Great teams have co-defined what behaviors are acceptable and what are not. When unacceptable behaviors emerge, we move into the terrain of Toxicity, as illustrated in some of this year’s Teams365 Cartoons.

In creating team agreements you may lead from the question “What are the behaviors that are going to support us to do our best work?”

Which of these are ones we can all agree to - through thick and thin? 24/7?

As you identify what the behaviors are -  trust, respect - have people further define what the behaviors look like. These are more accurate, and measurable, than the larger catchments.

Each team agreement set will look different. How can you keep these visible?

One hospital team I worked with created a large poster which they hung in the hallway en route to their office. It was a reminder for them everyday, as well as a conversation starter for others who came to visit them. Over time, this team became one of the key leaders at their site. Many of them attributed their success to these common team agreements which helped them re-caliabrate when they got off the mark, and helped them run together in alignment.

Teams365 #3889: Teams on Thursday: Three Things to Consider as You Ramp Up for the Fall

9/5/2024

Picture
As summer draws to a close, many teams are gearing up for a busy fall season. The transition from the relaxed pace of summer to the high-energy demands of fall can be challenging. Here are three key considerations to help your team make a smooth and productive transition:

1. Reconnect and Realign:

After the summer, team members may have been working remotely, taking vacations, or focusing on different projects. It's essential to take the time to reconnect and realign. Start by hosting a team meeting to check in on everyone's summer experiences and insights. Use this opportunity to revisit the team’s goals and priorities. Are they still relevant? Do they need to be adjusted based on recent developments? Encourage open dialogue to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Reconnecting and realigning will help the team focus on shared objectives and foster a sense of unity and purpose.

2. Plan for the Busy Season:

Fall often brings a surge in activities, deadlines, and projects. Now is the time to anticipate these demands and plan accordingly. Create a detailed schedule that outlines key milestones and deadlines for the coming months. Be realistic about the workload and consider potential challenges or bottlenecks. Prioritize tasks and projects based on their importance and deadlines. Use tools like the PlanDoTrack Workbook and Planner to map out a clear action plan. This proactive approach will help the team stay organized, manage stress, and maintain momentum as the workload increases.

3. Focus on Well-being and Balance:

As workloads ramp up, it's crucial to ensure that team members are not overwhelmed. Encourage a healthy work-life balance by promoting regular breaks, setting realistic expectations, and encouraging self-care. Consider implementing wellness programs or offering resources for stress management. A team that feels supported and balanced is more likely to be productive, engaged, and resilient. Keep an open line of communication so team members feel comfortable sharing any concerns or challenges they may face.

By focusing on reconnection, planning, and well-being, your team can navigate the fall season with confidence and success. Here's to a productive and fulfilling fall!

Teams365 #3884: Stepping into a New Month – Let’s do a wrap up of August, and Set the Stage for September

8/31/2024

Picture
As August comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished, learned, and experienced over the past month. But it’s not just about looking back—it's also about setting the stage for a productive and fulfilling September. To help you wrap up August and prepare for the month ahead, here are 12 powerful questions to consider. Grab your favorite journal or a cozy corner, and let’s dive in!

Reflecting on August

1. What were your biggest achievements this month?
   - Celebrate your wins, big or small. What goals did you meet? What projects did you complete? Reflecting on your successes helps reinforce positive behaviors and boosts motivation.

2. What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
   - Acknowledging the hurdles you encountered can offer valuable insights into your resilience and problem-solving skills. How did you navigate through difficult situations?

3. What did you learn about yourself?
   - August likely presented you with opportunities for personal growth. Did you discover new strengths or areas where you’d like to improve? Self-awareness is key to continuous growth.

4. Which relationships did you nurture?
   - Relationships are the backbone of our personal and professional lives. Reflect on the connections you strengthened this month. How did you show up for others, and how did they show up for you?

5. How did you take care of your well-being?
   - Your health—physical, mental, and emotional—deserves attention. What did you do to recharge and maintain balance in your life? Were there moments when you prioritized rest and self-care?

6. What unexpected opportunities arose?
   - Life often throws us curveballs that turn out to be opportunities in disguise. Did you seize any unexpected chances in August? How did they impact your path?

Planning for September

7. What are your top priorities for the month ahead?
   - Setting clear priorities helps you stay focused and avoid getting overwhelmed. What are the most important goals you want to achieve in September?

8. What habits or routines will you carry forward?
   - Consider the positive habits you developed in August. Which ones do you want to maintain or enhance in September to support your goals?

9. What new skills or knowledge do you want to acquire?
   - Continuous learning is essential for growth. Are there specific skills or knowledge areas you want to focus on this month? How will they contribute to your personal or professional development?

10. How will you maintain your well-being?
    - Plan for self-care in September by identifying practices that keep you balanced and energized. What will you do to ensure you’re taking care of yourself?

11. Who will you connect with or collaborate with this month?
    - Building and maintaining relationships should be a priority. Are there specific people or groups you want to connect with or collaborate on projects? How can you nurture these connections?

12. What’s your mantra or theme for September?
    - Setting a mantra or theme can guide your actions and decisions throughout the month. It could be something like “Focus and Flourish” or “Embrace the Journey.” What phrase will inspire you in September?

Conclusion

As you step into September, use these questions to reflect on your journey, celebrate your progress, and set meaningful intentions for the month ahead. Remember, each month is a new chapter filled with opportunities to grow, connect, and thrive. Let’s make September a month to remember!

Teams365 #3883: Friday - Flashback Teams365 #1571: #FlashbackFriday: The First 90 Days for Leaders

8/30/2024

Picture
It's Friday and time for another FlashbackFriday. Today I am reaching back to a 2014 post on the first 90 days for team leaders, inspired by a series of different conversations I have had this week with leaders assuming new posts. Whether you are  team leader, a VP or other.

The first 90 days of any role is critical, especially as a team leader. We often say that the first step up into leadership is the greatest.

During these first three months of your new role a number of elements will require your attention:

1. Getting to know your team. Who are they? What are their roles? How are they connected? what are the priorities for the team? What are the team's strengths - collectively and individually? What is the team known for? What is the greatest untapped advantage for this team.
As the team leader your team is critical. Make sure you spend time getting to know them and learn from them.

2. Getting to know your boss - Developing relationships with your boss is also important. What are their expectations of you? Of the team?  What do they see key priorities for the team? For you? What is their perspective on strategic issues facing the team? What are their priorities? How does your work, and the team's work, support their success? How does your leader want to be communicated to? What information is most important for them to have, and WHEN?

3. Developing relationships with your other stakeholders - Developing relationships with other key stakeholders internally and externally is also critical during the first 90 days. Who are these players? What can you learn from them about the team's past successes and history, and what's important as you move forward?

4. Understanding your role and developing skills - As in most transitions there will be some time required to understand your role as well as develop new skills and knowledge - these may be around budgeting, reporting or other technical areas. Make a list as you go around the short term, medium term and long term learning needs you forsee.

5. Identifying a mentor - Mentoring can play a key role in your overall career and leadership success. You may benefit from a formal mentoring program, or this may be the nudge to reach out and establish a mentoring relationship from someone who knows the ropes. Mentors play a key role in understanding how organizations operate, and how things do get done.

What do you see as critical issues in your first 90 days?

Enjoy your conversations,
Jennifer

Teams365 #3882: Teams on Thursday: 5 Truths to Explore for Boosting Trust—Neuroscience Style!

8/29/2024

Picture
It’s Thursday, and your team is chugging along, but there’s something even more vital than productivity at stake—trust. Trust is the magic ingredient that makes teams unstoppable, but it’s not something that just happens. It’s built, nurtured, and reinforced. Today, we’re diving into five fun, neuroscience-backed truths that can help you and your team boost trust and, ultimately, performance. Ready? Let’s explore!

1. Trust Starts with Eye Contact

Ever notice how you feel more connected to someone when they look you in the eye? That’s not just your imagination—science says it’s true! Eye contact activates the social brain network, releasing oxytocin, the “bonding hormone.” This hormone is essential for building trust and rapport. So, whether it’s during a meeting or a casual chat, make sure to maintain eye contact. It signals sincerity and helps forge deeper connections with your team members.

2. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Here’s a fun fact: mirroring someone’s body language can actually build trust! When you subtly mimic a colleague’s posture, gestures, or tone of voice, you’re engaging in a nonverbal form of communication that says, “I’m on the same page as you.” This phenomenon is called the “chameleon effect,” and it can make interactions smoother and foster a sense of mutual understanding. Just remember to keep it natural—no one likes a copycat!

3. Give a Little, Get a Lot

Altruism and trust go hand in hand, and your brain loves it when you give without expecting anything in return. Acts of kindness trigger the release of dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical, in both the giver and the receiver. Whether it’s offering help on a project or sharing a valuable resource, these small gestures build goodwill and trust within the team. Plus, the more you give, the more you strengthen the social bonds that keep your team tight-knit.

4. Laughter Is the Best Medicine

Want to build trust? Share a laugh! Laughter is a powerful social glue that brings people closer together. When you laugh, your brain releases endorphins, which reduce stress and promote feelings of happiness and connection. Incorporating humor into your team interactions can break down barriers, foster openness, and create an environment where trust thrives. So, don’t be afraid to crack a joke or share a funny story—your team will thank you for it!

5. The Power of Vulnerability

Here’s a truth that might surprise you: showing vulnerability is a key component of building trust. When leaders and tea
m members admit mistakes or share uncertainties, it humanizes them and signals that it’s okay to take risks. Neuroscience backs this up—when we see others being vulnerable, our brains release oxytocin, which strengthens trust and encourages open communication. Embrace transparency, and watch your team’s trust levels soar.

Conclusion

Trust isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a must-have for high-performing teams. By focusing on these five neuroscience-backed truths—eye contact, mirroring, altruism, laughter, and vulnerability—you can create a culture of trust that propels your team to new heights. So, as you wrap up your Thursday, remember: building trust is as much about the little moments as it is about the big ones. Keep it fun, keep it real, and watch your team thrive!

Teams365 #3881: Mid-Week Motivation: 5 Fun Ways to Boost Your Workplace Mojo!

8/28/2024

Picture
Ah, Wednesday. The day that sits smack dab in the middle of the workweek, often dragging its feet like a cat that's been asked to take a bath. But fear not! If your motivation is sagging like that forgotten bag of salad in the back of your fridge, it's time to give your mojo a much-needed boost. Here are five fun, neuroscience-backed ways to crank up your workplace motivation and turn Hump Day into Pump Day!

1. Dance It Out (Yes, Really!)

You don’t need to be a professional dancer to reap the benefits of moving to your favorite tunes. A quick dance break can do wonders for your motivation. How? When you dance, your brain releases a cocktail of feel-good chemicals like dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin. These neurotransmitters not only elevate your mood but also enhance focus and creativity. So, next time you feel the mid-week slump creeping in, crank up that playlist, shake it off, and watch your motivation skyrocket!

2. Snack Smart: Fuel Your Brain

Ever heard of the term "hangry"? It’s a real thing! Your brain consumes a whopping 20% of your daily energy intake, so it’s crucial to keep it well-fueled. Opt for snacks that provide a steady release of energy, like nuts, berries, or dark chocolate (yes, chocolate!). These foods are rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, which support brain function and keep you sharp. So, when that 3 PM slump hits, reach for a brain-boosting snack and power through your tasks with renewed zest.

3. Practice a Power Pose

Channel your inner superhero and strike a power pose! Research by social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows that standing in a confident, expansive posture (think Wonder Woman or Superman) for just two minutes can increase testosterone (the confidence hormone) and decrease cortisol (the stress hormone). This simple act can instantly boost your confidence and motivation, making you feel ready to tackle whatever challenges come your way. So, go ahead—stand tall, hands on hips, and own the room!

4. Gamify Your Day

Who says work can’t be fun? Turn your tasks into a game to keep your motivation levels high. Set small, achievable goals and reward yourself for hitting them. Whether it’s a 5-minute break for every hour of focused work or a special treat for completing a big project, these little rewards activate the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine and making you more eager to keep going. Plus, who doesn’t love a little friendly competition with themselves?

5. Connect and Collaborate

Humans are social creatures, and connecting with others can give your motivation a serious boost. When you collaborate with colleagues, your brain releases oxytocin, the "bonding hormone," which fosters trust, teamwork, and motivation. So, instead of going it alone, schedule a quick brainstorming session or coffee chat with a coworker. Sharing ideas and working together not only makes tasks more enjoyable but also sparks new inspiration and energy.

Conclusion

With these five fun and scientifically-backed strategies, you can turn your mid-week slump into a surge of motivation. So, dance, snack, pose, play, and connect your way to a more productive and energized week. Remember, a little boost to your workplace mojo can make all the difference in how you tackle the rest of your workweek!

Teams365 #3880: 5 Key Areas to Boost Your Routines, Productivity, and Habits as You Get Back to Work This Fall

8/27/2024

Picture
As summer winds down and the fall season approaches, it's the perfect time to reassess and reinvigorate your routines, productivity strategies, and daily habits. Whether you're returning to a busy work schedule or gearing up for new projects, focusing on these five key areas can help you make the most of your time and set yourself up for a successful fall.

1. Refine Your Morning Routine

A strong morning routine sets the tone for the rest of the day. As you transition back to work, consider refining your morning habits to better align with your goals. Start with small adjustments—wake up 15 minutes earlier to enjoy some quiet time, incorporate a brief exercise session, or spend a few minutes reviewing your priorities for the day. By starting your day with intention, you can boost your energy, focus, and productivity.

2. Prioritize Your Tasks with the Eisenhower Matrix

Effective task management is crucial as you get back into the swing of things. The Eisenhower Matrix, which categorizes tasks into four quadrants (urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important), can help you prioritize your workload. By focusing on what truly matters and delegating or deferring less critical tasks, you can manage your time more efficiently and reduce the risk of burnout.

3. Implement Time Blocking for Better Focus

Time blocking is a powerful technique for enhancing productivity. As you plan your fall schedule, try dividing your day into blocks of time dedicated to specific tasks or projects. This approach minimizes distractions and helps you stay on track. Be sure to include blocks for breaks and downtime to maintain balance and prevent fatigue. By dedicating focused periods to important tasks, you can work more efficiently and accomplish more.

#### 4. **Incorporate Regular Reflection and Review**

To continuously improve your productivity and habits, it's essential to regularly reflect on what's working and what isn't. Set aside time at the end of each week to review your progress, assess challenges, and adjust your strategies as needed. This habit of reflection allows you to make informed decisions, stay aligned with your goals, and make necessary adjustments before small issues become major roadblocks.

5. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

As you get back to work, adopting a growth mindset can be a game-changer for your productivity and overall well-being. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than as obstacles. Celebrate small wins and view setbacks as part of the learning process. A growth mindset not only enhances your ability to adapt to change but also fosters resilience, creativity, and long-term success.

Conclusion

By focusing on these five key areas—morning routines, task prioritization, time blocking, regular reflection, and a growth mindset—you can boost your productivity and establish positive habits that will carry you through the fall season and beyond. As you get back to work, these strategies will help you stay organized, motivated, and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.

Teams365 #3879: 5 Key Areas to Focus on as Your Team Prepares for the Fall

8/26/2024

Picture
As summer draws to a close, teams everywhere are gearing up for a productive and impactful fall. Whether you're returning from a well-deserved break or transitioning from the slower pace of summer, the fall season is a prime opportunity to refocus, realign, and re-energize your team. Here are five key areas to focus on to ensure your team is set up for success as you head into the fall:

1. Revisit and Realign Goals

The start of a new season is an ideal time to revisit your team’s goals. Are they still relevant? Do they need to be adjusted based on what you’ve learned over the summer? Bring the team together to discuss current objectives, realign priorities, and set clear, actionable goals for the remainder of the year. This process ensures everyone is on the same page and motivated to move forward with clarity.

2. Reinforce Team Connections

Summer can often lead to a natural disconnection within teams, with vacations and varying schedules. Reinforcing connections among team members is crucial as you transition into fall. Consider organizing team-building activities or workshops to rebuild camaraderie and trust. Simple practices like regular check-ins and open discussions can also help re-establish strong communication and collaboration.

3.Review and Optimize Workflows

As you prepare for the busy months ahead, take time to review your team’s workflows and processes. What’s working well, and what could be improved? Identifying inefficiencies now can help streamline operations, reduce stress, and increase productivity as the workload ramps up. Encourage team members to share feedback on processes and involve them in the optimization process to foster ownership and engagement.

4. Focus on Learning and Development

Fall is an excellent time to invest in your team’s professional growth. Assess the skills your team needs to develop to meet upcoming challenges and consider providing relevant training or resources. Whether it’s through workshops, online courses, or peer learning sessions, continuous learning keeps your team agile, motivated, and equipped to tackle new projects with confidence.

5. Prioritize Well-being and Balance

As the pace picks up in the fall, it’s essential to keep team well-being and work-life balance at the forefront. Encourage practices that promote mental and physical health, such as regular breaks, flexible working hours, and mindfulness activities. A balanced team is more resilient, productive, and capable of sustaining momentum throughout the season.

Conclusion

By focusing on these five areas—goal realignment, team connections, workflow optimization, continuous learning, and well-being—you can set your team up for a successful fall. As you transition into the new season, these strategies will help your team navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and maintain a positive and productive work environment.
