Teams365 #3873: What Are Card Decks and Why They Matter in Today’s Talent Landscape

8/20/2024

Picture
In the evolving landscape of talent development, organizations are constantly seeking new ways to engage employees, foster innovation, and drive performance. One increasingly popular tool that is gaining traction in this space is the use of card decks. Far from being just simple playing cards, these decks are thoughtfully designed resources that serve a variety of purposes in professional settings, from facilitating team discussions to enhancing leadership development.

What Are Card Decks?

Card decks in an organizational context are collections of cards, each containing prompts, questions, exercises, or scenarios that guide users through specific topics or challenges. These decks can be tailored to various themes, such as leadership, team building, problem-solving, or strategic planning. The cards are typically designed to be used interactively, encouraging participants to think critically, share insights, and collaborate with others. Whether used in workshops, coaching sessions, or meetings, card decks offer a structured yet flexible framework for learning and development.

Why Are Card Decks Important in Today’s Talent Landscape?

1. Engaging and Interactive Learning

In an era where attention spans are shrinking and traditional training methods are often met with disengagement, card decks provide a refreshing alternative. Their tactile, hands-on nature makes them inherently engaging, encouraging active participation rather than passive consumption of information. By involving employees in the process, card decks help to make learning experiences more memorable and impactful. This interactive approach is particularly effective in today’s workplace, where employees are seeking more dynamic and personalized ways to grow and develop their skills.

2. Encouraging Diverse Perspectives

One of the greatest strengths of card decks is their ability to bring out diverse perspectives within a team. By prompting discussions on various topics, card decks can help surface different viewpoints, ideas, and solutions that might otherwise go unheard. This is especially valuable in today’s diverse and inclusive workplaces, where leveraging different perspectives is key to driving innovation and problem-solving. The randomized nature of card decks can also introduce elements of surprise and creativity, sparking new ways of thinking and approaching challenges.

3. Supporting Flexible and Remote Work

As organizations increasingly embrace remote and hybrid work models, tools that support flexibility and adaptability are more important than ever. Card decks are well-suited to this environment because they can be easily used in both in-person and virtual settings. Whether facilitating a remote team-building exercise or guiding a virtual leadership workshop, card decks provide a consistent and adaptable tool that can bridge the gap between physical and digital interactions.

Conclusion

In today’s talent landscape, where engagement, diversity, and flexibility are paramount, card decks offer a unique and powerful solution. By fostering interactive learning, encouraging diverse perspectives, and supporting flexible work models, card decks are becoming an essential tool for organizations looking to develop their talent and stay ahead in a rapidly changing world.

If you are curious about what card decks could look like, check out our latest releases – the ACTIVATE Deck for Coaching Superpowers and the 90-Day Guide for Success -  Deck 1.

Teams365 #3872: Why Card Decks Are Essential Tools for Talent Development

8/19/2024

Picture
In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing work environment, organizations are increasingly seeking innovative methods to foster talent development. Among these methods, card decks have emerged as powerful tools that offer a unique, interactive approach to enhancing employee skills, fostering leadership, and driving team collaboration.

1. Structured yet Flexible Learning

Card decks provide a structured framework that is flexible enough to adapt to various learning contexts. Each card typically contains a prompt, question, or scenario that encourages critical thinking and reflection. This format allows participants to engage with the material in a way that is both guided and open-ended, making it suitable for a range of talent development activities, from leadership coaching to team-building exercises. The tactile nature of card decks also adds an element of interactivity that can make learning more engaging and memorable.

2. Facilitating Self-Reflection and Personal Growth

One of the key aspects of talent development is fostering self-awareness and personal growth. Card decks are particularly effective in this area because they encourage individuals to pause and reflect on their experiences, strengths, and areas for improvement. For example, a leadership development card deck might include prompts that ask leaders to consider their decision-making styles or how they handle conflict. This self-reflective process is crucial for personal development, as it helps individuals identify areas where they can grow and set actionable goals for improvement.

3. Enhancing Collaboration and Communication

Card decks are also valuable tools for enhancing collaboration and communication within teams. By using card decks in group settings, teams can engage in meaningful discussions, share diverse perspectives, and work together to solve problems. The prompts provided by the cards can serve as conversation starters, helping to break down barriers and encourage open dialogue. This collaborative approach not only strengthens team dynamics but also helps to develop key soft skills such as empathy, active listening, and conflict resolution, which are essential for effective teamwork.

Conclusion

In conclusion, card decks are essential tools for talent development because they provide a structured yet flexible approach to learning, facilitate self-reflection and personal growth, and enhance collaboration and communication within teams. As organizations continue to navigate the complexities of today’s work environment, integrating card decks into talent development programs can help to create more engaged, skilled, and adaptable employees, ultimately driving organizational success.

Teams365 #3870: Weekly Journaling Prompt: Success for Me This Fall Looks and Feels Like

8/17/2024

Picture
As we transition into the fall season, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what success means to you and how you can achieve it in the coming months. This week’s journaling prompt invites you to visualize and define your personal and professional success for the fall.

Journaling Prompt: Success for me this fall looks and feels like...

Visualizing Success

Start by imagining what a successful fall season looks like for you. Consider different areas of your life—career, personal growth, relationships, health, and hobbies. Write down specific goals you want to achieve in each area. For instance, in your career, success might look like completing a major project or gaining a new skill. In your personal life, it could be deepening relationships or starting a new hobby.

Feeling Success

Next, focus on how success feels. Is it a sense of accomplishment, peace, excitement, or fulfillment? Describe the emotions associated with achieving your goals. Understanding how you want to feel can guide your actions and help you stay motivated.

Quote for Inspiration

Reflect on this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

> "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."

Emerson's words remind us that the potential for success lies within ourselves, in our strengths, and in our resilience. Let this quote inspire you to look inward and recognize the resources you already have to achieve your fall goals.

Setting Intentions

With a clear vision of what success looks and feels like, set specific intentions for the fall. Write down actionable steps you will take to reach your goals. This could include daily habits, new routines, or seeking support from others.

Overcoming Obstacles

Identify potential challenges that might arise and think of strategies to overcome them. This proactive approach can help you stay on track even when faced with difficulties.

Reflecting on Progress

As the season progresses, use your journal to reflect on your progress. Celebrate small victories and reassess your goals if needed. Continuous reflection helps you stay aligned with your vision of success.

By journaling about what success looks and feels like this fall, you can create a roadmap for achieving your goals and experiencing a fulfilling and productive season. Use this prompt to tap into your inner potential and set yourself up for success.

Teams365 #3869: Friday Flashback – Re-introducing the 90-Day Guide for Success

8/16/2024

Picture
This month the NEW Deck 1 of the 90-Day Guide for Success Card Deck launched. It’s almost been 3 years since the book of the same name came out…redefining conversations between leaders and their team members. The 90-Day Guide for Success book explores 90 core areas for workplace success in the evolving workplace. You can find it on Amazon.
To make it even more accessible to those starting a new job, I have now launched a CARD DECK based on the book. To make it bite-sized you can follow 30 days  of prompts at a time. Deck 1 covering Days 1 – 30 was just released this month. Deck 2, covering days 31 – 60 will release next month and Deck 3 covering Days 61 – 90 will be released in October.
Card decks are a great gift for new leaders and employees. While I’ve chosen DECKIBLE which is an app to deliver card decks individually, organizations can also order printed copies in BULK directly from me.
The 90-Day Guide for Success Card Deck can be an important tool given that :
Card decks are an important reinforcement
Card decks can be used as a conversation sparker
The 90-Day Guide card deck can be a supplement to someone using the book, especially on the deckible app where you can follow each day or do a quick draw to have a random topic fix up.
Haven’t heard about the 90-Day Guide For Success book?
Here’s what I shared about the 90-Day Guide for Success book 3 years ago when it launched –
I’m very excited to announce book #2 in the Reconnecting Workspaces series. My vision with this body of work is that there will be a series of a dozen books in the series, over the next several years. The pandemic has made it apparent that remote work, and the need for connecting workplaces everywhere, is multi-layered. With that in mind, I am very pleased to announce the release of the 90-Day Guide. Here’s what it’s all about, according to the back-cover:

While 3 Billion people went digital overnight, few know how to work and thrive in the evolving workspace. While many felt they had the tools to work in an office, what’s needed in today’s virtual, remote and hybrid space?

What if you had tools and practices to help you thrive? What if you had a coach in your corner every day?

The 90 Day Guide to Success provides you with one 15-minute focus a day you can engage with, gaining clarity around what’s possible.

From delegation, to teamwork practices, getting organized, to navigating key relationships, work styles and conflict, this resource will be a go-to companion and touchpoint as you navigate your remote and hybrid work adventures.
This is an essential survival guide for the ongoing evolution of today’s virtual, remote and hybrid workspace. It’s delivered in daily bite-sized pieces to support you with the Daily Steps + Consistent Action which will create the Momentum you need.
*****

Here’s what Pegotty Cooper indicated about it:
“I was so drawn in by the range of potential development that Jennifer Britton structures in such an easy-to-implement way.  From laying the foundation with so many provocative questions to ask yourself about the beliefs and habits that make up your work – work that has been dramatically impacted by globalization and technology; to the challenge of integrating all of that into our basic human needs of trust and connection.  And from that bigger picture to the nitty-gritty of how I do it, whether it is getting to know others in our virtual world to how do I measure what’s actually  getting done or having those difficult conversations to restore that trust between us. I can’t wait to see for myself how the next 90 days go!!!”

Pegotty Cooper, President, Specialty Coach Training Inc, and co-founder of the CDC Certified Divorce Coach Program

Pegotty has spent many years training coaches around the world  to support individuals and families  through the most difficult times in their lives to have a voice and retain their dignity in the process.

I hope that you will enjoy the book and join us for the daily 730 am ET calls. Whether you join us on Zoom, YouTube or ClubHouse, it’s always about “daily focus + consistent action” to create momentum for you!

This week, we’re going to be exploring more of Chapter 7 of Reconnecting Workspaces, and you can follow along with some of these upcoming posts:

Enjoy your conversation!

Teams365 #3868: 20 Topics to Include in Your Onboarding Program for New Leaders

8/15/2024

Picture
Over the last 20 years I’ve led numerous trainings, and developed multiple curricula for organizations large and small for their new leaders. Whether the work started in a competency mapping process, or emerged from focus groups, I’ve always been amazed at how consistent the needs are for new leaders in organizations. It’s what has led me to keep on writing, including my latest series, the Reconnecting Workspaces series.
Most recent in this series is the launch of the new CARD DECKS, which bring to life the 2nd book of the Reconnecting Workspaces series, the 90Day Guide for Success. You can check it out on Amazon  here or better yet, check out the new 90-Day Guide for Success deck. Deck 1 just released and provides 30 days of prompts  in the WHAT? So What? And a QUOTE around key areas for workplace success today. You can find the deck on Deckible.

Teams365 #3866: Onboarding Success Factors: Part 1 of 2

8/13/2024

Picture
Effective onboarding is a critical component of a new employee's success and long-term retention. A well-structured onboarding process can significantly impact an employee's performance, engagement, and satisfaction. In this two-part series, we will explore key factors that contribute to successful onboarding. In Part 1, we will focus on preparation and initial integration.

1. Pre-Boarding Preparation

The onboarding process begins even before the new hire's first day. Pre-boarding involves all the steps taken to ensure a smooth transition. This includes:

- Welcome Package: Sending a welcome package with company swag, a personalized welcome letter, and essential documents can make new hires feel valued and excited.
- IT Setup: Ensure that all necessary technology and equipment are ready. This includes setting up email accounts, providing login credentials, and configuring workstations.
- Paperwork: Streamline the paperwork process by sending digital forms in advance. This allows new hires to complete necessary documentation before their start date, reducing administrative burden on their first day.

2. Structured Orientation Program

A structured orientation program is essential for introducing new hires to the company’s culture, values, and policies. Key components include:

- Company Overview: Provide an overview of the company’s history, mission, vision, and values. This helps new employees understand the organization’s purpose and culture.
- Department Introductions: Arrange meetings with key department heads to give new hires a broad understanding of the company’s functions and how different teams collaborate.
- Training Sessions: Schedule initial training sessions to cover essential topics such as compliance, safety protocols, and the use of internal systems and tools.

3. Clear Role Definition

Clarity in role expectations is crucial for new employees to feel confident and capable in their positions. This involves:

- Detailed Job Description: Provide a comprehensive job description that outlines key responsibilities, performance metrics, and reporting structures.
- **Goal Setting**: Work with new hires to set short-term and long-term goals. This helps align their efforts with the company’s objectives and gives them a clear direction.

4. Mentor or Buddy System

Pairing new hires with a mentor or buddy can significantly ease the transition process. A mentor provides guidance, answers questions, and offers support, helping new employees acclimate more quickly.

- Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-ins between the new hire and their mentor to address any concerns and provide ongoing support.

By focusing on pre-boarding preparation, a structured orientation program, clear role definition, and a mentor system, companies can set the stage for successful onboarding. In Part 2 of this series, we will delve into continuous support and feedback mechanisms to ensure ongoing success and retention.

teams365 #3865: 5 Essential Elements for Onboarding in a New Role

8/12/2024

Picture
Starting a new role is an exciting yet challenging transition. A comprehensive onboarding process can make all the difference, setting the stage for success and long-term satisfaction.  As a leader, and coach, I’ve been involved in supporting the onboarding process for many decades. The difference between a great onboarding process, and one that misses the mark, can cost anywhere from an estimated 30-40% of an employee’s annual salary, upward to 150% in the case of an executive.

Is it time to consider what you are dong in your onboarding process? It’s

Here are five essential elements to consider for an effective onboarding experience.

1. Structured Orientation

A structured orientation is the cornerstone of successful onboarding. It should cover the company’s history, mission, vision, and values, providing new hires with a clear understanding of the organizational culture. This orientation should also include an overview of the company's products, services, and key clients. Providing a well-organized schedule with dedicated time for learning about each department can help new employees understand how their role fits into the larger picture.

2. Clear Role Expectations

Clarity in role expectations is crucial. New hires need a detailed job description, including specific responsibilities and performance metrics. Early discussions with managers about short-term and long-term goals can align expectations and provide a roadmap for success. Regular check-ins during the first few months can address any uncertainties and help new employees adjust to their roles more effectively.
Lack of clarity around role is a major source of conflict. What needs to be clarified? Is it time to bring this to the entire team as well?

3. Access to Resources and Tools
Ensuring new employees have access to the necessary resources and tools is vital for their productivity. This includes setting up their workspace, providing necessary software, and granting access to relevant databases and networks. Additionally, offering training on these tools can prevent frustration and downtime, enabling new hires to contribute meaningfully from the outset.

4. Social Integration
Building relationships within the team and the broader organization fosters a sense of belonging and support. Facilitating introductions, organizing team lunches, or assigning a mentor or buddy can help new employees feel welcomed and valued. Encouraging participation in social events or team-building activities can further enhance their integration and engagement.
Will the new employee have a team member who can be their “onboarding buddy” or will they have access to a mentor who can help them navigate the unseen elements of the organization. My business partner and I are celebrating 10 years of program deliveries under the Mentor Roadmap™ banner – check it out and set up a call to learn more (https://calendly.com/jennbritton/15-minute-exploration-call(

5.Continuous Feedback and Support
Providing continuous feedback and support is essential for ongoing development and satisfaction. Regular performance reviews, constructive feedback, and open lines of communication can help new hires navigate challenges and celebrate achievements. Offering opportunities for professional development, such as training programs or workshops, can also contribute to their growth and retention.
As a leader how often are you holding coaching conversations with your team members?

Effective onboarding is an investment in your organization's future success. By focusing on these five elements—structured orientation, clear role expectations, access to resources, social integration, and continuous feedback—you can ensure that new employees feel supported, motivated, and prepared to thrive in their new roles.

I’m so committed to supporting others in the onboarding process that I have dedicated one of my books to better onboarding in the evolving workspace – check out the 90-Day Guide for Success on Amazon, or the new 90-Day Guide for Success card deck (Days 1-30) on Deckible.
