#Teams365 #445 - 6 #Leadership Questions a day - L is for Loyalty, Leadership, Lean

We are at L in the 6 #Leadership Questions a day. L stands for Listening, Lean, Loyalty, Learning. Loops, and Layers

Listening - When was the last time you were really listened to? When weren't you? A common concern we hear about today is that many people do not feel listened to. Consider you recent interactions this week with team members. Were you paying 100% attention or were you thinking about your reply or even some other issue. I have written quite a bit on listening in the context of coaching as a leader, including #Teams365 #192: Listening and Coaching as a Leader which you can read here.
If you are looking for more resources on this topic here's a great article from Skills You Need - "Listening Skills - The 10 Principles" which you can access here.
Questions to consider: On a scale of 1-10 (with 1 being low, and 10 being high) what do notice about your listening skills. What are you listening for?

Loyalty - While the perception of the "Employment Contract" may have shifted for many workers in the last decade, there are still many workplaces today where employees are fiercely loyal to their employers and organizations they work for. Consider small start-ups, companies like Zappos, Google, and some of the Top 100 Companies in Canada.
Question to consider: Where does your loyalty reside? Your team's?

Layers - Perspectives - In the executive and team coaching work I do, we spend a lot of time looking at, unpacking, and reframing perspectives around issues individuals and teams are facing. Strategic thought and action is grounded in exploring different layers, and perspectives, whether we are using the SWOT or a Strategic Issues Map.
Question to consider: Consider the biggest, and most important, issue you are struggling with right now. What are the different layers to the issue? The Different perspectives?

Learning and Loops - A foundational premise of the work I do with organizations and individuals is that they are open to learning, all the time. When we close ourselves off , and do the same thing all the time, we may find ourselves in the rut of "one path" whether it works or not. Many learning approaches are grounded in single and double loop learning. There is a great article by Management Help which describes the Single-loop, Double-loop and Triple-loop learning pathways. You can access it here.
Questions to consider: How open are you to learning? What are the new areas you are engaging with? Consider the team. How would you characterize their openness to learning and new ideas? Where do you see double and triple loop learning experiences?

Lean - As someone who has been involved in performance improvement for the last decade and a half, it's encouraging to see so many organizations from industries such as health care and IT, embrace approaches such as LEAN and Agile.  Approaches which put tools in the hands of leaders and others to promote speed, quality and flexibility are key in today's tumultuous environment.
Questions to consider: Where could you benefit from more tools in your toolbox to support enhanced performance?

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

This week’s check it off tip is a reminder of something most of us have heard since we were kids. Practice makes perfect. As we age when wed have to learn new things we sometimes forget that learning does not occur overnight. Many things take practice, feedback, adjustment, action, feedback, adjustment and action.

What are the new things you are learning about right now? Where could more practice benefit you?

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #443: Team Building Tip: What's Become a Time Sucker for you?

3/19/2015

Picture
Today's team building tip brings us back to some of our previous discussions around time management and also processes which might not be as effective as they could be. Meetings, admin tasks etc.

Today consider as a team what has become a "time sucker" for you. These may be tasks that have become less effective, or really are not necessary for all team members to complete. What is it that you need to let go of, or modify significantly?

I would guess, meetings might show up on at least 50% of reader's lists. Looking to boost meeting and team efficiency? Contact us to discuss how we could support you in this.

Have a great Thursday,
Jennifer

#TEams365 #442 : 6 #Leadership Questions: K is for Kindness, Knowledge, Known

3/18/2015

Picture
We are at K in the 6 Leadership Questions a Day. K stands for Kindness, Knowledge, Known and Kinesthetic, Keen and Knowledgeable.

Knowledge and Knowledgeable: As leaders it is important that we develop knowledge in areas that are outside of our original technical knowledge domain. Knowledge in areas such as Emotional Intelligence, Relationship Management, Team Management are just as important as we move up the leadership ladder." In fact, these are the core areas the Teams365 Foundations modules explore. You can learn more about  the Teams365 Foundations program here, which is offered as a public offering as well as internally for organizations.
Questions to consider: Beyond your technical knowledge, what other knowledge will help you excel?
On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being low, and 10 high, where would you rate yourself in the knowledge areas of Emotional Intelligence, Relationship Management, Team Leadership, etch?
You were to put attention around building knowledge in one area this quarter, what would it be?
What areas are you knowledgeable in? What can you do to share your knowledge more fully within the team or organization?

Kindness -
Many organizational environments strive to be more kind, inclusive and human-centric. Every day in small ways we can practice kindness. Whether it is making a practice of saying thanks, being sensitive to others, or going the extra mile, kindness builds trust and helps people feel connected, an essential element for engagement.
Questions to consider: What does kindness mean in your context? What can you do today to demonstrate kindness?

Known - What we are known for is our reputation. What are you known for? Internally? Externally?

Keen -
Keen is another word for interest. What are the areas you are keen in learning? Developing?

Kinesthetic - We learn many things kinaesthetically. It's not just through learning, but action shapes our knowledge base.
Questions to consider: What can you to do to create more kinesthetic learning opportunities for your team members?
Approaches such as job shadowing are ideal in getting newer team members with hands-on learning opportunities. Who could benefit from a more kinesthetic approach to development?

Have a great Wednesday,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #441: 6 Leadership Questions a day - J is for Just-In-time, Jazzed

3/17/2015

Today we are at J in the 6 Leadership Questions a day series. J stands for Jazzed, Joy, Justification, Judgement, Just in Time, and Just.

Being connected and excited about our work is critical to success. It is the heart of engagement. What do you get jazzed about? What does your team get jazzed about? What could you do to foster more of that sentiment?

Justification, and building a business case, is a skill set for many team leaders today. What are the business cases you need to build? What's the justification behind your requests. The clearer and more articulate we can be in our budge and personnel requests, the stronger our business case becomes. not sure to start with this area? This may be a good place to look at with a mentor.

Judgement - Where are you making judgements? How accurate are they?

Joy - What is your team getting joy around?

Just-in-time - Just in time approaches are important in today's ever changing environment. Where could you be providing more just-in-time feedback, learning and coaching?

Just - Being just and equitable is key for team members. How are you ensuring you are just in your

#Teams365 #440 - 6 #Leadership Questions a Day: I is for

3/16/2015

Picture
We are at I in the 6 Leadership Questions a day. I stands for Interdependence, Incentives, Introspeciation, Informal, Influence, and intuition

High performing teams recognize and leverage their interdependence, Teams who are too similar may be missing some key ingredients required for success.  Question to consider: What does interdependence mean for you? How are you interdependent as a team?

Different team members will find incentives in different things.  What would team members individually and collectively consider as incentives. How do they work for motivation?

Pause points and period of introspection allow us to slow down the pace and move out of execution and implementation into planning and strategic thought. consider how much introspection you have been able to do since the start of the year. How has that amount worked for you? What moments of introspection do you want to create for yourself.

The skill of influence is key for team leaders. As someone leading from the middle a key role is to communicate team issues upwards to your boss (es) as well as downwards. What are your strengths in the area of influence? What do you need to influence?

A lot of things occur informally in an organization. Informal learning through peer conversations, job shadowing and often coaching. Informal performance management and feedback sessions should occur regularly rather than just once  a year. What activities are key in informal learning for your team? Where is there opportunity to replicate other informal learning opportunities?

Intuition comes from the gut. Increasingly leaders are being exposed to frameworks and model which move them out of the head into the realm of leading from gut and head. You may be interested in learning more about the framework of Leading from the Head, Heart and Gut. Question to consider: What does leading from the head, heart and gut look like for you? Where could you be leading more from intuition?

Have a great start to your week,
Jennifer

#Teams 365 #438: 6 #Leadership Questions a Day - H is for Habits,

3/14/2015

Picture
We are at H today in the 6 #Leadership Questions a day series. H stands for habits, hopes, high performance, honesty, humility and helpful

Habits
are those patterns of behaviors we undertake usually without much thought.
What are the habits of your team right now? Which ones are supportive? Which ones are not?
In past posts, I have written about Charles Duhigg's excellent read, The Power of Habit, as well as dedicating other posts (which you can read here) on habits.

Hopes - our hopes or aspirations can be powerful beacons in pulling us forward, through the peaks and valleys of business uncertainty. Hopes are closely linked with our vision. What are your hopes? Five years from now, what do you want or hope to be doing?

High performance has been a key theme here at the blog. Helping teams accelerate their results with more easy flow is a key focus of all the work I do. As we have seen in past posts, high performance is based on six factors. Read posts related to this here. Question to consider: How does the team stack up around these factors of high performance?

Honesty - Honesty is key in building trust, the bedrock of any teams' success. Question to consider: Where is honesty showing up? Where is  it not?

Humility - Great leaders lead with humility. What does humility mean for you? Who are good role models of humility?

Helpful - Finally helpful rounds out our h words today. What does helpful mean in the context of your team? Whose back do you have? Who could benefit from a little more help today?

Have a great weekend,
Jennifer

#Teams365 #436: Team Building Tip: Creating a Shared Vision

3/12/2015

Picture
Picture
One of the six factors of high performing team is having  a shared vision. How clear is the vision for the team. Is it shared? We can create this as a team in several ways, including having the team create a story board of their vision. You can see a picture below of a one team's story which I worked with a few years ago.  Another approach is to have team members individually, and collectively, draw their vision for the team - a year from now, 3 years from now etc. Depending on the levels of trust, it is really interesting to see how aligned individual and team visions are.

What's your vision for your team?

Click here for other posts I have written on vision.

Have a great Thursday,
Jennifer
